If Hello Kitty can do it… Hasbro Inc. is blinging out via a partnership with World Trade Jewelers to create and distribute jewelry designs themed around key icons from games including Candy Land, Scrabble and My Little Pony. Initial Scrabble designs will include pendants, bracelets and cufflinks featuring the Scrabble initial in solid sterling silver featuring diamonds, or as an actual wood scrabble tile framed with sterling silver or 14-karat gold. The Candy Land line includes themed jewelry such as cupcake lockets and diamond-encircled lollipops. Initial products will hit retail in the fall. “Hasbro’s branded properties are legendary and proving extremely popular within our jewelry creations,” said World Trade CEO Murray Shabot.


Nothing like a new Curious George special to entice kids to explore the great outdoors. PBS Kids has set Earth Day, April 22 as the premiere date for the one-hour Curious George Swings Into Spring on Earth Day, with repeat airings throughout the following weekend. The special has been available on DVD and as a digital download since March 12. A new Curious George online game is slated to launch in late April, featuring natural science concepts such as plant growth and butterfly metamorphosis.

Scholastic wins North American master publishing rights for Zodiak Kids’ preschool series Tickety Toc, which airs on Nick Jr. in the U.S. and Disney Junior in Canada. Scholastic will be debuting a variety of story and activity books, plus ebooks and novelties in spring 2014. The deal was brokered by U.S. licensing agent Established Brands and Canadian licensing agent, Studio Licensing. Tickety Toc consumer products from Just Play and Anchor Bay Entertainment will launch in North America in the fall.


Alloy Digital is growing up fast. The media company that owns a gaggle of youth content brands including mega-hit Smosh, the world’s most subscribed YouTube channel with 9 million subs and growing, is buying video distribution and content network Digital Broadcasting Group. The purchase corrals DBG’s weighty syndication network – its portfolio of in-stream partners spans 2,600 partners – and suite of pre-roll advertising units with Alloy’s substantial digital distribution network. Combined, the companies would reach 80 million unique visitors monthly and would strengthen Alloy’s verticals both in existing categories like entertainment, lifestyle and gaming, and new areas such as technology, sports and travel. The move follows close on the heels of ABS Capital Partners’ $30 million Series A investment in Alloy.


Sen. Jay Rockefeller (D-W.Va.) is continuing full-throttle in his quest to augment awareness of violence in the media. Rockefeller said he would add his bill on the study of media violence as an amendment to the bipartisan proposal to extend gun background checks currently being parsed in the Senate. Rockefeller’s Violent Content Research Amendment of 2013 mirrors the bill he reintroduced in January that directs the Federal Communications Commission, Department of Health and Human Services and other agencies to work with the National Academy of Sciences to assess whether a connection exists between exposure to violent video programming and detrimental effects on children. Meanwhile, the Senate today defeated the Public Safety and Second Amendment Rights Protection Act, which had a provision that would establish a commission to study the causes of mass violence in the United States, including the media.


Syfy Kids, the children’s block programmed by KidsCo and Platinum Films, is heading to Asia in July with a lineup of original and recently acquired content. Syfy Kids will air on KidsCo channels dubbed into local languages including Cantonese, Mandarin and Indonesian. Programming includes an exclusive first run of KidsCo original series Zuzu & the Supernuffs (Matchbox Pictures) plus acquisitions including Matt Hatter Chronicles, Z-Squad (Nelvana), Evolution: The Animated Series (Cookie Jar/DHX Media) and Dino Squad (Cookie Jar/DHX Media)… ABC TV Australia is picking up three key DHX Media children’s properties: Turner Broadcasting-commissioned Ha Ha Hairies, season one; Rastamouse, season two; and a renewal of hit CBeebies show Grandpa in my Pocket, season one. Australia’s national public broadcaster, has picked up the exclusive free-to-air rights to all three shows for broadcast later this year.


Pop princess Britney Spears is lending her voice to The Smurfs 2, the Columbia Pictures/Sony Pictures Animation sequel due out July 31. Spears has a new song, “Ooh La La” (RCA Records) that will play during the film’s end credits. Says Spears, “I have always loved the Smurfs as a kid and now my boys are the biggest Smurfs fans EVER. I wanted to surprise them with a song in the movie. I know they’ll think it’s Smurftastic!”


Fitness-focused series LazyTown is taking its message on the road by joining up with the American Heart Assn. to support its Heart Walks taking place around the country beginning this month. LazyTown fitness hero Sportacus will make appearances at up to 25 local walks, beginning April 20 in Tulsa, Okla. Broadcast in more than 170 countries worldwide, LazyTown is set for its third season premiere in U.S. on Sprout in May.

National Park Week kicks off April 20, and the National Park Service and the National Park Foundation are bursting with activities for families under the banner of this year’s theme, “Did you know…” (For starters, did you know there are 401 national parks in the United States??) The parks will offer free admission from April 20-26 with events ranging from bike tours to concerts to living history encampments. And here’s a little something especially for the kids. April 20 is Junior Ranger Day, but all year long children ages 5-12 are encouraged to take part in free Junior Ranger programs in almost every national park. Ask for a Junior Ranger booklet at the visitor center and earn a badge by completing different activities.
