Cynopsis: DIGITAL
10/17/11

Good morning, it’s Monday, October 17, 2011, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.  If you would like to read this or any other Cynopsis edition online, click here

Microsoft has finally closed its deal to acquire Skype for $8.5 billion, a deal which was originally announced back in May. As per the announcement, the internet calling service provider will become a new division inside Microsoft, led by now former Skype CEO Tony Bates as the division’s President. Skype’s current products will continue to be offered, however Microsoft has plans to integrate Skype’s technology into its lineup of products. In fact, according to the Microsoft blog post announcing the deal’s completion, Microsoft says, “In the near future, Skype will be connecting on Xbox Live and VideoKinect for Xbox Live. In addition to skyping with Xbox Live gamers, Skype users will be able to connect with Microsoft Lync Enterprise Voice for your school or university. Later this year, Skype and Lync clients will be available on the Windows Phone 7.5 (Mango) … This is all just the beginning.”

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

The Hulu bidding process seems to have reached its inevitable conclusion, in that Hulu owners have decided ultimately to not sell the video site to Google, Amazon, Dish Network or anyone else. According to TechCrunch, Hulu wanted over $2 billion for the site, but was only consenting to streaming rights for a couple of years. The intent behind this move was to then have the new owner of the site pay a new, likely spiked up licensing fee for more content, a less-than-thrilling prospect for the potential bidders. Google had offered a reported $4 billion, but they wanted streaming rights for much longer. In the end, it eliminated any chance of the video site coming into the hands of new ownership.

Google is shutting down Google Buzz, its Gmail-based social network that has taken a backseat to Google+. Old Buzz content will be available for a few weeks to allow users to export any of their data. Also, joining Buzz on CEO Larry Page’s housecleaning trash heap is Jaiku, iGoogle social features and Code Search, and the Google Labs site will also no longer be available.

Sportsman Channel, an outdoor sports and activities TV/digital channel, has produced a segment with the Atlanta Falcons that is currently available on Xfinity on Demand‘s Get Local ATL channel. Fishing with the Falcons documents an annual event where members of the Falcons, from former players to the head coach, president and even cheerleaders, pair up with war veterans as they go out on individual fishing boats and compete for prizes. It is available through December 12.

Crashlytics, a crash reporting solution for mobile app developers has secured $1 million in seed funding. Crashlytics speeds up and streamlines the process of app developers receiving information on app crashes by providing information such as the software version, model and orientation of the device at the moment of crash, along with the exact line of code the device crashed on; all via its own online dashboard.

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

Tremor Video has unveiled a new interactive Super Pre-Roll video ad unit that takes control of up to 80% of screen space, but only if/when a viewer engages with the ad by either clicking on it or hovering over it for more than three seconds. While advertisers had to previously negotiate with individual publishers to provide similar ad takeover experiences, Tremor enables them to serve such ads through its video network. DreamWorks’ Real Steel is the first advertiser to use it.

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

Motorola Mobility announced on Friday that it has set a time and date for its stockholders to meet and vote on the impending acquisition of the company by Google. Last August, Google agreed to buy Motorola Mobility for $12.5 billion. Stockholders at the close of business last Tuesday, October 11, will be allowed to vote at the special meeting that will take place on November 17, 2011, in San Diego. As for the deal itself, antitrust legislators still have it under review.

  ~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

Real-Time-Bidding (RTB) is forecasted to reach $6.47 billion in ad spending by 2015 in the U.S. and major markets in Western Europe, based on findings from a study conducted by PubMatic, an ad management and monetization technology provider, and IDC. In fact, the white paper predicts that display ad sales based on RTB will see a growth of 71% in the U.S. between 2010 and 2015, 114% in the U.K., 103% in France and 99% in Germany. The findings have also been published in PubMatic’s Ad Revenue Report in conjunction with its Ad Revenue 4 conference that took place on Friday in New York.

According to a study from VINDICO, a provider of video ad management services, mid-roll video ads see a 93% completion rate within long-form video content, making them more effective than pre-roll (83% completion rate) or post-roll ads (85%). The study also found many video ad campaigns accompanying long-form videos lack sufficient pod placement labeling; something VINDICO cites as a huge opportunity to better understand online viewing behavior.

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

Thanks to finally having both the iPhone 4S and iPhone 4 in its lineup, Sprint broke its previous record of single-day sales by 1pm ET on Friday, the same day the iPhone first went on sale.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Tremor Video has hired Justin Johnson as Vice President of West Coast Sales. Johnson will be in charge of the online video technology company’s general sales teams based in San Francisco and Los Angeles.

Twitter’s Vice President of Engineering, Mike Abbott, is leaving the company after just a year at his post to pursue investment opportunities, reports AllThingsD; specifically, he is coming on board at Benchmark Capital as an Entrepreneur-in-Residence. He will still support the team at Twitter, but now from his new perch at the venture firm. No replacement has been named yet.

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

Today in cool things that also have a significant purpose, check out: Documentaryguide.com; a new website that has catalogued tens of thousands of social documentaries, websites, schools and festivals for the purpose of offering the viewer an extensive library of documentary films and content, for free. The open search database was created to provide filmmakers, educators, students and any other interested group a place to find socially relevant resources and content. So whether you’re a film buff, simply love documentaries, or want to find something to help you learn or teach, this is not a bad site to have at your arsenal.
