Good morning. It’s Thursday, February 24, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.
Nickelodeon will premiere its new original TV movie Best Player on Saturday, March 21, at 8-10p. Starring Jerry Trainor and Jennette McCurdy, both stars of the network’s series iCarly, the movie revolves around two online video gamers whose virtual and real world lives become intertwined. Directed by Damon Santostefano from a script by Rich Amberg, Best Player is produced by Pacific Bay Entertainment. The TV movie is executive produced by Lauren Levine, Marjorie Cohn and Jessica Rhoades. Sandy Climan and Christine Foy also serve as executive producers. Noted movie/TV/video game digital effects company, Zoic Studios, produced the CG animation and visual effects for the MMOG Black Hole, which is featured in the movie. Nickelodeon’s multi-platform promotional efforts for Best Player include:
- A sneak peek and clips from the movie on Nick.com and via its wireless partners.
- Following the premiere, Best Player will be available for purchase on iTunes, Amazon.com, Xbox and Sony Playstation.
- A Best Player site at nick.com/player will offer trailers, promos and exclusive footage, including behind the scenes footage, video diaries from the set, photo galleries, quizzes etc, with new content added regularly up to the movie’s debut.
- Beginning Saturday, March 5, Nick.com will feature a new game based on the fictional video game, Black Hole, from the movie.
Hong Kong-based Imagi International (movies: TMNT, Astro Boy) acquires Toon Express Group (Pleasant Goat and Big Big Wolf), a brand manager/owner of trademarks and characters in China, for around US$130 million. Toon Express has deals in place with Creative Power Entertaining (CPE) and Disney Enterprises. The CPE agreement includes development, production and distribution of audio visual programs, as well as publication, content development and licensing, and stage shows and mobile carnivals. Launched in 2005, Pleasant Goat and Big Big Wolf is hugely popular with K4-14 and can currently be seen in 75+ national, provincial and municipal satellite and cable TV networks in China. The series has also been distributed to other territories in the Asia Pacific region via TV, movies, publications, including on Disney Channels. Upon completion of the acquisition, Imagi will appoint Mr. Soh Szu Wei, CEO/Toon Express Group as an Executive Director and CEO of the company.
PBS Kids will celebrate the 107th birthday of Theodor Seuss Geisel (aka Dr. Seuss), with a two-hour programming marathon of the preschool series The Cat In The Hat Knows A Lot About That! on March 2, 2011 (check local listings). The marathon will feature two all new episodes of the series. Fans can also watch the popular episode, The Tree Doctor, online at www.PBSKids.org/video .
Selena Gomez & The Scene will debut Who Says, the first single off their Hollywood Records album, March 10 on the On Air with Ryan Seacrest show on 102.7 KISS FM. The following day Disney Channel will premiere the video for Who Says, which is directed by Chris Applebaum (Rihanna, Britney Spears, Mariah Carey). The digital single will be available March 14, and the new album releases June 28. Selena Gomez stars in Disney Channel’s Wizards of Waverly Place, and on the big screen starred in Ramona & Beezus and Fox’s upcoming Monte Carlo.
In keeping with its overall refreshed branding initiative, Astral Media’s Family Channel (Canada) launches its re-vamped website at family.ca ( www.family.ca ). The new design features enhanced minisites, a new widescreen video player (to reflect the network’s new HD launch), new activities and games, and other content, all of which reflects the recent on-air Family Channel brand refresh. Additionally, Family.ca features modifications of existing areas of the site to help with site navigation and the overall site experience. The Do It section has been renamed Hang Out, and will feature new activities over the next few months. Also getting an upgrade is the Say It comment boxes on some of the site’s pages, which let’s kids express their thoughts.
MARKETING/LICENSING
American Greetings Properties (AGP) and Japanese licensing agent MindWorks Entertainment ink a direct-to-retail apparel deal with retailer Uniqlo, under which they will expand the Care Bears product line. The agreement will make women’s and kid’s classic Care Bears t-shirts available at 800+ stores in Japan, as well as 150 stores worldwide.
Auryn, Inc., a digital publisher of kid’s storybook apps, partners with artist Lisbeth Zwerger to release The Little Mermaid by Hans Christian Andersen and featuring illustrations by Zwerger on the iPad tomorrow (promotional price $.99). Zwerger has created illustrations for a wide range of books including The Wizard of Oz, Alice in Wonderland, A Christmas Carol, and many others. The Little Mermaid is the first of Zwerger’s books to be released for the iPad.
EXECUTIVE MOVES
Camilla Carpenter is upped to SVP/Strategy and Networks Operations, Discovery Channel, from VP. She will report to Edward Sabin, Group COO, Discovery and TLC Networks. In her new and expanded role, Carpenter will support Sabin in building annual and long-term strategic plans, identifying business issues, analyzing deal strategies, serving as a liaison with Commerce and Licensing divisions, and managing all aspects of third party partnerships including output deals and the BBC. She will continue to be point for all business issues connected to Discovery Networks International.
The premiere week of Disney Channel‘s Disney Junior programming block (f/k/a Playhouse Disney), which launched February 14, 2011, provided the network its best ratings ever in the daypart with K2-5 (474,000), an increase of +34% over year-ago averages.
