Cynopsis: DIGITAL
08.15.13
Good morning. It’s Thursday, August 15, 2013, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
The word from Deadline.com is that DirecTV is about to add its third original series. Navy St., an hour-long drama set around a mix-martial arts guy in southern California, is to be created by Byron Belasco and Endemol Studios. The deal will be for 10 episodes. DirecTV’s other two original series are Rogue, which was recently renewed, and the yet-to-be-released Full Circle.
In Other Words: DirecTV doesn’t want Netflix to get all the original-content glory.
Apple has purchased video-recommendation site Matcha.tv, a site that allows people to bring together programming guides for a variety of different services, such as Hulu, Amazon, and Netflix. The price is thought to be somewhere between $1 million and $1.5 million.
In Other Words: Apple is doing everything it can to help consumers put content onto their screen of choice.
Oxygen Media is breaking new boundaries by working with Instagram to launch a new project on the image-sharing site, tentatively titled Oxygen’s Daily OxyGram. It will consist of a series of 15-second videos six days a week that contain never-before-seen content from such Oxygen offerings as Best Ink, Bad Girls Club, and The Face. “As storytellers, we want to give our fans the ability to enjoy [programming] any way they choose and on any platform,” Bunim/Murray Productions SVP of Digital Media Daniel Tibbets told Cynopsis exclusively. “A platform like Instagram is best experienced on your phone. The enjoyment of short-form, or in this case ultra-short-form, video content is the most relevant way to deliver these storylines to our viewers.” Bunim/Murray produces Best Ink and Bad Girls Club. Shine America produces The Face.
In Other Words: Watch more and more productions across broadcast and cable networks take this kind of tack. It wouldn’t long to shoot and it provides excellent engagement opportunities for a devoted audience.
“The future of CNN is as much about digital as it is about a television screen,” president of CNN Worldwide Jeff Zucker told reporters on Wednesday, and the news net is betting $15 million that he’s right. CNN has invested in its infrastructure to make it easier to place content and advertising in varied digital outlets, as people increasingly rely on mobile devices for news and updates. Included is a major overhaul of the CNN website, which will adjust to fit the screen of whatever device is being used; a new color scheme will use different shades to indicate what kind of news is being reported, with red reserved for breaking news. “In the long run we won’t care where people get news,” said Zucker, “as long as it’s from CNN.” The new site goes live in November.
Gays and lesbians may be able to legally marry in New York now but they still have to go through the difficulties of finding love. A new web series launching in the fall, Gays: The Series, will chronicle the adventures of four twentysomething gay men in New York who just happen to represent four different sectors of the gay experience. Info can be found at Facebook.com/GaysTheSeries.

In the world of set-top boxes, Roku is the most popular streaming player with consumers, according to new research from Parks Associates. In a survey of 10,000 U.S. broadband households with streaming-media devices, it was discovered that 37% used Roku while only 24% used Apple TV. Broadband houses that have streaming-media devices have doubled since 2011. The number of households with connected devices is expected to double by 2017 with a whopping 330 million sold annually.
In Other Words: Roku has a good jump on the field, but needs to stay focused on dominating to keep the marketing behemoth that is Apple at bay.
A new study from Juniper Research called Future App Stores: Discovery, Monetization & Ecosystem Analysis 2013-2018, says that more than $75 billion will be spent on consumer apps in 2017. Most of that cash will come from in-app purchases. By 2017, the revenue from apps brought in at the point of download will be around a quarter of the $75 billion. Juniper predicts that the amount of revenue spent by tablet owners will increase from $7.8 billion this year to $26.6 billion in 2017. The largest category of growth will be games, accounting for 32% of total revenue in 2017.
If your brand wants to do business in China, start thinking about mobile marketing. A new study from the Interactive Advertising Bureau and the Interactive Internet Advertising Committee of China reveals that China is “outpacing the U.S. in consumers who use smartphones as their sole or primary media device.” More than a quarter (28%, to be exact) of Chinese smartphone owners report watching their TVs less and 27% report lowering their consumption of print content as well if they own a connected mobile device. Additionally, the Chinese surveyed seem much more able to focus on one thing than their American counterparts. While watching TV, 51% of Americans surveyed said they should engage in some form of Internet communication while only 10% of Chinese respondents would; 38% of Americans would read social media while watching TV while only 9% of Chinese would; and 34% of Americans would conduct a local search while watching TV but only 8% of Chinese would do the same.
In Other Words: Attention spans in America are still short.
Two mobile-ad companies are joining forces. Millennial Media is purchasing competitor Jumptap, a deal that brings together two well-known mobile ad companies. Jumpstart shareholders will pick up 24.6 million shares from Millennial Media to seal the deal. That gives them about 22.5% (or around $210 million worth) of the company. The word from Millennial President and CEO Paul Palmieri during a call with investors is that Millennial’s focus is on brand advertising while Jumptap’s was more in performance advertising and real-time bidding.
Digital Brand Media & Marketing Group, Inc. and video messaging specialist VMS Holdings, Inc. have declared a partnership. The VMS mobile application allows companies and users to send and receive video content to and from a mobile phone, subscribe to a favorite TV-channel or sports team and get video updates, as well as serve as a tool for mobile marketing and sales.

In the wake of brisk sales of tweet-related sponsorship opportunities for MTV‘s 2013 Music Video Awards, Viacom and Twitter are partnering for Twitter Amplify campaigns for dozens of other shows and events through 2014. Twitter Amplify lets nets deliver sponsor-supported content via Twitter before and during events. “The availability of Twitter Amplify in the MTV Music Video Awards – an annual trending-topic behemoth – generated such a great response from advertisers that we’re accelerating our plans to roll it out across our networks,” said Viacom Music head of Sales, Music and Entertainment Jeff Lucas. VMA’s air live Sunday, August 25 at 9p; sponsor-supported content for the event will include red carpet and backstage moments, and MTV News reports.
In a column for LinkedIn, WPP founder and CEO Sir Martin Sorrell says his firm is putting more energy toward digital and expecting more revenue from that area as well: “We will accelerate the implementation of our strategy by raising our targets from 35-40% for both fast-growth markets and new media to at least 40-45% each over the next five years,” he wrote.
