The video game industry gained new bragging rights last week as Activision announced that its first person shooting game “Call of Duty: Black Ops” generated more than $650 million in worldwide sales 5 days after its release. The total beat out its predecessor’s previous record to become the most successful entertainment launch week in history, including five-day box-office, book and video game sell-through records.
 

 
Apple and News Corp. are planning to launch a new subscription-based digital newspaper exclusively for the iPad, according to a report in Women’s Wear Daily. Former New York Post Managing Editor Jesse Angelo began working full-time for outfit, dubbed “The Daily,” earlier this year joined by Mike Nizza, formerly of The NYTimes; ABC News producer Steve Alperin and Pete Picton, online editor at The Sun in the U.K.
 
IFC and the satiric Onion News Network are teaming to produce a new half hour comedy show premiering on IFC Jan. 21, 2011 at 10 pm ET/PT. Not to be confused with “The Onion SportsDome,” which launches on Comedy Central 10 days earlier, it stars actress and former Fox News anchor Suzanne Sena as Brooke Alvarez.
 
Amazon‘s Kindle Store announced a new program to allow Kindle owners and non-owners alike to gift Kindle Books to users of the popular e-Reader. The Kindle store now stocks over 725,000 digital books.

 
Sony has launched an online casting initiative called “Face of the Fan“, allowing fans to try out for a part in the 4th installment of Sony/Screen Gems’ Underworld franchise. Users can download select pages from a script to rehearse, and then upload their audition video and other credentials for submission. The reels will be reviewed by a panel of studio and production executives, and the program will be used for future Sony projects including Screen Gems’ “Mortal Instruments,” Columbia Pictures’/Sony Pictures Animation’s “The Smurfs” and SPT’s Wheel of Fortune.
 
Former American Idol judge Paula Abdul is lending her name to yet another online auditioning platform called AuditionBooth, enabling wannabe stars to submit talent reels and online profiles to audition for TV shows, ad campaigns, and other talent searches via webcam. A campaign for a new perfume from fashion retail chain Dots, endorsed by Idol winner Jordin Sparks, will kick things off.

The FCC is moving toward putting forth a net neutrality proposal similar to a telco industry compromise pitched to Energy and Commerce Committee Chair Rep. Henry Waxman, reports Politico. The proposal, which may go as far as prohibiting wireless companies from blocking any app, service or device, could surface as early as next month.
 
Tivo signed a deal with Telenor’s Canal Digital to supply DVR technology for Direct-to-Home (DTH) satellite customers in Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Finland.
 

 
The growth of Facebook continues unabated, with visits increasing 60% from the same week last year, according to Experian’s Hitwise to represent 10% of all U.S. internet visits last week. Content consumption on the social network has also grown substantially where nearly 1 in 4 page views in the U.S. took place on Facebook.com for the week ending November 13, 2010. The site’s market share of page views was 24.27% last week, 3.8x the volume of the 2nd ranked website YouTube with 6.93%.
 

 
Oceanhouse Media has just released a pair of $2.99 digital books for the iPhone/iPad and iPod Touch based on the Children’s classics “The Berenstain Bears” and “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.“ The Rudolph app features word associations, professional narration and animated effects and promotes vocabulary building by highlighting individual words highlighted as the story is read. The Berenstain Bears Give Thanks app, the 10th in a series, teaches Thanksgiving-themed lessons about thankfulness and the love of family.
 

 
Reports are surfacing that socially-structured blogging platform Tumblr has raised between $25 million and $30 million, putting its valuation at a healthy $135 million. The site, which enables users to create mixed-media blog posts with elegance and simplicity, reached a turning point this year, extending to a community of some 47 million unique visitors and over 24 million publishers. The visual nature of its interface and site design has made it extremely popular among artists, animators, graphic designers and fashionistas. Tumblr posts can take the form of text, images, quotes, links, chats, audio clips or videos and half of all posts on the platform are photos. The site has really led the way in adding customization features, allowing creative folks to put their imprint on their blogs.
