New Gartner research, as reported by MediaPost, forecasts that the iPad will take up almost 75% of tablet sales this year and over 50% through 2014. In fact, besides Apple’s iOS, no other tablet operating system will have more than 5% share of sales in 2011. Furthermore, overall tablet sales are on pace to hit 63.6 million units sold, a 261% increase from 17.6 million tablet units sold last year. The firm also predicts substantial growth in the total number of tablet units sold in 2015 – 326.3 million units to be exact.
Still can’t get enough of Angry Birds? Well you’re in luck. The game’s developer, Rovio, has announced that they will roll out a crowd version of the game for live events. In this version of the game, players control the slingshots on the big screens with their voices. The new version was test driven at a Formula One racetrack in Singapore this past weekend. If you’re already salivating, don’t fret; Rovio says it’s going to bring the game to the world’s biggest live events.
You can now share which articles you have read on Yahoo! News with your friends on Facebook right on the news site. The new service requires a Facebook account. Once you are logged in, on the top of the page you will see which of your friends are also using the service and which articles they have read and recommended.
Mobile DTV, a service that delivers free over-the-air programming to vehicles, will now be required to have a back channel that can send viewing information back to broadcasters, according to CE Outlook. The back channel can also be utilized to provide paid programming options.
Fans of the ACC can now stream live college football and basketball games via the college sports conference network’s ACC Sports app. Available for free download on the iPhone, iPad and Android devices, the app will broadcast live coverage of 13 ACC football games and 35 ACC basketball games.
For video game publishers, YouTube has become an incredible ally, according to a report in The Los Angeles Times‘ Business section. The video site has become a hub for not only releasing trailers and marketing promos, but also as a platform to engage gaming fans who upload their own videos of them playing games. For example, Electronic Arts, which has accumulated 470+ million views on YouTube in just the past year, encourages fans to upload “brag clips” showcasing their video gaming prowess.
DirecTV CEO Michael White said that the $29.99 price for premium films, films that are released 60 days after its theatrical release instead of the customary 90 or 120 days, is the reason the demand for such an offering is so low. [Via Bloomberg]
What does the new Facebook Timeline feature mean for marketers? Well, according to AdAge, since users will now be able to share what they’re listening, watching and reading through media partner apps, marketers can now distribute these brand mentions to a larger audience via sponsored stories. In fact, Sony Pictures has plans to promote its new film, Moneyball, when anyone watches its trailer on the site. Previously, they only did this when users would check-in or publish a status update regarding a specific brand.
Savtira Corporation‘s SaaS eCommerce platform, which includes the “Entertainment Distribution Network” that streams digital media from the cloud to any device, is getting a major uplift. NetApp and CDW will provide ten storage area network systems at the size of ten petabytes to be used by Savtira for increasing the bandwidth of its clients’ branded eStores. According to Savtira, to give you an idea of how large a petabyte is, one petabyte can store five years worth of data from NASA’s Earth Observing System.
Hit by patent infringement suits from Apple, Samsung is finally deciding to fight back. In an interview with the Associated Press, Lee Yuohghee, head of global marketing for mobile communications at Samsung said Apple was “free riding” on Samsung’s patented wireless technologies and Samsung will “be pursuing [its own] rights in a more aggressive way.”
For its August Mobile Mix Report, Millennial Media combined smartphone and other mobile devices to measure the total operating system impression share. Android came out on top with 54% share of OS impressions with Apple’s iOS coming in second at 28%. Other findings include:
- Android’s and Window’s impressions both grew 48% month-over-month.
- 32% of impressions came via Wi-Fi. Of these impressions, 59% were from smartphones as opposed to other connected mobile devices.
- Impressions from gaming apps increased 19% month-over-month, while impressions from music & entertainment apps grew 13%.
Women (68%) use social media to communicate way more frequently in the United States than men (54%), says a new Harris Interactive estimate. In fact, when given the option of choosing one method of communication with friends outside of face-to-face, 18% of women choose social media, while only 12% of men indicate the same. [Via MediaPost]
An IDC research study indicates that the Indian market witnessed 42.8 million shipments of mobile phones in Q2 of 2011. While this is a growth of 6% from Q2 of 2010, it is also a decline of 3% from the Q1 of 2011. However, the smartphone segment grew 68% year-over-year to grab a 5.6% share of the overall mobile phone market.
