Cynopsis: Kids!
03/26/12
Good morning. It’s Monday, March 26, 2012, and this your first early morning briefing.
Answering a few of our questions this week is David Levine, VP and GM, Disney XD Worldwide. Levine oversees the multiplatform Disney XD including direction and scheduling, and works with the channel’s programming team to identify acquisition and co-production opportunities. In addition to being responsible for the Disney XD brand and channel in the US, he also supports Disney XD channels around the world including original content development and programming acquisition strategy. Levine joined Disney ABC Cable Networks Group in March 2004, and prior to this served as VP/Worldwide Programming Strategy, Acquisitions and Co-Productions for Disney Channels Worldwide. He led the task force to launch Disney XD channel in the US and guided its roll out worldwide. He previously toiled as VP/Business Affairs and Development, Ragdoll USA, as General Counsel for The itsy bitsy Entertainment Company. He began his career entertainment career at Marvel Entertainment Group, working in legal compliance of its licensees.
Disney XD is about to launch Marvel Universe on Sunday April 1, a weekly hour-long programming block (Sundays 11a-12n), which will feature the new animated series Ultimate Spider-Man and the second season of The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, as well as new short-form Marvel-centric series. Has the Disney brand changed these Marvel characters in any way?
All of the great characteristics and the essence of the Marvel characters are the same. We want to provide true Marvel storytelling on Marvel Universe on Disney XD. It will be the premiere destination for Marvel fans and will be the gateway for a whole new generation of fans. Marvel Animation produces these series for the Disney XD kid audience and has its Marvel DNA woven throughout. Marvel continuously re-invents its characters, and they did so with some of the supporting cast – in “Ultimate Spider-Man” there are some new teen versions of well-known super heroes to fight alongside Spidey, and the fans will be intrigued by these new iterations.
Disney XD is targeted primarily to boys. Are boys the same around the world? How do you change or adapt the programming, network attitude and positioning for different territories and their respective cultures?
When Disney looked to launch a new platform for boys, we did a lot of research around the world to find out what boys wanted. We learned that there were great similarities amongst boys around the world – they want to achieve, they want to figure out how to be better in sports, tell the funny joke, do well in school and make their parents proud. They loved the feeling of accomplishment and feeling unstoppable. Disney XD was created to give boys what they want – delivering stories about becoming, about growing, but all the while laughing and having fun.
You worked with key Marvel talent in creating the Ultimate Spider-Man series. What was the toughest challenge in developing a new Spider-Man series specifically to reach Disney XD’s key Boy demo?
When we did the initial research for Disney XD, we asked boys what character would fit on the channel we were creating – and Spider-Man continuously topped the list (this was years before Marvel joined the Disney family). Spider-Man is a great fit for us – he isn’t perfect, has every day problems, has challenges juggling school and being a super hero. And he’s funny – in the comics, Spidey has always been the wise-cracking wall-crawler, and in the new series we explore that in new ways – breaking the fourth wall, fantasy sequences and multiple character styles.
One of the newest animated series to be added to the Disney XD slate is Randy Cunningham: 9th Grade Ninja, set for a fall 2012 debut. We learned a little about the series at the recent Disney upfront. What else can you tell us?
It’s hilarious! A great mix of comedy and action. We are very excited to bring this series to Disney XD. This production has been a global initiative, led by our London team working with talent in L.A. and Dublin. One of the funniest bits is the made-up slang the two main characters, Randy and Howard, use with each other’s catchphrases just aching to be repeated at school.
Disney XD also features live-action series. What kinds of shows are you looking for?
Character-driven comedies with aspirational male leads. Situations that are new and unexpected. A great example is our newest series “Lab Rats” which premiered as our highest premiere ever. It’s a blended family sitcom that follows a teenage Leo and his three new siblings – who are bionic super heroes in training. “Lab Rats” is a fun mix of action, humor and relatable storylines.
You are an attorney. How did you get into entertainment and how did you make the shift from the legal end of the business to become a channel programmer and general manager?
I went to law school thinking I would be a prosecutor. Once I graduated, there were very limited slots available, and I got very lucky with an in-house position at Marvel Comics. Within a few months at Marvel, I was offered to come talk about an open prosecutor position, but by that point I was very happy – I had Spider-Man on my business card, free comics every week and action figures lining my office walls – no way was I giving that up! At Marvel, I gained a lot of experience in the licensing industry, which led me to jobs at licensing companies that also had television distribution divisions – opening up the international television world. I had moved into a business affairs and development role, during which I made contacts at Disney trying to sell a show (which went instead to PBS). When the time came for a new challenge, Disney recruited me for a programming role. I’ve now been with Disney for eight years, in the role of GM for one year and it’s been an incredible ride so far.
Were you a comic book kid? Do you remember the first comic book you bought and do you still have it?
I was a huge comic book kid. My mother bought me my first comic book – Invaders #31. Thus started my love of super hero teams. I still have it, and about 10,000 others, in my parent’s attic.
One of the new Marvel shorts is designed to help fans learn to draw a character. Must Marvel characters hit the gym to stay in shape or is it all genetics? Can you draw at all?
It probably depends on the hero, but I’m pretty sure they all need to hit the gym at one point or another. I’m a fairly decent doodler, and am pretty good at drawing super hero logos when I’m bored. I can also do that thing with two faces that can also be a vase.
I understand that you actually don’t mind airplane food. In your travels around the world for work, you’ve eaten quite a number of airplane meals. What’s your favorite and do you have any tricks/suggestions to getting the best the airlines have to offer in the way of food?
I’ve had some good steaks on Virgin Airlines, one of my favorite airlines – I love the Heathrow Clubhouse and the clever packaging and accoutrements. Tricks/suggestions the best way to get anything on an airplane is to be nice to the attendants. A smile goes a long way.
