IN THE NEWS |
| ABC has filed a formal response accusing the FCC of violating its First Amendment rights with its investigation into “The View” regarding political “equal time” rules. The FCC’s actions “threaten to upend decades of settled law and practice and chill critical protected speech, both with respect to ‘The View’ and more broadly,” says the filing, adding that “The View” was granted a news exemption more than 20 years ago.
NBC has ordered two new drama series and two new comedies for the 2026-2027 season. “Line of Fire,” following a family of law enforcement agents, stars Peter Krause, Kat Cunning, Tommy O’Brien, Taylor Bloom, and Charlie Barnett, with Josh Safran (“Gossip Girl”) as writer and an executive producer. The other drama on deck is a reboot of “The Rockford Files,” the 1974-80 detective series, starring David Boreanaz. Writer Mike Daniels is an executive producer, along with Carl Beverly and Sarah Timberman. Chris Leanza is a co-executive producer.
On the comedy side, NBC has picked up “Newlyweds,” a later-in-life love story about a free-spirited woman and a buttoned-up professor who marry impetuously after a whirlwind courtship. Real-life marrieds Tea Leoni and Tim Daly play the couple, with Jamie Lee Curtis recurring as guest star. Meanwhile, “Sunset P.I.” brings Jake Johnson to the screen in a comedy that NBC cheekily says “continues the proud tradition of Los Angeles private eyes that began with Philip Marlowe and will end with this show.”
ABC has unveiled its summer 2026 premiere schedule, headlined by a new spinoff series and a lineup of returning game shows. “Celebrity Family Feud” (Season 12) launches Thursday, July 9 at 8 p.m., followed immediately by the Season 7 premiere of “Press Your Luck.” Making its debut Monday, July 13 is “Dancing with the Stars: The Next Pro,” a new spinoff hosted by wildlife conservationist and Season 34 Mirrorball champion Robert Irwin. “The 2026 ESPYs Presented by Capital One” airs live Wednesday, July 15 on ABC and ESPN+, and Jimmy Kimmel returns to host Season 5 of “Who Wants To Be A Millionaire” on Wednesday, July 22 at 8 p.m.
ABC will also revive its summer Sunday night movie tradition, airing classics such as “The Sandlot,” “Independence Day,” “Speed” and “True Lies,” alongside Disney titles including “Moana,” “Toy Story 4” and “The Parent Trap.”
There are some “very large and enthusiastic partners” in the bidding process for licensing rights to AMC’s “The Walking Dead,” AMC Global Media CEO Kristen Dolan told analysts during the company’s earnings call last week. While AMC is considering “any variety of constructs,” Dolan said co-exclusivity would be key to any deal. Netflix is expected to continue offering the zombie drama until January 2027.
Warner Bros. Discovery announced during its quarterly analyst call that HBO Max is on track to hit 150 million subscribers before year’s end. CEO David Zaslav pointed to strengthening momentum in subscriber growth and related revenue, with even faster gains anticipated through the second quarter and beyond. The platform has seen notable growth in Europe, and a slate of anticipated new content, including an upcoming “Harry Potter” series, is expected to further accelerate that trajectory.
Freedom of the Press Foundation (FPF) and Reporters Without Borders filed a demand for records from Paramount Skydance. The groups are looking for details of Paramount’s dealings with the Trump administration, citing “credible concern” that Paramount leadership offered more favorable coverage of the Trump administration in exchange for favorable treatment by Trump administration regulators. Said Clayton Weimers, Executive Director, RSF North America, “Around the world, we have seen how political pressure and media concentration can hollow out independent journalism from within. The United States is not immune.”
