Good Morning, it’s Monday, October 1, 2007 and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
Video sites like YouTube are helping to publicize the Buddhist monk protests in Myanmar, as citizens on the ground use the web to get the news out about the country’s repressive government’s crackdown. Despite a state-issued block on internet access (the government shut down Myanmar’s two ISPs), web-savvy users are finding ways to post photos and videos shot via camcorder and cell phones. Jim Carrey and the uscampaignforburma are also doing their part to raise awareness on the platform. Meanwhile over 100,000 Facebook users have joined a “Support the Monks” group as a show of solidarity.
If you can’t beat ’em, join ’em. Inspired by that montage of cheesy David Caruso one-liners, CBS launched the digital production studio EyeLab allowing fans and CBS producers to splice content together from CBS, CSTV and Showtime shows to create their own authorized mash ups. The re-edits will be used to promote CBS programming across CBS.com, the CBS Audience Network and CBS Mobile and will be embeddable on blogs, personal profile pages and video sharing sites.
Nick’s virtual world, Nicktropolis will transform its Downtown into a haunted destination featuring a Haunted House, Dracula’s Lair and The Mummy’s Tomb as part of company-wide “Shocktober” initiative. Kids can visit a pumpkin patch and pick one to put in their personalized rooms, or play a brand new online multiplayer game as team werewolf or vampire. Beginning Saturday, October 13, Nick.com will introduce a scream-themed mini site featuring scary games and videos for Halloween.
The Sesame Street Podcast ranked #1 on iTunes just a week after launching, thanks in part to guest spots from celebrities Jon Stewart, Matt Lauer, Sarah Jessica Parker and Chris Brown. The weekly 5-minute series features clips from current and past Sesame Street episodes as well as animated and live action shorts. American Greetings has signed on as its initial sponsor.
Camfire Media has created a home makeover reality show to help acquaint families with new technologies and showcase sponsor Verizon’s FiOS TV product. My Home 2.0 goes into families’ homes to updates them with brand new gear based upon each family’s needs. The episodes will also be airing in local Pennsylvania markets with plans for national distribution.
Bus Stop 31 Productions launched an online fashion/lifestyle ad-driven magazine show, 2 Chix Who Love Stuff! The Interactive shopping show utilizes Sherpa Technologies’ “click video” application, enabling users to link directly to “placed” products.
As it gears up to launch its own mobile phone, Google acquired Zingku, a start-up site offering a variety of mobile-based social networking functions. Zingku utilizes cell phones’ standard text messaging interface to store text and photo messages, to share postings with friends, to invite group members to events and to easily move content back and forth from the web to a phone.
The New York Rangers (owned by Cablevision’s Madison Square Garden LP) is suing the NHL claiming the league is seeking to monopolize the team’s web sites. The lawsuit claims the NHL demanded that MSG hand over control of nyrangers.com so that the league could convert it into a uniform site matching the look and feel of other nhl.com team destinations, threatening a $100,000 a day fine if the company didn’t comply.
Meanwhile, the MPAA is suing Cinematube.net and Ssupload.com for illegally posting copyrighted movies including Transformers and the latest Harry Potter extravaganza.
Reports that AT&T is looking to acquire EchoStar are circulating again as AT&T’s U-Verse video roll out continues to underwhelm. (The service has 100,000 customers at last count). This isn’t the first time the two companies have been linked; rumors began circulating back in late 2005 when AT&T was looking for cheaper way to enter the video market.
Microsoft unveiled set-top boxes called “Extenders” expected to hit stores in the coming weeks – hard drive components that will store and deliver MSN shows, movies, concerts and trailers to the television. The company’s version of the iTV will offer more than 100 hours of content from suppliers including MSNBC, Fox Sports and 20th Century Fox Television. Cisco Systems’ Linksys division will market an extender for $300, complete with a DVD player and a wireless access system.
YouTube’s AdSense added a new feature allowing participating sites to place targeted clip-to-play video ads above a clip of premium content. Embeddable, customizable players can be downloaded and stocked with frequently refreshed video from “premium content providers,” according to the AdSense site.
TNS Media Intelligence will be combined with TNS Media Research to better handle digital media measurement. The new platform plans to examine new revenue streams in the TV and online industries to meet demand for greater precision in measuring viewing and usage habits. Jean-Michel Portier has been appointed to lead the new operation.
Highly engaged consumers dubbed “passionistas” are much more likely than typical consumers to create and share content online about their passions and the brands associated with them, according to a new study from Yahoo! and MediaVest. Marketers can engage these advocates to spread brand messages through digital media, gaining transaction and credibility. For every one-minute a typical user spends online with the same content, Passionistas spend six minutes. Devotees will also visit a website related to their passions three times more than a typical user and search online for information about their interests 184 percent more than typical users.
Steve Sharp has joined CBS Television Stations Digital Media Group as VP/Business Development, reporting to Jonathan Leess, President & GM and Aaron Radin, SVP/Ad Sales & Business Development. He will work on developing new content, marketing and advertising partnerships for the group’s websites and wireless platforms.
Goodnight Burbank creator Hayden Black is launching a new series Abigail’s X-Rated Teen Diary today, skewering pop culture and teen confessionals in one minute segments to be updated three times a week. Goodnight Burbank is one of the most inspired shows on the web, so this should be good fun.
