Cynopsis: DIGITAL
02/02/12

Good morning. It’s Thursday, February 2, 2012, and this is your first early morning digital briefing. If you would like to read this or any other Cynopsis editions online, click here.

It has finally happened: Facebook has officially filed for its initial public offering and will look to raise $5 billion. No valuation number was given in its S-1 filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission. The filing also listed some official stats for the social network. Facebook has 845 million users and 483 million daily users. Its revenue for 2011 stands at $3.71 billion, up from $1.97 billion in 2010 (that’s an increase of 88%). In addition, Facebook’s operating income in 2011 was $1.76 billion, jumping up from $1.03 billion in 2010. The social networking company’s net income in 2011 was $1 billion; in 2010, it was $606 million. In a letter written by CEO Mark Zuckerberg that was included in the filing, he said, “Facebook aspires to build services that give people the power to share and help them once again transform many of our core institutions and industries.” The $5 billion that the company seeks to raise will be directed toward building technology and infrastructure to get everyone in the world connected, wrote Zuckerberg.

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

Disney Interactive and Yahoo! have launched Daily Shot with Ali Wentworth, a new original web series of three- to five-minute episodes each, on which the host will share her opinions on news and current events. The daily show is designed for busy parents and aligns with other initiatives from Yahoo! that are geared toward the female audience. It is also fits into Disney Interactive’s strategy to provide content for connected families. The partnership between Disney Interactive and Yahoo! will involve Disney show producers working with Yahoo! programming and editorial teams on a daily basis in order to determine which topics the show should cover. The Daily Shot will be available on Yahoo! Screen, as well as via Yahoo! News, Yahoo! Shine and Wentworth’s personal blog on Babble.com.

More news out of AllThingsD’s D: Dive into Media conference, this time from YouTube: Salar Kamangar, SVP of YouTube and video at Google, said, “We want for YouTube to become the platform for the new video channel ecosystem developing on the web.” To that end, YouTube wants to be a destination where users can set-up “niche channels” on topics in which they have interest. YouTube will then deliver relevant content to that channel. “We think this is going to increase minutes watched and user engagement,” he said. On the topic of Google TV, he mentioned that Google is “seeing a lot of interest from broadcasters to build apps, and someday those apps will be available over Google TV.”

Publisher77, the producers behind award-winning independent web series GOLD and Night of the Zombie King, have announced the cast for their project, Alice & the Monster. The new web series, a romantic dramedy about a young woman diagnosed with cancer, will star Shannon Nelson from Drop Dead Gorgeous in the lead role. Supporting players include David H. Lawrence XVII (Heroes), Abigail Marlowe (Community) and Anthony Geary (General Hospital). The series begins principal photography in mid-February, and is tentatively targeted for release in late 2012.

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

Hulus “Evil Plot to Destroy the World” ad campaign plays up the narrative that Hulu is a secret weapon used by aliens, disguised as prominent personalities like Alec Baldwin, Seth MacFarlane and Denis Leary, to destroy the brains of television viewers. The campaign was unveiled in 2009 via a TV spot starring Baldwin, which ran during that year’s Super Bowl. In a new ad for this year’s big game, the campaign will shine a spotlight on Hulu Plus as the newest innovation designed to turn human brains into “mushymush.” The sneak peek of the ad, which will star Will Arnett, can be viewed here.

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

Apple might be on the lookout for TV parts. AllThingsD reports that in a statement distributed to clients from Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster, he wrote, “In January we spoke with a major TV component supplier who has been contacted by Apple regarding various capabilities of their television display components.” According to Munster, this represents another piece of evidence that Apple is considering building a television. He also cites news from January 2011, in which Apple was said to have had meetings with manufacturers in Asia, which led Piper Jaffray to believe Apple was investing in manufacturing facilities for the production of LCD screens ranging from 3.5-inch mobile displays to 50-inch television displays.

Triveni Digital has announced that CTV, a private broadcaster in Canada, has deployed Triveni Digital solutions across all of its stations for metadata generation and management, as well as for multilayer monitoring and analysis of DTV streams. The network is using Triveni’s GuideBuilder metadata platform at its facilities in Calgary and Toronto to provide nationwide central-casting of Program and System Information Protocol (PSIP) data. Triveni’s StreamScope RM-40 remote DTV transport stream monitors have been deployed for CTV stations across the country. “Implemented as part of our transition to digital, the GuideBuilder systems are simplifying generation and delivery of accurate PSIP data to CTV stations across Canada,” said Yul Lem, senior director of transmission engineering at CTV. “The StreamScope RM-40 systems have enabled us to… accelerate the isolation and repair of transport stream issues.”

