Verizon has announced that it will be adding 26 live programming channels to Xbox Live TV for FiOS customers at some point in December. The service will be available to Xbox Live Gold subscribers via a downloadable Verizon FiOS TV application. Channels to be offered include HBO, MTV, Comedy Central, CNN, Spike, TBS and more; however, it will also depend on the subscriber’s TV package. The offering will also include Kinect voice and gesture command support. The deal follows Microsoft’s strategy of shifting the Xbox from only a gaming console towards more of a multimedia home entertainment unit, which received a big jumpstart in October when the company announced numerous streaming content deals with various TV partners, including Bravo and HBO. Verizon, for its part, is offering a free 12-month subscription to the Xbox Live Gold service for customers who sign up for its FiOS phone, TV and internet bundle by January 21, 2011.


Nexstar Broadcasting has agreed to a new, multi-year retransmission consent agreement with Dish Network. The deal will grant the satellite provider rights to carry 55 television stations and related digital programming channels owned by Nexstar and Mission Broadcasting, Inc. Nexstar owns, operates, programs or provides services for 75 TV stations and related digital channels, reaching close to 13.5 million viewers. Stations include NBC, CBS, FOX, ABC, The CW and Telemundo affiliates.

Farmhouse Productions and Duopoly have announced the U.S. release of a new original comedy series, Papillon, for both Hulu and Hulu Plus. The show stars Kevin McDonald of the acclaimed Kids in the Hall comedy troupe and centers around an eccentric crew who operate a cheap airline in a small airport on the U.S.-Canada border. It is the first series to come out of the Canadian Independent Production Fund’s pilot program, which seeks to provide support for original online programming.

In other Hulu news, the season finale of Spy, a British comedy series, will also premiere on Hulu and Hulu Plus this Friday, December 2, for American audiences. The entire first season, which premiered on Hulu sites on October 28, will be available on both the free and paid versions of the video site for viewers who want to catch-up on the popular spy series about a bumbling computer programmer who tries to become a capable member of the MI5.

If a user reads about an interesting destination or venue on any of CBS Local Digital Media’s network of websites, they will now have the option to add that location to their Foursquare To-Do Lists. CBS Local Digital Media has teamed up with Foursquare to offer the social service’s “Save to Foursquare” button across its web domains. CBS Local Digital Media’s network of sites are the localized online arms of all owned and operated CBS Television and Radio stations; delivering hometown news, entertainment and relevant information.


Online ad revenues in the U.S. have hit the $7.88 billion mark for the third quarter of 2011, finds the latest Internet Advertising Revenue Report from the IAB and PwC U.S. It is a 22% increase over the same time period in 2010, making it the eight consecutive quarter of year-over-year growth. The numbers also represent a 2.7% increase over the record-setting second quarter of 2011.


Ensequence and Civolution have announced an automatic content recognition (ACR) product integration that will help programmers and content creators deliver TV content that is synced with interactive content on smartphones, tablets and other connected devices. Civolution’s VideoSync technology, which is a second screen platform that identifies what channel and piece of content is being watched, will be integrated with Ensequence’s iTV Manager, which allows for the creation and real-time synced delivery of interactive content. This new solution will be able to identify what viewers are watching on their connected devices and then enable programmers and publishers to build two-screen experiences for TV shows and commercials.


According to the latest numbers from the 2011 Beta Cable Subscriber Evaluation Study, Discovery Channel was the top favorite basic cable network in the last 30 days among adults viewing TV on a smartphone or tablet. 28% of consumers cited the channel as one of their top five favorite basic channels to watch. It was followed by A&E (23%), ESPN (23%), Comedy Central (22%) and ABC Family (21%) to round out the top five.

While online retail shopping increased by 17% on Cyber Monday from Black Friday this year, according to data from eXelate, it does not represent true significant growth as online retail shopping has been averaging a 14% increase from Fridays to Mondays in November 2011. The Weather Channel has launched a new desktop app for Windows. The design for the new application is based on the channel’s recently revamped iPad app and includes features such as weather-triggered imagery, interactive maps and radar, instant access to severe weather alerts, extended forecasts and videos, including news and featured content directly from the television channel.

Innovolt‘s intelligent electronics protection and management technology helps increase the reliability of consumer-facing electronics that may be vulnerable to failure and/or a shortened lifespan due to power-related problems. With that goal in mind, the company has announced a growing list of Fortune Global 500 clients with whom it is testing out its technology in order to encourage manufacturers to integrate its power-protection service. Companies such as Ricoh, Toshiba and Katun have already adopted the platform as the company tests it out in a wide range of markets, including cloud computing, consumer electronics, telecom and cable & satellite. has joined Flipboard and will be the first website to provide content for the social magazine. Updated frequently with 50 new articles per day, the content is culled from’s Twitter feed, homepage and six content categories: Health, Travel, Style, Parenting, Food and Home & Garden.


Chris Thomes will be the Vice President of Digital Media Studios for the ABC Television Network. He will be responsible for the general management of branded digital programming, as well as overseeing the creative development of content created by external producers, which includes webisodes, original series and special event live programming for Disney/ABC Television Group‘s portfolio of broadcast and cable networks. At his new post, Thomes will report to Albert Cheng, the executive vice president and chief product officer of digital media for Disney/ABC Television Group.

Yahoo! has hired noted film critic and author Thelma Adams as Contributing Editor. Coming over from spending a decade as chief film contributor for Us Weekly, she will lead Yahoo! Movies’ awards season coverage.

LiveRail, the maker of a real-time video ad technology platform for publishers, networks and agencies, has named Erwin Castellanos as its new Executive Vice President. As EVP, Castellanos will focus on all of LiveRail’s publisher-side sales and business development efforts. His team will help publishers and media companies use LiveRail’s RTB platform and private exchange technology to create greater revenue opportunities from the clients’ online video advertising.

Gannett has announced the appointment of Bill Cronin as the new Vice President of Marketing for USA Today. Cronin will oversee strategic marketing, events, special projects and project management for the department. He will be based in McLean, Virginia and will report to the senior vice president of marketing, Sandra Micek.

TourWrist is a mobile and web-based maker of virtual tours that lets users search for, shoot, upload and share experiences captured by 360-degree panoramic photos.
