The TiVo is coming back to DirecTV six years after the satellite company stopped offering the box and service to its customers. DirecTV announced that it will launch a new TiVo-based HD DVR in 10 major markets today. Priced at $199 with a monthly subscription fee of $12 (a combination of the $7 charge for subscribing to a DirecTV DVR service and an additional $5 for TiVo specifically), the set-top box will use TiVo’s “classic” user interface and will be powered by a hardware platform supplied by Technicolor. Content from TiVo’s broadband partners such as Netflix and YouTube is as of yet unavailable. The DVR will be capable of storing up to 100 hours of HD or 400 hours of standard-definition programming. While the service will be available for all customers by early 2012, the 10 current major markets in which it will be initially launched include New York, LA, Chicago, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C.

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

Netflix has announced an update to its app for Xbox Live. In an effort to enhance the content exploration and discovery experience on the app, new available features include offering up to three times as many titles available on a single screen; displaying three related titles at the end of piece of content, similar to YouTube; a button to play the next episode of a TV show; and an interactive function at the bottom of the screen that offers similar titles, control settings for audio and subtitles and rating capability. The app also supports voice-and gesture-based command via Kinect. The company announced that the app is now available for Xbox Live customers in Brazil, Chile, Colombia and Mexico.

Kabam has chosen to launch The Godfather: Five Families social video game exclusively on Google+, bypassing Facebook. Google will receive a 45-day advanced release window, and in exchange will promote the game in various ways and will agree to take just 5% of revenues instead of the 30% cut that is customary for games published on Facebook.

Streamworks’ live online broadcast of Major League Gaming‘s Pro Circuit National Championship tournament from November 18-20 pulled in a viewing audience from over 175 countries who watched a total of 3.6 million hours of video with a peak of 241,000 viewers watching the stream at the same time. It has been the latest success story for Streamworks and MLG during the current season as the online streaming company has reached over 3.5 million unique stream viewers between June and November 2011. Over the 2011 season, more than 15 million hours of video have been viewed during Pro Circuit weekends.

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

VideoHub, a division of Tremor Video, will be the first online video advertising platform to integrate Nielsen Online Ratings Campaign gross rating points (GRP) data through VideoHub for Advertisers. The agreement will give advertisers a single metric for gross reach, or total number of people who have seen the ad, and effective reach, which is a data point that gauges the quality of the ad exposure and its performance across all screens. Available to every client running campaigns through VideoHub, the data will help advertisers see which demographics their ad campaigns are reaching. After that, they can use VideoHub’s platform to understand exactly how those demographics responded to their campaigns.

Vitrue has unveiled a new feature called Anywhere Apps, which allows Vitrue customers to implement the layout, design and rich media assets of a Facebook tab on any other site or platform on the web. The new service is powered by Vitrue’s Social Relationship Management platform and will enable to brand advertisers to deliver cohesive campaign experiences on multiple websites and platforms. Catalyst S+F has launched Good Media Buys, a weekly deals service for a subscriber list of 5,000 media buyers that curates and provides discounted rates on inventory from publishers below the standard rate card amount. “Think of us as a Gilt Groupe with flash sales for the media community,” says John Durham, Catalyst S+F’s CEO and managing partner.

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

Civolution has announced that Fortium, a content protection solutions provider for film, entertainment and broadcast companies, has integrated Civolution’s NexGuard watermarking technology into its PIN-Play protection solution for files and discs for Fortium’s studio customers. Civolution’s NexGuard  Pre-Release Screener is already used with Fortium’s Patronus anti-rip copy protection service for large-scale duplication of DVD screeners. Now it can also be used with the PIN-Play technology on an individual, per-copy basis. Fortium’s PIN-Play solution helps restrict access to content to authorized users only and also offers file protection during storage, transfer and viewing for digital formats.

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC. ~

Inside its new Mobile Shoppers report that takes a look at how consumers’ access to mobile data will shape how and where they make their purchase decisions, the Interactive Advertising Bureau has published its first list of the most mobile shopping savvy cities in the U.S. The top 5 mobile shopping savviest cities, in order, are Houston, New York, Atlanta, Los Angeles and Dallas/Fort Worth. Rankings were calculated by assessing the mobile shopping audience today along with the distribution of mobile shopping-adept users across major U.S. cities. The report defines “mobile shopping” as a user using his/her device to purchase a product or conduct research on a product that is then bought at a physical location.

The average completion rate for in-stream ads was 72% for online and 87% for mobile on Rhythm NewMedia’s network in the third quarter, according to data from the company, reported by Mobile Marketer. In-stream ads are the commercials a user sees when watching full episodes or video clips online. The numbers remain high regardless of product category. Rhythm also found that the completion rate for interactive pre-roll ads was 51% higher in premium media properties (27%) than the average (17.9%). And finally, the company also noted that context is important as its data showed that the average engagement rate for relevant ads in entertainment properties was 7.7%; in comparison, the average overall was 5.6%. Rhythm NewMedia delivers multiple ad formats across 50 media companies, including NBCUniversal, CBS, Sony and ABC.

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

Flipboard, the popular social magazine app for the iPad, is now available for the iPhone and iPod Touch. The free app has undergone some changes in order to better fit the smaller screen and type of use associated with the iPhone. For example, instead of the page flip gesture that comes with the iPad version, the iPhone version features a page flick gesture. Other changes include a Cover Stories feature that publishes social updates from your friends, such as shared articles, photos and tweets. It all serves to make the iPhone version of the social magazine an app that users can visit often to get quick updates, instead of spending a longer amount of time perusing content as they would with its iPad app.

Xbox Companion is a new app for Windows Phone 7 owners that essentially functions as a browsing and viewing remote for the Xbox 360 and Xbox Live. It also offers a new feature where users can set alerts to when friends are on and playing a game. The app itself is free, but requires an Xbox Live subscription.

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

Splitsider is arguably one of my all-time favorite places to visit online. According to the site itself, it is “a website about comedy and the people who create it.” Started and still run by Adam Frucci, a writer and performer at the UCB Theatre based out of New York, the site provides a robust look at the craft, history, business and, of course, news in comedy. Frucci and Splitsiders network of intelligent (and hilarious) contributors have published great pieces ranging from a look at the entire history of SNL’s Celebrity Jeopardy to stand-up comedians’ memorable forays into dealing with hecklers. The site has funny videos, tweets, reviews, interviews, TV show episode recaps and much, much more; all focused towards anything “that exists to make you laugh.” If you care about comedy as much as Splitsider does, it’s going to quickly become daily, and sometimes hourly, reading material.