The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) is opposed to a waiver request that would allow MSOs to sell older set-top boxes with integrated security directly to consumers, according to Light Reading Cable. The request, which was filed by Adams Cable Equipment (ACE), a distributor of cable parts and refurbished set-top boxes, was sent to the FCC, which has banned the use of integrated security boxes since July 2007. ACE’s request mirrors one that was granted by the FCC in 2010 to Baja Broadband, which allowed for the small operator to sell set-top boxes with integrated security as it could not monetarily support set-tops with CableCARDs. The CEA opposes the waiver as it feels that ACE isn’t in the same financial troubles as Baja was. Light Reading Cable reports that, if the ACE waiver is approved, it could be used by any MSO wanting to sell cheaper set-tops.

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC. ~

Which Super Bowl team is winning the online competition? That’s the question Nielsen and NM Incite look to answer with their latest report on the online activity surrounding the big game. And according to them, it’s a draw (go figure): the New England Patriots have received more visitors to the team’s website, while the New York Giants are generating more buzz on social media. During the run up to the playoffs in December 2011, the Patriots received 644,000 unique visitors to their official website; the Giants: 574,000. However, Giants fans seem to be more engaged as they viewed nearly twice as many pages when visiting their team’s site than Patriots fans. On social media channels, including blogs, message boards and forums, Twitter, Facebook and comments on online news posts, the Giants control a 59% share of buzz throughout the playoffs. However, Tom Brady captured nearly double the amount of buzz when compared to his QB counterpart, Eli Manning.

This past Monday night’s fourth season premiere of Ru Paul’s Drag Race on Logo witnessed extensive chatter and activity on social media channels. The premiere landed eight U.S. trending topics on Twitter, including the names of several cast members on the show. In addition, the show’s Facebook page has received 89% more “likes” versus season 3 and currently has over half-a-million fans. The combined social media activity has led the premiere to a seventh-place ranking on Trendrr.

The number of digital coupon events increased by 12.3% in 2011 over the previous year, across key websites tracked by Kantar Media. In addition, the number of CPG manufacturers that distributed digital coupons across the same websites increased to 324 in 2011, which is a 2.5% increase over 2010. 108 of these manufacturers were only active in digital couponing; as in they did not complement the digital coupon campaign with a Free-Standing Insert (FSI) campaign. According to Kantar, it highlights the importance of monitoring competitive promotional activities across all forms of media. With a third of manufacturers opting only for digital couponing, these brands can influence shopping behavior when consumers are still planning their shopping lists.

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

About.com has launched a new free app for the iPhone and iPod Touch. Real Recipes extends About.com’s extensive catalogue of food and recipe content to the mobile platform, and presents it in a searchable, easy-to-use display. The app offers over 25,000 recipes and complements them with recipe ratings, reviews and tips from the website’s network of food experts. Users can search for content by ingredients, preparation method, cuisine, occasion or diet. In addition, the “Learn to Cook” section provides instructional content about cooking techniques, ingredients and more. And, as usual, the app allows users to share recipes and other content via e-mail, Facebook and/or Twitter.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Kazuo Hirai, who currently serves as the executive deputy president at Sony, will become the company’s new President and CEO, effective April 1. He will succeed Howard Stringer, who will remain Sony’s executive chairman until June 1, after which he will assume the role of Chairman of the Board when current board chairman Yotaro Kobayashi retires. In a statement, Hirai said the company will focus on driving growth for its core businesses: digital imaging, smart mobile and games, and to turn around Sony’s television business.

Hollywood.com has hired Michelle Lee to be its new Senior Vice President of Content and Editorial Director. At her new position with the entertainment website, Lee will be charged with managing the editorial staff, as well as designing and implementing Hollywood.com’s content strategy leading up to and through the release of a redesigned website later this year. Most recently, Lee was the editor-in-chief at InTouch Weekly. She will be based out of Hollywood.com’s headquarters in New York City.

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

I will be using this space over the next two days to focus on the most important thing (not named the Puppy Bowl) happening this weekend: Super Bowl XLVI between the New England Patriots and America’s Team, the New York Giants. With all of those facts in mind, here is the Super Bowl XLIV Commemorative app from NFL Magazine. Available for a discounted price of $2.99 on the iPad and Android tablets, the app offers season recaps for each team, video highlights, stats and bonus content such as all-star teams, all-time teams and the history of the Super Bowl. Once the big game has ended, the app will offer video highlights from the game, paired with player interviews, official pictures, animated plays, stadium shots and more. The NFL says the pre-game discount is over 50% less than the regular price. Go Giants!
