Sprint Nextel plans to launch its 4G LTE service next year in an aggressive manner that will extend coverage to 250 million people and over 260 markets by the end of 2013. The company said that it expects to offer 15 LTE-compatible devices next year, reports CNET. Sprint also plans to use the 1900MHz spectrum as it rolls out the LTE service, with further plans to share LightSquared’s 1600MHz spectrum via a separate deal. This move is an effort to keep up with the expanding services and offerings from Verizon and AT&T, who have already begun building their own next-generation networks using the same technology. The first Sprint 4G LTE device is expected to be released midway through 2012.
Netflix and AMC Networks have reached a multi-year licensing agreement that will bring prior seasons of the network’s popular zombie series, The Walking Dead, to the streaming service’s subscribers in the U.S. and Canada. Season 1 will be available immediately with additional seasons showing up prior to the premiere of subsequent seasons. Certain, but currently undisclosed, other programming from AMC and Sundance Channel will also become available.
YouTube has rolled out its movie rental service in the U.K. The site has a library of more than a thousand feature films, including The Dark Knight and Reservoir Dogs, as well as classic British programming such as the Monty Python movies. Prices range from 2.49 to 3.49 pounds and viewers have 30 days to watch the rentals, with 48 hours to finish them once the film has been started. The Google-owned site already has similar services available in the U.S. and Canada.
Universal Pictures‘ Tower Heist, directed by Brett Ratner and starring Eddie Murphy and Ben Stiller, will be available on VOD only three weeks after its theatrical release for the almost 500,000 Comcast subscribers in the Atlanta and Portland, Oregon markets, according to The LA Times. The price? $60.
BlackBerry maker RIM has confirmed to AllThingsD that it has inked a deal (for an unconfirmed price tag of $100 million) to acquire NewBay Software, a white-label cloud-based content services provider. NewBay’s LifeCache software is currently being used by numerous carriers including T-Mobile, AT&T and Verizon, so integration with the platform should be easier in order to provide cloud-based content services. However, the report also mentions that RIM has entered the cloud services arena late when compared to competitors such as Apple’s iCloud, Amazon’s Cloud Drive and Google cloud apps.
The speech recognition software company behind Apple’s Siri, Nuance Communications, has bought Swype Inc. for $102.5 million to enhance its smartphone and tablet offerings. Swype is the maker of a keyboard for touchscreen devices that allows users to create words by sliding a finger or stylus from letter to letter. Swype is currently offered and is popular on Google’s Android operating system.
According to research from Berg Insight, mobile app downloads will hit 98 billion by 2015. In conjunction, app revenue is also slated to grow to the amount of $11.8 billion in 2015. The analyst firm’s report also found that Apple’s iOS was the leader in direct monetization of mobile apps; a position which Berg predicts Apple won’t lose through 2015, and will be followed by Android and Windows Phone in that order.
A+E Networks Digital Media received 17.5 million unique visitors and 31.1 million total visits across all of its web properties in the month of September, both are new all-time records in their respective categories for the company. Leading the way was History.com and myLifetime.com.
LifeGoesStrong.com, the boomer lifestyle site from Digital Works @NBCU and Procter & Gamble Productions, has unveiled apps for both the iPhone and iPad to deliver original articles, slideshows, quizzes and polls targeted towards adults between the ages of 45 to 65. Interactive mobile content will cover a variety of topics including health, style, tech, family, work and more.
Citing health problems, newspaper publisher and broadcaster Gannett Chairman and CEO, Craig Dubow, will step down. Gracia Martore has been promoted to President and CEO from President and COO.
