Sony announced on Saturday it had removed the names and partial addresses of 2,500 sweepstakes contestants from the internet that had been stolen by hackers and posted on a website affiliated with Sony Electronics. The company is working on restoring service after suffering one of the broadest attacks yet leveled at a public gaming site. Sony CEO Sir Howard Stringer also announced a $1 million identity theft insurance policy for users late last week in an apology letter posted on the PlayStation blog. The program will offer a free identity protection plan to any affected users who register for the program by June 18.
The U.S. Pentagon released 5 home videos depicting Osama Bid Laden seized by the Navy SEALs during the raid on the late terrorist’s home. Officials described the audio-less clips to the AP as the “largest collection of senior terrorist material ever collected.”
TLC.com, Discovery Digital Media and Church & Dwight, Co., Inc., the makers of the First Response home pregnancy test, have returned with a second season of a short-form web series following the roads of six different couples on the road to conception. Season two will turn the cameras on the male partners as they keep video journals documenting the challenges involved.
Facebook is working on a new program that will pay users in Facebook credits for watching video ads. Intended to improve upon the low click-through rates of ads, the model will be initially tested by social gamers such as Zynga, CrowdStar and Digital Chocolate. The Bellevue, WA-based company lost nearly 100k subscribers to fall to 33.6 million customers overall. Rep. Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.) and Rep. Joe Barton (R-Texas), the co-chairmen of the Congressional Privacy Caucus, announced plans to release the “Do Not Track Kids Act of 2011” this week. The act would put into place numerous protections for children and teens, including the requirement of parental consent to collect personal information online.
Worldwide smartphone sales surged impressively during Q1 with sales increasing 80% year-over-year, according to researcher IDC.
