Cynopsis: Kids!
04/01/10

Good morning. It’s Thursday, April 1, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

BBC names kid’s TV veteran Kay Benbow as the new Controller of CBeebies.  Currently Head/CBeebies Production, Animation and Acquisitions, a role she has held since 2006, Benbow will make the move next year with BBC Children’s to BBC North in Salford.  Benbow takes over the vacancy left by Michael Carrington who exited the position earlier this year to join Turner Broadcasting as Chief Content Officer, Cartoon Network EMEA.  Benbow joined BBC Children’s in 1988, after beginning her career with BBC World and Domestic Services, and she also managed, produced and directed various series.  She spent two years at Tell Tale Productions, where she was a producer on Tweenies, before returning to BBC Children’s and has since developed and executive produced a range of programs.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Disney Channel begins production on its new original TV movie, Sharpay’s Fabulous Adventure, this summer.  Ashley Tisdale reprises her role as Sharpay Evans, which she made popular in the High School Musical TV and feature films, and she also serves as executive producer on the movie.  Written by Robert Horn (producer of the Broadway show 13, writer/producer Designing Women), the movie follows Sharpay (and her dog Boi) in the next humorous chapter of her life as she heads to New York and a role on Broadway … maybe.

Disney Channel India acquires the animated TV movie Feluda  The Kathmandu Caper (1×60), based on the popular Indian action/adventure detective series, Feluda, by the prolific and adored director/author (and a painter and composer) Satyajit Ray, from DQ Entertainment International (DQE).  The TV movie is produced entirely in India.  The Kathmandu Caper follows Feluda as he, and pals Jatayu, Topshe and Bones the dog, head to Kathmandu in Nepal to investigate a series of mysterious crop troubles there.  Feluda made his first appearance in a kid-targeted magazine in 1965.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Little Airplane Productions inks pre-sales for its short-form preschool animated series Small Potatoes (26×3) across Europe, Australia and Canada.  The new broadcast deals for the music-centric series include CBeebies (UK), NRK (Norway), SVT (Sweden), ABC TV (Australia) and TVO and Knowledge (Canada).  CBeebies plans to premiere Small Potatoes in summer 2011.  Designed to help preschoolers learn about different genres of music, Small Potatoes features works by composers and lyricists such as Jerry Bock (Fiddler on the Roof).

Zodiak Entertainment increases its 35% share in India’s Sol Production to a majority stake of 51%.  Additionally, Sol Production names Keshav Kaul as its new CEO.  Sol, which became part of Zodiak Entertainment Group in 2008, will maintain its independent status.  Sol’s programming includes the long-running teen-targeted drama Kya Mast Hai Life for Disney Channel India, as well as shows such as the celebrity matchmaking reality series Swayamvar.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Classic Media signs further license agreement for its new preschool property Tinga Tinga Tales.  New deals across all categories include: William Lamb (footwear); Roy Lowe & Sons (socks and hosiery); VMC Accessories (dress up and accessories); Trademark Collections (bags, umbrellas, wallets); Zap (bedding and towels); Hall & Associates (health and beauty); MV Sport (bikes, trikes, scooters); Paul Lamond (board games and puzzles); Titan (stand alone magazine; BBC Worldwide (multi-character CBeebies Weekly and CBeebies Animals Magazine).  Previous deals include pan-regional deals with Penguin Group, as global master publishing, which will release its first titles in the UK this May 2010, and a Bandai, the master toy partner for the brand, which will roll-out toys based on the property from this September.

Chapman Entertainment enters into a license deal with Studio Liddell to create Nintendo Wii games and iPhone apps for its Roary the Racing Car and Fifi and the Flowertots properties.  The two companies have worked together since 2004 to create CGI content for both TV series.  The Roary the Racing Car app, Rollin’ Road, releases this week and Wii games for both properties are slated to be available in 2011.  The contract between the two companies runs through June 2013. Studio Liddell is currently seeking publishing partners to help bring the titles to market.

Discovery Communications and Mike Rowe are teaming with Outdoor Cap Company to create a line of men’s/women’s headwear based on their co-brand Dirty Jobs/mikeroweWorks.  Designed for on-the-job (functional use), outdoor use, and casual wear, the new hat line launches this Father’s Day 2010 at Academy Sports + Outdoors.  Distribution will expand to other specialty stores, mass market retailers and mid-tier chain stores in fall 2010.  The line includes safari, beanie, and fleece hats, and baseball caps, as well as HiBeam caps with an LED light in the visor.  The deal was brokered for Discovery and mikeroweWorks by their North American licensing agent, The Joester Loria Group.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Feld Entertainment names Allison Lort as Sr. Director/Licensing Sales.  Based in NYC, Lort will oversee and grown brand licensing sales for Feld Motor Sports’ Monster Jam.  Most Recently, Lort was with Fisher-Price, serving as Sr. Marketing Associate on the Thomas & Friends line.  She previously toiled for 4Kids Entertainment’s marketing/licensing group.
