Google will be rolling out an extensive redesign of Google+ in the coming days. The changes begin with a new interface for navigation, with a customizable “ribbon” of applications on the left side of the page replacing static icons that used to be at the top of the page. The redesign also brings bigger photos and videos into the fold, as well as an update to Hangouts that provides a regularly updated list of invitations to hangouts with friends, and access to every public and “On Air” hangout for connecting with new people or watching a live broadcast. The biggest aspect of the redesign may be the new “dynamic ribbon” feature, as GigaOM notes that Google refers to the tools that can be placed in the ribbon as “applications.” This could mean that Google is preparing an app platform by opening the social network up to third-party developers, according to GigaOM. “We’ve also built the ribbon with the future in mind, giving us an obvious (and clutter-free) space for The Next Big Feature, and The Feature After That,” wrote Vic Gundotra, SVP at Google.

To celebrate the first birthday of YouTube Live, the video site’s live-streaming platform, YouTube is rolling out some new features. The most prominent one is the ability for YouTube Live partners to now monetize their streaming content. “A live event can now be claimed in the new video manager like any other video and monetized with in-stream ads or paid options where you can set price by country,” writes YouTube in a blog post announcing the update. Other features include new publishing flows and real-time analytics, as well as a new free software that allows YouTube partners to produce and stream professional-looking live events directly to YouTube from their desktop.
Yahoo!’s recent announcement of its organizational restructure means one thing: a stronger focus on the customer, according to what CEO Scott Thompson wrote in his staff memo. “Our success is determined by how well we engage consumers and give them fun and informative experiences that they feel were designed just for them, on all screens,” he said. The media company will have five new units, one focused on “consumer business,” led by Ross Levinsohn; a “connections” group for Yahoo!’s search and social services; a “commerce” unit for Yahoo!’s shopping, travel, automotive, jobs and real estate sites; as well as two others focused on technology and sales.
EQAL’s launch of u look haute, a fashion and beauty network that is a part of the YouTube original programming initiative, generated close to 600K video views in the first week for its first 22 original videos, all together offering almost an hour of new programming. The channel currently has over 40K subscribers. “We’re excited to see more high-quality original programming like u look haute coming to YouTube to give (the fashion and beauty) audience even more reasons to keep spending more and more time on the site,” says Terry Hurlbutt, Strategic Partner Development Manager/Lifestyle, at YouTube. The content is produced entirely in-house through the newly formed EQAL Media Studios.
Social TV is proving to be an interesting conundrum for networks that pay large fees to get broadcast rights to major sporting events, according to Adweek. This is primarily due to the availability of companion-viewing apps from companies such as ESPN, Yahoo! and more. The report indicates this can be troublesome for networks such as NBC, the owner of exclusive rights to the Olympics, when the likes of ESPN launch mobile apps that viewers can have on hand while watching a live game. “We want to see ESPN as a second screen for all sports,” said Eric Johnson, EVP/Multimedia Sales at ESPN to Adweek. “We want to take co-viewing to the next level.”
BlackArrow has announced updates to its BlackArrow Advanced Advertising System that enable TV service providers to work with networks to expand the sale, placement and measurement of dynamic ad insertion across IP and traditional pay-TV platforms. The enhancements, which are a new Ad Router technology and a Business Suite of software tools, allow service providers to offer programmers an expanded menu of options to control and manage their ad inventory. The Ad Router resides at the operator’s data center and controls and mediates all real-time advanced advertising workflows, including ad routing requests that are based on various platforms and inventory owners. The Business Suite enables programmers to manage metadata and avails, or placement opportunities, against their content. These new products enable the use of third-party ad systems, or the BlackArrow Campaign Suite, for the fulfillment of multiplatform national ad campaigns.
In Europe, Vienna-based Liquid 7, the digital content division of Atlantic Group, recently launched Sunny 7, an online network aimed at adult women that integrates content from Meredith Corporation’s brands (such as Better Homes and Gardens and Family Circle) across digital and social media. This deal is part of Meredith’s expansion of its international reach across Europe, the Middle East and Asia.
Inergize Digital has signed Hubbard Broadcasting to its Inergize SMS Platform, which offers features such as alerts and interactive campaigns in order to engage consumers and generate mobile revenue for local media companies and their advertisers. “We have several clients generating more than $10,000 per month with SMS campaigns,” says Jason Gould, SVP & GM at Inergize Digital. Hubbard TV stations licensing Inergize SMS will include ABC affiliates in several Minneapolis cities, as well as an NBC affiliate in Rochester, NY.
