8/02/07

Good Morning, it’s Thursday, August 2, 2007 and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

Disney acquired Club Penguin, the K6-14 targeted virtual world with a reported 12+ million registered users and 700,000+ current paid subscribers across the US and Canada.  Disney paid $350 million to the three Canadian Dads who founded and launched Club Penguin in 2005, and who could potentially earn as much as another $350 million pay off, if the virtual world hits projected worldwide growth markers by the end of 2009.  Earlier this year Club Penguin had drawn interest from Sony and Viacom.  Now titled Disney’s Club Penguin, the site will retain its URL (http://www.clubpenguin.com) and its $5.95/month subscription fee and will remain based in British Columbia.  The founding Dads, Lane Merrifield, Dave Krysko and Lance Priebe, will be join Disney and will continue to serve as the senior management team of Club Penguin.  Merrifield, Club Penguin’s CEO, will become an EVP of The Walt Disney Internet Group, reporting to WDIG President Steve Wadsworth.  WDIG’s other kid/family aimed virtual worlds include Disney’s ToontownOnline and the upcoming Pirates of the Caribbean Online (late 2007) and Disney Fairies (2008).

The FCC approved a set of rules for the upcoming spectrum auction that adhered to Google’s “openness” principle, requires the winning bidder to make services rendered on the wireless airwaves accessible to any phone, device or application. The requirement applies to a total of 22 megahertz being sold to a commercial provider, which the government expects could raise $10 billion or more.

The FCC also called for the creation of a digital TV conversion task force to educate the public on how to prepare for the February 17, 2009 transition.
