AT&T has decided to withdraw its FCC application that sought approval for a proposed merger with rival T-Mobile USA. The move was made to prevent the FCC from sending the application for a hearing in front of an agency administrative federal law judge. Earlier in the week, the FCC chairman had indicated that he would seek such a hearing before an administrative law judge citing the belief that such a proposed merger would hurt competition. By withdrawing its application, AT&T said that the FCC would not be able to vote and move forward on the FCC head’s proposal. However, this doesn’t mean the proposed merger is dead in the water. “AT&T Inc. and Deutsche Telekom AG are continuing to pursue the sale of Deutsche Telekom’s US wireless assets to AT&T and are taking this step to facilitate the consideration of all options at the FCC and to focus their continuing efforts on obtaining antitrust clearance for the transaction from the Department of Justice,” both companies said in a joint statement. “As soon as practical, AT&T Inc. and Deutsche Telekom AG intend to seek the necessary FCC approval.” In the meantime, AT&T also announced that it will take a charge of $3 billion in cash and $1 billion in spectrum it would owe Deutsche Telekom if the deal fails to get regulatory approval.
Last week, Google announced that the first few of what will eventually be hundreds of feature films from Disney’s library are coming to YouTube‘s movie rental service. Films made under both the Disney and the Pixar banners will be available in the US and Canada, joining movies from Sony Pictures, Universal and Warner Bros. that are already on the service. Popular titles now available due to the agreement include Alice in Wonderland, Winnie the Pooh, Cars and Cars 2 and all four Pirates of the Caribbean entries.
Finland-based Conmio, a mobile services provider that counts the New York Times, NPR, Gannett and Bloomberg among its clientele, has inked a deal with MTV MEDIA to bring MTV’s online TV service Katsomo to a new range of mobile devices. The mobile version of the Katsomo service, which offers online versions of TV programming from MTV Media, will be launched first on the iPhone and iPad with other platforms coming on board in the future. The service employs HTML5 tools in order to create a web-based app that makes it easier for users to gain access to content without needing to worry about constant app software updates.
Swedish broadcaster TV4’s multi-platform viewing app, TV4 Play, will now be available for the iPad, according to Broadband TV News. The app, which is also available for the iPhone, Android devices and Samsung and LG connected TVs, offers free and paid content from TV4’s programming lineup. Viewers can watch free content for seven days following the show’s original air date, while the premium version of the app also offers additional content such as exclusive previews and archived programming that is commercial-free.
Over the Thanksgiving holiday, San Francisco-based technology company Playkast powered a Facebook campaign that enabled fans of Family Feud’s Facebook page to audition for the game show directly through the social media channel. The company seeks to help casting execs reach a wider audience by bringing in online video and engagement into the casting and auditioning process. By encouraging fans to record and publish auditions, Playkast also delivers fresh video content for any show that employs the company’s service.
According to AllThingsD, Yahoo is scaling back direct access to its ad inventory for many demand-side platforms (DSPs), which includes several well-funded ad technology start-ups and, most notably, Google. DSPs are companies that help ad buyers negotiate real-time bidding exchanges, like Google’s AdX and Yahoo’s Right Media. Yahoo told DSPs such as MediaMath, Turn and Google’s Invite Media that they could no longer buy Yahoo inventory on behalf of clients. Instead, the clients would have to buy direct. The movie is a part of a larger effort by the web company to regain a stronger control over its inventory that it had been previously selling to external vendors. By doing this, Yahoo hopes to get to a point where it would be able to sell ads at higher rates.
Digital marketing technology provider PointRoll has reported record growth in online shopping this year in the week leading up to Black Friday. Specifically, there was a 14% increase in retailers’ digital circular offers powered through PointRoll’s ShopLocal technology from 2010 to 2011, and an overall 15% jump in page views across the top ten retailers. In fact, for the Sunday before Thanksgiving, there was a 49% spike in website traffic and a 65% jump in page views over the same day in 2010. Furthermore, the increase in online shopping on PointRoll’s marketing and advertising solutions extends to other platforms. Mobile device usage was up 5% and consumers accessing deals via iPads grew 85% over 2010, which was largely driven by activity on the Sunday before Black Friday, as mobile and iPad access increased by 234% and 223% respectively on that day compared to 2010.
Online video management, publishing, analytics and monetization company Ooyala has released some statistics regarding early adopters of the Kindle Fire. Compared to iPad viewers, early Kindle Fire adopters are 20 times more likely to watch video on a tech blog, 1.3 times more likely to watch sports videos and equally likely to watch news. In addition, the top five adopters by city are Los Angeles, New York, Seattle, Chicago and Atlanta, in that order. In terms of total video displays, the top five states are California, Texas, Florida, New York and Washington, in that order.
European-based satellite pay-TV provider M7 Group SA has hired Jon Florsheim to be its new CEO and member of the board, reports Broadband TV News. In a statement regarding his new role, Florsheim said, “I’m looking forward to working with the team in Luxembourg and all its partners across the various countries to build and grow the business.”

Fanhattan is an entertainment discovery iOS app that lets you search for content within different services like Netflix, Vudu, iTunes and Hulu Plus. Instead of having to navigate the different mobile offerings from such digital media services, you can look for programming and content directly through the app. Not only can you find movies and TV shows, but Fanhattan also provides you access to reviews from Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic, user ratings, trailers, cast and crew bios, soundtracks and merchandise. Furthermore, it also gives you the option to rent, buy or “subscribe” to the content you’ve found straight through the app. So give it a glance if you find yourself on the prowl for something new, especially because it won’t cost you a dime! As a side note, if you find yourself not having an iPhone or iPad with which to access this app, the company has plans to extend its service to both connected TVs and the web in the future.
