Cynopsis: Kids!
02/16/12
Good morning. It’s Thursday, February 16, 2012, and this your first early morning briefing.
Germany’s ZDF Enterprises appoints US-based SMC Entertainment Group (SMC) to spearhead all licensing, merchandising and promotional activities for two of its popular teen series, H20 Just Add Water and Dance Academy, throughout North America for five years. SMC will be speaking to manufacturers and licensees to establish partnerships and develop products based on both brands to debut in the US market for spring 2013. Specifically for Dance Academy, SMC is looking for partners to develop products/promotions targeted to tween/teen girls in categories such as dancewear, apparel, accessories, publishing, gaming, back-to-school, health and beauty aids, room decor, among others. SMC will initially build H20 Just Add Water’s licensing and merchandising program to include swimwear, apparel, accessories, publishing, gaming/apps, stationery, room decor, novelties and health and beauty aids, with further expansion into other categories in the second tier. H20 Just Add Water already airs on TeenNick in the US, and Dance Academy will launch on the channel later this month.
LICENSING
New licensing deals in Spain for V&S Entertainment‘s animated preschool series Everything’s Rosie. The series debuted last year in Spain on RTVE’s Clan TV, which has picked up a second season of program. New partner publisher Panini will release Everything’s Rosie products including Stick & Stack Puzzle and Stick & Stack Colour Activity books, a diary and a musical activity book all featuring characters from the series, in spring 2012. Based on its success with the initial Everything’s Rosie products, master toy distributor Giochi Preziosi Spain is looking to expand its Everything’s Rosie activity with a line of stickers for the Spanish market. Other Spanish licensing partners include Random House Mondadori, DIVISA RED, IMC, Safta, Stor, Astro and CYP Imports. V&S is currently in advanced negotiations with other Spanish licensees, so stay tuned.
Caroline Mickler Limited, licensing agent for Moomin, grants a license to Rock Off for the design and distribution of a line of t-shirts for tween and teen girls and young adult women in the UK. The first shirt in the collection is available now in HMV stores, with a wider launch of the full collection of ten designs set to debut later this year. The shirts, which will be available at high street and department stores, will feature popular Moomin characters including Moomintroll, Moominmamma, Moominpappa, Snorkmaiden, Snufkin and Little My.
Nickelodeon will debut the new Nick News with Linda Ellerbee half-hour special, My Big Fat Failure, on Sunday, February 26 at 9p. The star-studded special includes the likes of Brian Williams, Tina Fey, and billionaire Richard Branson, Wendy Williams, Russell Simmons, George Lopez, Julie Bowen, and Rick Riordan, and YouTube creator Chad Hurley, among others, speaking about their failures and how they persevered. The episode also features kids talking about the fear of failure, what it’s like to fail and what to do, or wish they’d done, when they failed.
Astral’s Disney XD (Canada) will premiere the live-action comedy Lab Rats on Monday, March 12 at 3p. Viewers can catch a sneak peek of Lab Rats on Disney XD on February 24 at 7:30p, followed by the network premiere of the feature film Meet the Robinsons at 8p. Episodes of Lab Rats will also be available on Disney XD OnDemand from February 28. The series follows 14-year-old Leo and his newfound “siblings,” three super-human teens that secretly live in the high tech home Leo and his family just moved into, as they learn to navigate a average high school with not-so-typical bionic glitches. Lab Rats will air regularly on Saturdays at 6p, beginning Saturday, March 17. Lab Rats is a production of It’s A Laugh Productions. The series was by Chris Peterson and Bryan Moore (That ’70s Show) who, with Mark Brazill (That ’70s Show, 3rd Rock from the Sun) serve as executive producers. Lab Rats also debuts this month on Disney XD in the US.
