Good morning. It’s Monday, November 19, 2012, and this is your first early morning briefing.
BabyFirst, a cable and satellite channel aimed at babies, toddlers and moms, completes its transition from a subscription-based model to a basic ad sales-supported network. To that end BabyFirst names Trifecta Media as the channel’s exclusive ad sales rep. BabyFirst will launch as an ad-supported channel with 3:00 minutes per hour of advertising avails. Billboarded blocks will also be available. Launched in 2006, BabyFirst is available via Comcast systems and the family tiers of both DirecTV and Dish Network and is currently reaches 35 million homes with a goal of increasing that to 50+ million homes by mid-2013.
NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
Looks like author/screenwriter Jane Goldman is in line to pen a script for Warner Bros. live-action big screen adaptation of Pinocchio, per THR. While there has been no official announcement, both director Tim Burton and actor Robert Downy Jr. have been continually associated with the project. Goldman previously teamed several times with director Matthew Vaughn on projects including the movie version of Neil Gaiman’s Stardust, the movie Kick-Ass and X-Men: First Class.
Simon & Schuster Children’s Books UK acquires the worldwide English language rights to three titles from the year-old, kid-targeted online trading card game Fight My Monster (www.fightmymonster.com) and will launch a new publishing program. The first title, Fight My Monster Monstrous Official Guide, has just been released (25th October 2012), with the other two titles set to follow in summer 2013. Earlier this fall, US-based Dimensional Branding Group appointed Lisle International as its exclusive licensing agency for the Fight My Monster brand in the UK and Ireland.
Lima Sky, creators of the mobile/tablet game Doodle Jump, inks a raft of licensing deals to develop and distribute Doodle Jump-themed apparel and accessories for Europe and the UK. New Doodle Jump licensing partners include: Brussels-based Van der Erve will be offer Doodle Jump-branded apparel to retailers across Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Germany, Austria, France, and Switzerland; Santex will also make an range of Doodle Jump apparel available through the Inditex Group’s stores in Spain, Germany, Austria, and Switzerland; AA Brands offers a line of licensed tops to select retailers in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland; Nastrovie will also create a line of tops for Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, available exclusively online or by direct mail; Blues Clothing will produce a full collection of kid’s apparel that will be available at UK retailers.

Mind Candy, creator of Moshi Monsters, and McDonald’s USA unveil a new promotional partnership that will feature Moshi Monsters characters in McDonald’s Happy Meals at participating restaurants across North America. The four-week promotion will run at McDonald’s restaurants December 14 through January 10, with pre-promotion beginning November 23, and will offer one of eight Moshi Monsters characters, including an new mystery Moshling that will be unveiled as part of the promotion. The characters will include Katsuma, Poppet and IGGY while supplies last. Additionally, each toy premium comes with a free 3-day membership to MoshiMonsters.com. McDonald’s will support the partnership with a fully integrated marketing campaign that includes TV ads, in-restaurant merchandising at 14,000+ locations, custom packaging and online presence at happymeal.com.

The Hub celebrates “Fappiano” (that’s Thanksgiving on ALF’s home planet of Melmac) with a special 12-hour ALF marathon this Thursday, November 22 (6a-6p). Over the holiday weekend, The Hub will also host a Black Friday movie marathon, Friday, November 23 (4p-4a), offering movies including Cats & Dogs (4-6p), Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore (6-8p) and Monster House (8-10p). Then on Saturday, November 24, the network will feature new episodes of several of its original series, including a special holiday-themed musical episode of Pound Puppies at 9a, as well as new episodes of Care Bears: Welcome to Care-a-Lot, My Little Pony Friendship is Magic, Littlest Pet Shop, Kaijudo: Rise of the Duel Masters, Dan Vs. and R.L. Stine’s The Haunting Hour: The Series.
PBS Kids will premiere two special seasonal episodes of the new preschool series Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood this week. Debuting today, Monday, November 19 (check local listings), is an episode in which Daniel Tiger learns to try new foods, followed on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 22 (check local listings), by another new episodes that find Daniel and his Neighborhood of Make-Believe pals learning to celebrate things for which they are thankful. Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood is an animated multiplatform series based on the classic PBS series Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood. Set in the animated version of Rogers’ original Neighborhood of Make Believe and starring four-year-old Daniel Tiger (son of the Daniel Tiger character from Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood), Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood is produced by The Fred Rogers Company, which it developed in association with Out of the Blue Enterprises (Super Why). The series is animated by 9 Story Entertainment (Almost Naked Animals, Wild Kratts, among many others).
National Wildlife Federation (www.nwf.org), publisher of the 50-year-old kid’s magazine Ranger Rick, unveils plans for the Ranger Rick brand to launch new products aimed at younger kids, including the new print effort Ranger Rick Jr. Magazine (www.rangerrickjr.org) and digital content Ranger Rick Jr. Appventures. Designed to address beginner readers interests and early learning skills, the 36-page, advertising free, Ranger Rick Jr. Magazine, which launches December 2012, introduces the new young character Ricky Raccoon and will feature facts and animal photography as well as a Green Time page of outdoor activities in every issue. NWF will publish 10 issues of the title per year for $19.95 (newsstands for $3.99), with digital versions available for the Nook (bn.com) and Kindle (amazon.com). Meanwhile, available now is the storybook app for the iPad, Ranger Rick Jr. Appventures Lions! ($4.99). The app was developed in partnership with Moonbot Studios (The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore.)
Disney Publishing launches two new Wreck-It Ralph apps and the new Mickey Mouse Clubhouse app, all are available for iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch:
– Wreck-It Ralph: Hero’s Duty Interactive Comic ($1.99) a prequel to the movie, this app includes 22 interactive comic pages with original artwork and unique games, 2 reading modes: panel by panel and autoplay, sound effects, and a new soundtrack inspired by the movie; Wreck-It Ralph Storybook Deluxe ($6.99) the app lets young readers follow Ralph’s adventures and story through illustrations and narration with multiple reading levels and interactive games. The app features original character voices from the movie including John C. Reilly, Jack McBrayer, Jane Lynch and Sarah Silverman.
– Mickey Mouse Clubhouse: Mickey’s Wildlife Count Along ($1.99) Based on Disney Junior’s Mickey Mouse Clubhouse series, this first math and science Disney Learning app invites readers to join Mickey and his friends on a trip to Mickey Beach, featuring various environments where they practice early math concepts and activities (counting, sequencing, more/less, matching, etc.) using animals and learn about wildlife habitats.

EXECUTIVE MOVES
Mattel‘s Board of Directors appoints CEO Bryan G. Stockton (59), as Chairman of the Board effective January 1, 2013. Stockton, who joined Mattel in 2001, will take over the position from Robert A. Eckert (58), who has announced he will retire from as director and Chairman of the Board on December 31, 2012. Stockton will continue to serve as CEO, a position held since January 2012. Stockton was previously COO, responsible for the day-to-day operations of Mattel and its business units, including Mattel Brands, Fisher-Price, American Girl, and the North American and International divisions, as well as for Operations and Corporate Responsibility. Prior to that he served as EVP/Business Planning and Development – including managing mergers and acquisitions and also was Mattel’s President/International overseeing the toy company’s business outside the US. Eckert joined Mattel in 2000 as chairman and CEO from Kraft Foods.
