Cynopsis: DIGITAL
10.07.13
Good morning. It’s Monday, October 7, 2013, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
Twitter is looking to launch a $1 billion IPO. The social site claimed revenue of $254 million from January to June 2013 – double the $122 million recorded in the first half of 2012. However, Twitter also reported a $69 million net loss.
In other words: Even with the $69 million deficit, Twitter is still growing rapidly. But take note: its IPO filing is still just a fraction of Facebook’s $16 billion filing when it went public last year.
Discovery Communications launched an online video network, Animalist, on Friday. The new net focuses on the connection between humans and animals, and already includes 15 miniseries that can be watched directly on www.Animalist.com.
Meredith announced plans to add five online video series to its digital platforms in 2014. Each will each consist of 12 to 24 episodes based on sponsorship deals, and will offer product placement opportunities to interested brands. Meredith already produces an original, Lords of the Playground, on its Parents YouTube channel.
Funny or Die is debuting the movie We Are Young, produced and directed by its own Alex Richanbach, two weeks before it hits theatres. The film already snagged 3,500 views on the site since it was released on Friday, and it will officially arrive in select theatres on Oct. 16.
Bedrocket released a new five-episode series called Asphalt NYC available on NetworkA.com. The show is a NYC version of the Sundance Festival winner Rene Johannson, and explores street performers from break-dancers to BMX riders in Queens.
YouTube’s Nerdist Channel premiered the third season of its Hollywood horror movie make-up series, Blood and Guts with Scott Ian. The five part series is hosted by band Anthrax guitarist Scott Ian. The first episode features Oscar-winning makeup designer Joel Harlow.
Netflix acquired exclusive rights to stream the YouTube video-inspired documentary, Bridegroom. The flick is based on producer Shane Bitney Crone’s YouTube video It Could Happen To You. It will be available on Netflix Oct. 27.
Showtime and HBO have been premiering pilot episodes of its hit shows on YouTube for the past year as a way to reel in new subscribers. Of course, the natural next step would be for premium cablers to offer online-only subscriptions to its shows. But that’s not gonna happen any time soon, according to Newsy.
In Other Words: Until these guys figure out a way to make as much money via online subs as they do with pricey cable bundles, Homeland and Veep won’t be distributed any other way.

On its blog, Instagram officially announced the strategy of its ad rollout. Users will begin to see an ad within their feed, but the plan is for the ad integration will “go slow,” since “seeing photos and videos from brands you don’t follow will be new.” The company did not disclose which companies have already struck a deal to start advertising on the app, but said they will come from “a handful of brands that are already great members of the Instagram community.”
Call for Submissions: Cynopsis is producing its annual Holiday Programming Guide, which comes out on November 26 and will be sent to all Cynopsis and Cynopsis Kids subscribers. Amazon is finally getting in on the set-top box market with a device set to launch for the holiday season. The Wall Street Journal reports the new set-top box will include Amazon Instant Video content as well as third-party applications. The Amazon Instant app is featured in other platforms like Roku, Xbox 360 and expected on the PS4.
HTC and Samsung reported drastically contrasting Q3 profits on Friday. While HTC reported a loss of $101 million, Samsung recorded a record-breaking $9.4 billion for the third quarter.
In other words: HTC was hoping the release of its latest smartphone HTC One would put the company back on track. And Samsung’s numbers could be topping what even Apple is expected to come in with.

DIGITAL SPOTLIGHT OF THE DAY
Cynopsis sat down with Believe Entertainment co-founders Dan Goodman and Bill Masterson to talk about the twitter video series they also produce, EpicEDM. The show interviews DJs and covers the music through short videos that are embedded into tweets at @EpicEDM. Goodman said the decision to stream EpicEDM primarily through Twitter came from “the very nature of how EDM fans, artists and DJs work on Twitter, and [we thought], why don’t we leverage this to build a content program to harness all that Twitter activity?” The twitter handle and show now have more than 150,000 followers on the site. Take a look at one of EpicEDM’s latest episode at www.cynopsis.com.
See you tomorrow,
Jessica Reese
