Former Microsoft Office executive Stephen Elop was named the new CEO of Finnish handset maker Nokia, a company that still enjoys a 35% market share of the mobile phone market but that has struggled to compete in the smartphone space. (See the Gartner research brief below.) Mr. Elop’s resume include stints at Juniper Networks, Macromedia and Adobe Systems.
MTV’s online coverage of the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards (VMA) pulled out all the digital stops last night to increase engagement around the show:
- Interactive developer AttracTV, maker of a self-service video “vidget” platform, powered live streaming access from behind the scenes at the event, allowing fans to chat, share viral show moments, view nominated videos and receive real-time alerts on winners
- A partnership with Coincident TV dubbed “ Behind the Lens” allowed fans to interact with VMA winning videos of years past and top nominated videos for this year’s event. Coincident’s secondary layer of content provides Yahoo-sponsored facts, tidbits of information and contextually relevant links throughout the timeline of the video
- MTV also embraced digital media technology to deliver nominated videos to voting members of the VMAs for the first time. Yangaroo‘s secure Digital Media Distribution system allowed voting members to stream the videos online for review, and vote electronically
Livescribe, creator of the Echo and Pulse smartpens, has secured $39 million in Series C financing, led by Crosslink Capital with participation from Scale Venture Partners and various existing investors. Livescribe will use the funding to advance the company’s technology platform to enable more seamless integration with existing workflows and applications such as Google Docs and Facebook. The round brings the company’s total investment to approximately $100 million.
Microsoft introduced some enhancements to its Digital Marketing portfolio to better help companies drive online revenue generation around key components such as online video, adaptive websites and social media. Publishers such as the AP, Gannett, Tribune and Endemol are utilizing the software for multiple functions including digital content management, editorial collaboration, mobile journalism and business partner relationship management.
Entertainment media company Buzzmedia is running a campaign with Sprite that will distribute mobile codes under bottle caps fans can redeem to enjoy live music performances. The Fresh Sound Studio offering kicks off with a track from 16-year-old Jasmine V., recently featured in Justin Bieber’s “Baby” video.
Digital media tool provider Telestream completed its acquisition of video production and management firm Anystream from Grab Networks. Anystream’s Agility and Avalon lines of enterprise-class transcoding and media management platforms will be integrated into Telestream’s product offerings, as will its management team.
Online video management company KIT Digital is enhancing its multiplatform credentials, acquiring Southborogh, MA-based Accela Communications for an undisclosed amount. Accela’s AccelaCast platform supports delivery and measurement of interactive video to multiple devices including set-tops, mobile, tablets and IP-enabled televisions.
Can you hear my now? Much-maligned AT&T announced more than a dozen network upgrades across the U.S. to improve its cell coverage, including a $275 million upgrade in the Metro New York City region. The enhancements include adding more than 25 new cell sites throughout the state and nearly 700 new radio carriers in NY City.
TV Everywhere technology provider Envivio has developed a HTTP dynamic video streaming solution for the Adobe Flash platform, enabling content owners to deliver premium, subscription-based content to multiple platforms that support Adobe Flash or AIR.
Increased sales of phones based on Google’s open source Android platform will make the upstart OS the #2 mobile operating system by the end of the year and the #1 system overall by 2014, according to a new forecast from Gartner, Inc. The sheer volume of phones based on Nokia’s Symbian platform will keep it on top until then, but Symbian’s market share will continue to fall, from 46.9% in 2009 down to 30% in 2014. Single-source platforms, such as Apple’s iOS and Research In Motion’s OS, will increase in unit terms, but their growth rate will be below market average and not enough to sustain share increase, according to Gartner.

Facebook claimed the top spot for the first time in terms of time spent among major internet sites in August, according to ComScore. Of the 413 million minutes users spent online during the month, some 41.1 million or 10% of the time was devoted to the social networking site. Google sites came in second with 39.7 million aggregate minutes, followed by Yahoo sites with 37.7 million minutes.
Hallmark Channel is gearing up for today’s premiere of The Martha Stewart Show with a huge marketing campaign and a multi-layered Facebook app. The Mystery Moving Box Game gives players daily chances to win cash and prizes, both virtual and real world.
The push to promote The CW’s new actioner Nikita includes a free online game featured on DirecTV and Sony Pictures’ GSN site. Your mission in the espionage-themed game Nikita: Killzone, which is frontloaded with a clip from the show, is to break into the office of your target, hack into his computer, rack open his safe and find him in the site or your sniper rifle.
Boston-based Skycore has developed an iOS 4-compliant codeREADr app for the iPhone that turns the phone’s camera into a barcode scanner to validate print and mobile tickets on site. The company says the subscription-based app (starting at $10/mo.) can scan a 2D barcode, read the embedded data, transmit it to codeREADr servers and receive back validation results in as little as 1-2 seconds.
Male-oriented online publisher Break Media has made a quartet of new hires:
- Former MTV director Andy Signore has been tapped as Creative Lead of Break’s production studio
- Hillary Evans Wilcox, former Director of Digital Marketing for Martha Stewart Living, was named as VP/Integrated Marketing
- Mel Lewis was named UK-based Director of Sales & Partnerships
- Ryan Zangrilli was appointed as Detroit-based Account Executive
Twitter desktop client Seesmic has launched a completely revamped application intended to be an interface for all of users’ social networking needs. The interface has been expanded to not only keep up with your Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn feeds – you can also track your accounts on Foursquare, Google Buzz, Ping.fm, Bit.ly, TwitPic. The interface is very intuitive and flexible. Individual feeds can be assigned to their own columns, which is handy if you favor one network over another. Another very cool feature is Seesmic’s new plug-in marketplace, which allows third party developers to adopt mini apps for the platform. So far there are more than 40 plug-ins to choose from, including apps from YouTube, Google Reader, Ping.fm, MySpace and Ning. It’s always a challenge to get a broad swath of users to download a foreign application to the their desktop but this one will be a compelling add on for anyone who frequents social networks. Down the road, PC operating systems will include this kind of functionality with their email software. But until then, Seesmic has nailed the next generation social networking interface.
