Good morning. It’s Thursday, December 9, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Disney Channel picks up the new animated series, Gravity Falls, and orders a second season of the animated Fish Hooks, both produced by Disney Television Animation.  Scheduled to launch in spring 2012, Gravity Falls follows twins, Dipper and Mabel Pines, as they reluctantly go to spend the summer with their great uncle in Gravity Falls, Oregon, where he runs a tourist trap called The Mystery Shack, and where there is something odd going on.  The series is created and executive produced by Alex Hirsh (writer/storyboard artist The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack, creative consultant Fish Hooks).  Fish Hooks, which revolves around three tween fish making their way through high school, premiered on Disney Channel in September 2010. The series is created and executive produced by Noah Z. Jones (a former freelance illustrator and author of kid’s books Always in Trouble and Not Norman: A Goldfish Story), working with executive producer Maxwell Toms (The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy) and directors Carl Greenblatt and Bill Reiss (Chowder).

In other news, Disney-ABC Television Group inks a new licensing deal with Netflix that will see hundreds of episodes and a selection of movies from Disney Channel, ABC and ABC Family available via streaming video to Netflix members.  For new shows included under the deal, the episodes will not be available until 15-days after the episode makes its initial telecast.  Disney Channel shows that will be available as part of the deal include Phineas and Ferb and Good Luck Charlie, both new to Netflix, and updated/expanded offerings of The Suite Life on Deck and Wizards of Waverly Place, as well as episodes of shows no longer in production such as Hannah Montana and The Suite Life of Zack & Cody.  TV movies will include High School Musical, High School Musical 2, Camp Rock, Avalon High, and Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam.

MORE KIDS STUFF

A Squared Entertainment (A2) and AOL launch the new educational, short-form animated web series (26 webisodes) and website Gisele & the Green Team, starring supermodel Gisele Bundchen ( www.giseleandthegreenteam.com ), on AOLKids ( www.aolkids.com ).  The Gisele & the Green Team series and website are designed to empower young girls to help save the environment.  Co-produced by A2 Entertainment and Xing Xing, a Beijing, China based digital animation studio, the animated web series revolves around a group of teen girls that are both supermodels and environmental superheroes who also promote diversity, self-confidence and sisterhood.  The website underlines the values of the series and will also include a “Girl Power” section, which features inner and outer beauty tips and activities that aim to get girls to follow their dreams, as well as a Go Green section, created by A2 with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), which will offer daily tops, facts and news about environmental action and awareness.  Bundchen is a goodwill ambassador for UNEP, and has also been actively involved in protecting the Brazilian Atlantic Forest and Amazon Rainforest water sources, as well as launching Projeto Agua Limpa (Clean Water Project) in her hometown of Horizontina in Brazil.

Disney shifts the release date for its new The Muppets Movie to Wednesday, November 23, 2011, Thanksgiving weekend.  The studio had originally planned to release the movie on Christmas Day, December 25, 2011.

TeenNick will premier the second annual TeenNick HALO Awards ( www.teennick.com/halo ) tomorrow, Friday, December 10, at 8-9p, which will followed immediately by an encore presentation on Nick at Nite at 9p.  Created, hosted and executive produced by Nick Cannon, the hour-long HALO Awards  (Helping And Leading Others) special will feature a range of stars, including Mariah Carey, Ashton Kutcher, Rosario Dawson and Wyclef Jean, celebrating four real teens who are out in their communities offering their assistance in one way or another.  TeenNick has partnered with the non-profit Entertainment Industry Foundation to provide grants and scholarships to each of the honorees.

Beyond Distribution is looking to build its UK programming content catalog.  The company is meeting with UK creator/producers of drama, factual, factual entertainment and kids’ content to bolster its slate.  Recent British acquisitions for the company include Open Mind Productions’ preschool series Numberjacks, for Cbeebies.  Additionally, at MipJunior Beyond introduced two new Cbeebies series, Iconicles from Create Media Ventures, which is being animated by Dinamo Products in Wales, and Dot To Dot Productions’ Get Squiggling!  Most recently Beyond signed Tati’s Hotel from Cardiff’s Machine Productions, a CITV commission.  Beyond is best known as an indie producer of content in Australia and New Zealand, while it’s production arm produces programming for the US and Canada.

Lionsgate and HIT Entertainment will release Aardman Animation‘s Shaun the Sheep: Spring Shenanigans on DVD this January 25, 2011.  The DVD title features seven full-length episodes of Shaun the Sheep, including two starring Timmy, with bonus content featuring a Sheep-Shearing Game, an episode of the animated TV series Timmy Time, and Timmy’s Tune #2.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Brooke Shields serves as the narrator for Juno’s Musical ABCs, a new ebook app from digital publisher of music education products The Juno Company.  Juno’s Musical ABCs takes kids on an interactive journey through the alphabet featuring rhymes, images and the Juno characters, and offering three different reading modes (Read It To Me, Read It Myself, and Autoplay).  The new ebook app is available for iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad, and currently free to download for a limited time. The Juno Company is the creator of the Juno Baby and Juno Jr. lines of products.

Debuting this week is the new Cyberchase Math Match app for iPhone and iPod Touch.  Developed by Cyberchase, the animated math series for K8-11 on PBS Kids GO!, and Lima Sky (Doodle Jump), the math-centric app features Cyberchase characters and tests kids math skills with a game where players must match up math problems with their solutions, becoming increasing difficult as they progress through the game.  The app also tracks high scores and best times.

Classic Media inks a licensing deal in the UK with Spearmark International, makers of child safe lighting and housewares, to create a line of products based on Where’s Wally? (known in the US as Where’s Waldo?, and other names around the world).  Slated to launch at retail in fall/winter 2011, Spearmark’s new Where’s Wally lunchware line will feature a new lunch bag, metal bottle and plastic bottle. Where’s Wally will celebrate its 25th anniversary in 2012.

Classic Media and RadioShack partner to offer DVDs of the holiday TV specials Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and Frosty the Snowman at 4,600 RadioShack stores over the holidays.  The effort will be supported in-store with counter displays.

Webkinz World ( www.webkinz.com ) rolls out the first phase in the refurbishing of its virtual world, which includes a map of Kinzville.  Designed to make navigate and discover Webkinz World, the map allows users to make their way to landmarks, where they can explore and perform tasks.  Both new and existing Webkinz members can do the tasks and win prizes, with new members having to accomplish a task before visiting the places, and current members doing the tasks to win prizes and a status increase.

DCD Publishing enters into a licensing deal with Wesco, part of the Zeon group of companies, for its Puppy Love property.  Under the deal Wesco’s Puppy Love line will include a new puppy alarm clock that will invite consumers to wake up to the sound of Donny Osmond‘s hit song Puppy Love.  The line will also feature Puppy Love purses, bags and watches.  Products are slated to be available at retail in 2011.
