Good morning. It’s Thursday, August 30, 2012, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
The TiVo Stream, a new transcoder device that lets users watch live TV, as well as download and watch recorded shows, on mobile devices, will be released on September 6, according to a product review from AllThingsD. Available for $130, users need to also have a TiVo Premiere box ($150 to $400 depending on the model) and subscription ($15/month) to use the Stream. Right now it’s only compatible with the iPhone, iPad, and new iPod Touch models, however an Android app is “in the works.” Overall, users will be able to connect up to four mobile devices to the Stream, which will initially be available for purchase on TiVo.com before being shipped to Best Buy “soon after that.”
Yahoo will be the first to premiere Suit Up, a new sports/comedy series produced by Fox Digital Studios (FDS), in association with DirecTV. The show follows a successful crisis manager, played by Marc Evan Jackson (Reno 911), who takes charge of an athletic department of a major university that is in the middle of a scandal. The eight-episode series will be available exclusively via Yahoo Screen for two weeks, beginning on September 12. All eight episodes will be available at launch. The show will also get a broadcast premiere. Starting in January 2013, the series will be available via DirecTV’s Audience Network. This is the fourth web show from FDS, which is a division of 20th Century Fox Filmed Entertainment.
Showtime has launched a new digital media campaign to promote the second season of its critically acclaimed series Homeland. Available at ItHitsHome.com, the campaign allows fans to bridge the gap between seasons one and two by participating in an original, interactive story that is delivered through video and audio files, documents, and other “interactive events.” Spoiler alert, the story begins with character Carrie Mathison on a hospital bed about to undergo electroconvulsive therapy. The user is then given a mission to uncover evidence in order to stop a new threat. The site features several portals, including Carrie’s Wall, an interactive version of the evidence wall assembled by Mathison throughout season one. The Wall serves as the entry point of a virtual scavenger hunt, through which users can search for clues. Other portals include Saul’s Files, which offer documents from the computer of another character, and Dana’s Blog, offering a look into another character’s history. Showtime says new portals will be unveiled every week. The second season of Homeland premieres on September 30.
The Huffington Post’s Shadow Conventions will bring on Michael Moore, Roseanne Bar, Pierre Omidyar, and Larry Lessig, among others, as special guests today. Today’s topic centers on the influence of money on politics.
Not only has the Paley Center for Media unveiled its full lineup for PaleyFest: Fall TV Preview Parties in LA, the group has also announced that it plans to live stream the panels throughout the event. The streams will be available exclusively on the Paley Center’s Livestream page. The event begins on September 5 and runs through September 11 at the Paley Center for Media in Beverly Hills. Here are the days and times for each broadcast network’s live streams:
- NBC: 7:30pm PDT on September 5
- CBS: 7:30pm PDT on September 6
- The CW: 5:45pm PDT on September 8
- FOX: 6:00pm PDT on September 10
- ABC, two sessions: 7:45pm PDT and 9:15pm PDT on September 11
Exponential Interactive’s mobile advertising solution, Appsnack, has been selected as a finalist in the mobile campaign management and analysis category by iMedia’s Next Wave Challenge. It is one of eight finalists in the category, which will be voted on by marketers. The nomination means Appsnack, which launched three months ago, has the chance to showcase its product suite at the iMedia Breakthrough Summit: Next Wave this coming October.
mPortal has released a new set of social TV APIs that are designed to help content and service providers build second-screen apps for connected devices. “The APIs allow providers to develop a completely interactive experience that connects audiences with friends in various social networks while, simultaneously, giving insight into individuals’ unique viewing preferences,” said mPortal Founder and CEO D.P. Venkatesh. Apps built using these APIs can also offer additional content tied to the show the user is watching, as well as allow said user to discover new content based on his or her friends’ favorite programs, what’s airing on TV at the moment, and/or suggestions from recommendations engines. The APIs are available as part of the company’s cloud-based Springboard Media platform, which allows clients to develop TV Everywhere apps spanning smartphones, tablets, connected TVs, and other devices.

During an invite-only meeting at the CEO and CMO Summit the Mobile Marketing Association (MMA) recently held in the Dominican Republic, the MMA unveiled MXS, a new research initiative that attempts to determine mobile’s role in the overall marketing mix. The study, which was conducted by cross-media research firm Marketing Evolution, analyzed a wide array of data and trends to conclude that on average mobile advertising should account for 7% of US marketer’s total spend. Currently, the actual average is less than 1%. The study also indicates that over the next four years, mobile’s share of the overall media mix is going to jump to at least 10%, based on increased smartphone adoption alone. In a statement, Greg Stuart, CEO, MMA Global, said, “The next step in this process will be to validate these findings with the recently announced MMA SMoX.me program where we will conduct cross media research with key leading marketers globally to provide additional critical ROI data for them and the industry.”
A new Google study on multiscreen consumer behavior finds that 77% of viewers watch television with another device in hand. Additionally, “in many cases people search on their devices, inspired by what they see on TV,” reports Google in a blog post about the study. Now compound this with other findings from the study, such as 80% of searches on smartphones are “spur-of-the-moment,” and 44% of those searches are goal-oriented, and you can see why Google says businesses should be present and optimized across multiple screens.
According to ABI Research, worldwide revenues for video delivery platforms, which include online video platforms (OVP), managed video platforms (MVP), content management systems (CMS), and content delivery networks (CDN), will hit $2.1 billion this year, and will roughly double to over $4 billion by 2017. The research firm designates Akamai as the top CDN as the company had about $475 million in revenue from media and entertainment companies in 2011. KIT Digital comes in as the leading CMS provider (nearly $175 in revenue from media and entertainment companies in 2011). Brightcove is the largest OVP ($64 million) and Synacor leads the MVP market.

YouTube has released a new app for the Xbox 360, which it says is now up to five times faster and includes “channels with official music videos.” It’s available via the Xbox Live Marketplace. However, for Gold subscribers, the app will update automatically.
GSN has launched The American Bible Challenge game, an extension of its original series, for iOS devices and on Facebook. Aside from trivia questions about the Bible, the free app also lets users watch episode recaps of The American Bible Challenge and access other content from the American Bible Society. A version for Android is coming soon.

ILoveDocs.com is a recently launched streaming site for documentary films. It allows fans to rent or purchase a movie and allows filmmakers to submit their films for inclusion in the site’s library of documentary programming. According to the site, a portion of the proceeds goes toward ILoveDocs.com’s foundation to support documentary filmmakers and projects. Most of the titles are available to everyone, with a select few restricted to certain territories and regions based on availability. So if you’re into documentaries, give this a look. There’s a “Weekly Picks” tab that offers a curated list of titles, put together by the site’s Managing Editor & Programmer, that you can check out.
