Mashable is launching a new original video series today. The website’s first episodic, documentary-style show, Behind the Launch will be following Vungle, a start-up that aims to help mobile developers market their apps by creating video trailers for those apps. The series will go behind-the-scenes at product meetings, investors meetings, job interviews, the search for office space, and more as Vungle scales to launch. New episodes of the show will air every Monday and Wednesday at 12pm ET until the end of June, with each episode being 3-4 minutes long. Microsoft will be the exclusive sponsor of the series. “The show represents an important step in Mashable’s video strategy and our goal of creating entertaining content that brings the stories people are used to reading about on the site to life,” said Adam Ostrow, SVP/Content & Executive Editor. Vungle, as reported last week, recently secured a $2 million seed round and is backed by Google Ventures, AOL Ventures, and Crosslink Capital.
Eric Kessler, Co-President of HBO, has announced that HBO Go would be available on the Kindle Fire on June 10, timed with the fifth season premiere of True Blood, according to Multichannel News. The announcement was made in front of the attendees of NewBay Media’s “TV in Multiplatform World” conference. Kessler also noted that the service would continue to be rolled out to other platforms on an ongoing basis throughout 2012.
Eyeboogie, the production company behind VH1’s Pop Up Video series and NatGeo’s POPPED, recently launched a new channel on YouTube. Focusing on pop culture, original programming on the PopSpot channel includes Pop-Spot Video, which mimics the VH1 show by providing behind-the-scenes information on famous viral videos. Another show, Today’s the Day, puts each day of the year in a historical context by highlighting famous moments that had happened on the same day in previous years.
Cablevision may be planning to launch a Netflix competitor, via a service that is similar to Comcast’s Streampix offering, according to BTIG Research analyst Richard Greenfield. “While the timing is uncertain, we believe Cablevision is concerned about the coming Verizon/Redbox joint-venture that is expected to launch (in beta) this summer,” writes Greenfield. The service may arrive later this year.
LifeStreet Media, an in-app advertising company for Facebook, iOS, and Android developers, has received $66 million in financing from Nautic Partners. The terms of the investment indicate that the capital will go toward continued growth in the social and mobile display advertising space, as well as “to facilitate liquidity to investors.” LifeStreet says that it has driven over 200 million social and mobile app installs; has paid out over $100 million of advertising revenue to social and mobile developers; and reaches a monthly audience that exceeds 350 million. The company also says that it has been increasing its investment in its social in-app advertising solution, mobile advertising, and its core RevJet technology platform, which “applies Iterative High Velocity Testing (IHVT) to any digital revenue driver, ranging from visual objects such as ads and landing pages to logical objects such as trafficking decisions and revenue maximization algorithms.”
TechCrunch reports that social media management platform Hootsuite is in the midst of raising a $50 million round of funding that would value the company at $500 million, a valuation number which was confirmed to the website by HootSuite CEO Ryan Holmes. The report also indicates that potential investors could include Google, Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter; the networks that are directly linked to Hootsuite.
LiveIntent has unveiled its LFX platform, which is designed for publishers to monetize their email newsletter subscribers across multiple platforms/devices. In addition to publishers’ direct ad sales forces, LFX now enables advertisers, DSPs, and agency trading desks to buy and bid on a publisher’s subscriber base. Campaigns can be targeted based on location, device, time of day, and browser, as well as demographics such as gender, age, and household income. LFX also enables the use of first- and third-party data for targeting purposes. LiveIntent is also providing advertisers with brand safety options through a partnership with DoubleVerify, as well as providing consumers with assurance through the DAA’s AdChoices program. Razorfish, Neo@Ogilvy, and Varick Media Management are among LFX’s launch advertising partners.
LinkedIn has acquired content-sharing service SlideShare for approximately $118.75 million, of which 45% will be in cash and 55% in stock. SlideShare is designed for professionals, enabling them to upload and share presentations (can be in the form of powerpoints, documents, and videos) for free. SlideShare users have uploaded more than nine million presentations to date. In addition, the company reports that nearly 7.4 million presentations are hosted by SlideShare across more than 1.4 million unique domains. According to comScore data, SlideShare attracted nearly 29 million unique visitors in March 2012. The acquisition is expected to close during the second quarter of 2012.

Yahoo! and ABC News are highlighting some data regarding their news and content partnership, which includes the launch of five original video series, that began this past October. Citing comScore data, the ABC News and Yahoo! News partnership streamed more than 483 million videos in March 2012. Power Players, a daily political series featuring the likes of George Stephanopoulos and Jake Tapper, has had more than 16.4 million streams since it launched in January of this year. Overall, Yahoo! News and ABC News’ lineup of digital original series (Katie’s Take, Newsmakers, Power Players, This Could Be Big with Bill Weir, and Around the World with Christiane Amanpour) have been viewed nearly 60 million times. comScore data finds that over 54% of all news and information videos viewed online in North America in March were through the Yahoo! News/ABC News network.
Based off of impressions across its ad network, Chitika Insights found that the iPad accounted for 94.64% of all tablet-based traffic. Second place was the Samsung Galaxy tablet, which grabbed a traffic share of 1.22%. Barnes & Noble’s Nook came in last among the devices studied by Chitika with a traffic share of 0.53% (“In defense of the Nook, it is used primarily as an e-reader, with the capabilities of a tablet,” wrote Chitika).
FANS.tv is a social TV website that lets users check-in to television programs, participate in live chats, and unlock virtual rewards while watching any show on TV. Its most notable offering is the Playlist feature, which allows users to share their personal TV schedules (including what they have watched, are watching, and are planning to watch) and make recommendations. The site also allows user to post comments on Facebook and Twitter. What may set this website apart from other online social TV platforms is that it comes from FANS, an Australia and U.S.-based company that has powered live social TV experiences for The CW network and thebachelor.tv (the alumni and casting site for the popular reality TV series), among others.
