Cynopsis: DIGITAL
09/19/11

Good morning, it’s Monday, September 19, 2011, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.  If you would like to read this or any other Cynopsis edition online, click here

In a round of executive shake-ups, board members Bijan Sabet and Fred Wilson and Chief Scientist Abdur Chowdhury are leaving Twitter. Sabet and Wilson were two of the company’s earliest investors and had helped guide the company’s direction. It is believed that Sabet and Wilson were part of the group of investors who sold some of their shares when Twitter recently closed another round of funding to the tune of $800 million. Both men will remain as investors and their now-vacant seats on the board will not be filled. Meanwhile Chowdhury, who had come to Twitter when the micro-blogging site had purchased the Summize search engine in 2008, was responsible for several big data projects at the company including Twitter Search and Recommendations.

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

Google might now have its sights set on Flipboard. In a news item reported by AllThingsD, the search and media giant is rumored to be working on a product called Propeller that will directly compete with magazine-style news reader apps like the aforementioned Flipboard, AOL’s Editions and (new CNN property) Zite. As a matter of fact, Google had actually tried to purchase Flipboard last year. However, when the well-funded company declined, Google said if it couldn’t buy Flipboard, it would create a competing product of its own.

“TV to Bing About” is an integrated marketing campaign between The CW Network, paralleling its “TV to Talk About” slogan, and Bing to promote The CW’s fall lineup across multiple Microsoft channels, CWTV.com and the network’s Facebook page. Videos will go behind-the-scenes with the cast and crew of the network’s popular TV shows. The companies are already grabbing questions from fans on social media channels to be incorporated into the content.

CBS and Foursquare have unveiled a branded page for the network’s critically-acclaimed reality competition series, The Amazing Race. When Foursquare users check-in, they will have access to numerous content including travel tips via videos from series host Phil Keoghan, series trivia and fun facts, along with exclusive content from the upcoming season of the show.

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

Longboard Media, an ad network that manages the ad inventory of many e-commerce sites including shop.com and overstock.com, raised $6 million in Series A funding. The startup, which was started by two former eBay employees, has claimed it served over 3 billion paid ad impressions during the 2010 holiday season and increased its publisher base by 40% in 2011, according to TechCrunch.

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

A Forrester Research study, commissioned by digital call advertising company Marchex, reveals that, even in today’s digital-focused environment, the digital call advertising market is still a demand for businesses, and the market opportunity for driving phone calls will eclipse $6 billion by 2014. This finding also indicates that driving phone calls could far outweigh the market opportunity for daily deal offerings, which a recent BIA/Kelsey study projected will be around $4.17 billion by 2015.

Mixpo, a video advertising technology company, launched its Mixpo SmartVideo platform. The platform will help publishers, ad networks and agencies create targeted, interactive video ads across multiple screens and ad formats in real-time, right before they are served. The interactive offerings include the ability for advertisers to insert store hours and directions, coupons, surveys, Twitter feeds, product in-formation, and sign-ups into the ads.

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

Google‘s response to the recent revelation of the AOL, Yahoo! and Microsoft ad inventory merger can be best described as: whatever. Google’s vice president of product Neal Mohan elaborated, “We think that we operate a very premium ad exchange. That’s what our advertisers and agencies tell us in terms of what’s available on our platform … I don’t know much about [the competition’s impending deal]. I wasn’t invited to the dinner.”

  ~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

According to a new survey by Credit Suisse, as reported by Multichannel, about 20% of American pay-TV subscribers may cancel their service in the next few years because they find them too expensive. In fact, 50% of the consumers who don’t currently subscribe to pay-TV attribute the reason to the high cost of multichannel video services. Furthermore, almost half of the 25% of consumers surveyed who say they subscribe or use a service like Netflix, Hulu Plus or Amazon Prime Instant Videos, use these services as a substitute for paid television.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Spotify, the current big trend in music-playing apps, has hired former AOL-exec Jeff Levick as its new Chief Advertising Officer. Based out of New York, Levick will help adapt the music service’s ad model to U.S. marketers and help build sales teams both in the U.S. and worldwide.

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

If you’ve been aching to bring your supreme gambling skills to the entertainment industry (in a legal way of course), let me introduce you to Media Predict. Essentially, you place bets on what will happen in the media industry. For example, you think you have a good idea on how many people will tune into Zooey Deschanel’s new show on FOX? Want to put your money where your mouth is? This site lets you do just that. For those of you who are interested, the website lets you participate in a fantasy game to test your mettle. And if you prove to be very adept at the game, the site will offer you an invitation to participate in Media Predict Real Money, where you’ll receive anywhere from $10 to $50 to start placing bets. TV, it can be just like sports. Well, kind of …
