Cynopsis: Kids!
10/24/11
Good morning. It’s Monday, October 24, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.
Cyn opsis: Kids! presents a new A Few Questions For…
This week’s A Few Questions For… comes from the lair of Man of Action Studios and its founders, graphic novelists Joe Casey, Joe Kelly, Duncan Rouleau and Steven T. Seagle. Formed in 2002, Man of Action may be best known as the creators of the Ben 10 franchise and developers of Generator Rex, both of which air on Cartoon Network as part of its Friday night action-adventure programming block. The team is also currently working on a feature film, a co-production with Korean 3D animation studio SAMG, titled The 7Cs. They also continue to work on a Ben 10 feature film. Man of Action also created the video game X-Men: Legends for Activision, the Heroes Webcomic for NBC Universal, and the Darksiders: Wrath of War game for THQ, as well as selling movie scripts to several studios and TV pilots to various networks and entities. And they continue to write comics, books and well you get the idea … they do a lot of stuff. Because of the secrecy surrounding some of the organization’s projects I was blindfolded while creating questions for them. Here you go…
How did the four of you meet and decide it would be great to work together? How did you name the company and what does the name really mean?
We met writing big franchise super-hero comics for Marvel and DC like X-Men and Superman. We liked working together and making up big stories, so when we finally got off those roller-coaster books, we decided to form a think tank creative house that would continue to build big, crazy universes and MAN OF ACTION was born. We joke that the name speaks to the idea that our four brains together equal the creative power of one MAN OF ACTION!
Why do audiences around the world respond so enthusiastically to Ben 10?
There’s something about the shift from being little to being big and powerful that all kids relate to. When we’re younger we can’t wait to get older and more powerful and Ben is the living embodiment of that wish fulfilled. What makes him even more relatable is that Ben is always a kid a heart. He’s not a stuck-up super-hero who always does the right thing. He struggles and learns just like we do. That’s what we went for when we created Ben 10 and it really seems to have clicked. And Ben gets to change into cool, gross (but mostly cool) aliens icing on the cake!
Are more Ben 10 episodes in the works? If so, will Ben 10 get any new gadgets and/or powers? C’mon be specific….please.
People always want us to be specific and give away the good stuff before it happens! What is with that?! There has to be some fun and mystery left for when the episodes hit! But for you… just this once… okay. There are many more Ben 10 episodes in the works. And for new aliens, you don’t have to look any further than the upcoming Ben 10/Generator Rex: Heroes United crossover for a new one. He’s so new that even Ben doesn’t know what this one does! And wait until you see the crazy new Rex builds in that show! Anymore and we’d have to mind wipe you… or maybe we already did….
What’s going on with the Ben 10 feature film? What about the Ben 10/Generator Rex crossover?
Feature films take a very long time to pull together, so while work continues to push it forward, we’re still a long ways from being able to announce any specifics beyond the fact that legendary producer Joel Silver is working on it. Ben 10/Generator Rex: Heroes United, on the other hand, is just around the corner! We screened the full crossover at New York Comic-Con and the crowd went nuts! It was seriously a highlight of our careers, watching it with Rex voice actor Daryl Sabara and a room full of hundreds of laughing and cheering fans. The rest of you only have to wait until November, but it’s definitely worth the wait!
The gaming community is so demanding in terms of plot, characters, functionality, design and truthfulness to an original series. What is the most challenging part of creating a video game based on an existing property?
MAN OF ACTION wrote the script for Activision’s X-Men: Legends game a few years ago, and the reason they picked us is because we had all worked on the comic books. It was a smart move on their part because we already knew the characters and the world. So the biggest challenge is really just getting the right people in the creative seats at the onset. Other than that the challenge is that video game writing is really intensive lots of details and branching dialogue. It’s tough work!
Who are the 7Cs? It’s your first co-production. Have your co-production partners changed how you work as a team?
The 7C’s are a group of kids on a wild adventure in the Bermuda Triangle in a new show we created and have been working on with some of our amazing international partners. Each new creative task we jump into changes how we work together. But that’s what keeps us fresh. We never want to stop learning how we do what we do.
What kind of comics will you publish under your new Man of Action imprint, and for what audiences? When can we expect the first title?
We’ve actually been publishing under the MAN OF ACTION imprint through the always amazing Image Comics for a couple of years now. True to our ever-changing personalities and interests we’ve published everything from kid’s picture books like Frankie Stein and Douglas Fredericks and the House of They right up to graphic novels geared more for the parents of our Ben 10 fans.
So are there women at the Man of Action studios, and if so, what do they do?
MAN OF ACTION is a mystery handle designed to keep a shroud over who we are and what we do! The title itself applies only to the four of us who originated the company: Casey, Kelly, Rouleau, and Seagle; but yes, there are also women writers in the MAN OF ACTION brain trust.
Which Powerpuff would you want to be if you could be one? (OK- just kidding you don’t have to answer this I’m writing these questions for you while sitting in a middle seat on an airplane.)
MAN OF ACTION would never incriminate itself by answering such a soft question. But if it did, that answer would be: Buttercup. Is that even really even in doubt? She’s the best!

Director/artist Tim Burton (Pee Wee’s Big Adventure, Beetlejuice, Batman, Edward Scissorhands, The Nightmare Before Christmas, among many others) has designed a new balloon, B. Boy (B.), that will be featured in the 85th Anniversary Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade ( www.macys.com/parade ), which will take place on Thursday, November 24, 2011, airing live from NYC on NBC (9a-12p). Created by Burton with Macy’s Parade Studio team, B. a stitched together balloon boy with a uniquely Burton origin story, is 32-feet tall and 19-feet wide. According to Burton, B. was constructed from rejects of old birthday party balloons on the fourth of July in the basement of London’s Great Ormond Street Hospital. The balloon remnants came from kid’s parties that took place on the upper floors of the Hospital. Featuring pointed teeth and uneven stitches, B. was not allowed to play with the kids at the hospital, for fear of scaring kids. At that point B. withdrew to the basement of the Hospital where he obsessively watched his favorite movie, The Red Balloon, with a dream of one day also being able to fly high above the city and make one small child happy. Burton’s B. is part of Macy’s five-year-old Blue Sky Gallery series of balloons, which invites noted contemporary artists to create balloons for its annual holiday parade. Previously balloons have included those by artists Tom Otterness, Jeff Koons, Keith Haring and Takashi Murakami.