Worldnow, a provider of online technology, content, video and revenue solutions for local media, has announced it has added support for closed captioning of live streaming content, and thus meets FCC’s requirements for IP-delivered video. The company says that FCC’s recent enactment of new closed captioning rules for IP-delivered video programming had already been in hand for its patent-pending video technology. Over the last 13 years, over 400 local media companies have employed Worldnow’s video technology.
Gartner forecasts worldwide media tablet sales to reach 118.9 million units in 2012, which would be a 98% increase from 2011 sales (60 million units). Apple’s iOS will remain the premier tablet operating system, as it’s projected to account for 61.4% of worldwide tablet sales. “Despite PC vendors and phone manufacturers wanting a piece of the pie and launching themselves into the media tablet market, so far, we have seen very limited success outside of Apple with its iPad,” said Carolina Milanesi, VP/Research at Gartner. Microsoft tablets are expected to account for 4.1% of 2012 sales, and grow to 11.8% of sales by the end of 2016 (Microsoft is set to release Windows 8 this year). Gartner believes Microsoft will have more sway within IT departments. “We see Windows 8 as a strong IT-supported offering more so than an OS with a strong consumer appeal,” said Milanesi. Gartner projects enterprise sales of media tablets to account for about 35% of total tablet sales in 2015.
The overall search market, as defined by Google, AOL, Bing and Yahoo!, saw a slight decline in query volume even though March had two more days than February, according to Kantar Media. Here are some other highlights from Kantar media’s March 2012 U.S. Search Market Share Report:
- Google-powered engines now represent 66.3% of the market, with Bing-powered accounting for 33.7%.
- Bing-powered engines (Bing and Yahoo!) picked up the 0.5 percentage points in share that Google-powered engines lost.
- Bing alone experiences a 0.4 percentage point increase in share, now representing 18.0% of the U.S. search market.
- AOL witnessed a slight decline (-0.1 percentage point), while Yahoo! saw a slight increase for the second month in a row.
BRB Internacional has launched new free iOS apps under the name BRBPLAY. The apps provide access to over 1,000 hours of content for kids and families, including titles such as Around the World with Willy Fog, Dogtanian and David The Gnome. The programs are available in both Spanish and English. The BRBPLAY app was created with ADNstream tech support, and will also be available for Android “this year.”
SMC Entertainment Group, an entertainment and brand management company, has named Heather Smith Noback as its new VP/Interactive & Digital Media. At her new position, Noback will be responsible for the development and execution of brand strategies, along with overseeing the licensing and merchandising of categories, including interactive gaming and all forms of digital media across all SMC brands. She will manage licensing partnerships with developers of gaming and digital distribution. And finally, Noback will aim to rebuild retail partnerships and promotions with online retailers and digital partners. Coinciding with the hire, SMC has formed a new division to manage online and social media strategies for the company and its brands. Noback, as well as the new division, will report to SMC’s SVP/Licensing, Lisa Streff.
Xfire, the creator of a social gaming app that allows users to connect with each other through the sharing of videos and pictures, as well as via a chat feature, has appointed Malcolm CasSelle to be its new Chief Executive Officer. In his new role, CasSelle will look to drive the company’s expansion into the Asian market. Xfire just formed a joint venture with China Youth Goyor Technology to bring its suite of services to the Chinese market of 400 million gamers. Xfire will support in-game chat for customers using Chinese characters. Xfire’s social gaming app has received over 21 million downloads, with six million gamers connecting to it every month.

In preparation for the upcoming London Olympics, Samsung has partnered with the U.S. Olympic Committee to launch the U.S. Olympic Genome Project, an interactive social media app “that gives Team USA fans the opportunity to find out just how Olympic they are.” With the project, fans can discover their connections to the athletes competing in the Games. “You may discover that you attended the same school as one of our gymnasts, or you have a close friend in common with one of our wrestlers,” says Lisa Baird, USOC Chief Marketing Officer. Once users have “liked” the page, they can share their connections with Facebook friends, take quizzes to raise their member status, access more info about the athletes and follow Team USA news. Other ways to raise member status include answering questions that build a stronger Genome profile or through the achievements of the athletes the users are connected to. The higher the status, the more tokens one can earn, which can be redeemed for prizes such as Samsung mobile products, as well as a chance to win trips to London. The social platform has also been designed to let Team USA athletes engage with fans, share information and raise funds.
