Cynopsis: DIGITAL

03/21/11

Good morning, it’s Monday, March 21, 2011, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.  If you would like to read this or any other Cynopsis edition online, click here

After T-Mobile had conducted merger talks with Sprint, the Deutsche Telekom AG division has agreed to be acquired by AT&T in a blockbuster deal worth $39 billion. The merger commits AT&T to a dramatic expansion of its 4G LTE (Long Term Evolution) network, a technology also being used by Verizon, adding coverage to another 46.5 million U.S. customers beyond initial plans. (AT&T notes that the additional footprint includes rural communities, a stated goal of the Obama administration, in a bid to make the deal sound attractive to regulators.) If approved, AT&T would become the dominant wireless carrier in the U.S. with 127 million subscribers, compared to 94 million for Verizon. Sprint-Nextel, which currently has around 50 million subs, would remain the odd man out, depending on the underfunded Clearwire venture to build out its WiMax 4G network.

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

CBS Sports and Turner Sports’ new arrangement to broadcast every NCAA Tournament game on broadcast and cable for the first time has delivered the best overall tournament-to-date average ratings in the metered markets in 20 years. But the increased exposure hasn’t taken any of the thunder away from the companies’ NCAA March Madness On Demand product, at least on the crucial workday of Thur. The platform experienced a 22% increase is total visits (7.6 million) on Thur. across broadband and mobile apps (4.1 uniques online, 774k uniques on mobile). There were 3.3 million total hours of live streaming video consumed across both platforms.

News Corp.
is planning to launch its own social gaming business in the vein of Zynga according to comments made last week by head of digital Jonathan Miller, reports Reuters. The company would be built upon its Making Fun and IGN subsidiaries rather than on MySpace, which News Corp. is reportedly shopping. Miller also noted that the company’ mobile news app The Daily has attracted “hundreds of thousands” of users who are averaging 45 minutes/session reading its content. The Daily faces a reality check today which it begins to charge users $1/week for continued use.

Netflix
officially consummated its deal with Media Rights Capital to produce the 26-episode political drama “House of Cards,” executive produced and directed by David Fincher and starring Kevin Spacey. The drama will premiere exclusively on Netflix’s “Watch Instantly” streaming internet service from late next year.

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

Comcast’s Social TV fan site Tunerfish has introduced “fanning” and “liking” to its profile pages. When you see that a friend is watching a show or movie you fancy you can comment by clicking on a Facebook-inspired “like” button, one of several updates to its social stream interface. The changes are available now on the web and will be coming soon to Tunerfish’s iPhone and Android apps.

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

Publicis Groupe’s Starcom MediaVest has wrestled away Microsoft‘s global media strategy and planning business from Universal McCann and will be in charge of buying ad space in North America, an account worth over $1 billion in billings. The Interpublic agency will continue to manage media planning and buying outside of North America.

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

Germany’s federal cartel office quashed the plans of broadcasters RTL Group and ProSieben to form a Hulu-style online video TV platform, complaining that such a venture would only increase the companies’ dominance of the local TV advertising market. (The BBC, Channel 4, Five and two telecom companies are working on similar venture in the UK dubbed “Canvas.”) The German broadcasters hatched their plan in August as a way build up a vibrant market for online TV advertising. Both are expected to appeal the ruling.

The Japanese earthquake, tsunami and nuclear energy woes are expected to significantly disrupt the supply chain of a growing number of electronics than run on sophisticated microprocessors, including Apple‘s iPad 2. Electronic original equipment manufacturers worldwide could resort to panic buying of semiconductors and electronic components, warned a IHS iSuppli report. There are a total of 130 production semiconductor fabrication lines located in 53 locations in Japan.

Netflix
is being sued for its practice of holding on to subscriber information to improve its algorithm long after they defect from the service. The lawsuit, seeking $2,500 or $3,000 per violation, claims the company is violating the 1980’s era Video Privacy Protection Act, enacted after the press got a hold of Supreme Court nominee Robert Bork’s rental video history.

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

E-books and downloadable audio books continue to expand sales with E-book net sales increasing by 115.8% vs Jan. 2010 to $69.9 million and sales of Downloadable Audio Books increasing by 8.8% y/y $6.5 million, according to the January 2011 sales report of the Association of American Publishers. Total books sales on all platforms, in all categories, hit $805.7 Million for January, a slight drop from the Jan. 2010 mark $821.5 million.

The selection my be better at the iPhone/iPad App store, but Apple’s new Mac App Store’s apps are generating plenty of revenue. Less than two months after the launch of Apple’s Mac App Store, a top 300 Mac application already generates half the revenue of a top 300 iPad application on average, according to app data tracker Distimo. The ave. selling price of the top 300 apps is seven times higher in the Mac App Store ($11.21) than on the iPhone ($1.57) and almost three times higher than on the iPad ($4.19). The Mac App Store already has 2,225+ apps available in the store, compared to the 8,099 apps available for the iPad two months post-launch.

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

Two inventive hackers at the University of Konstanz in Germany have come up with yet another cool application for Microsoft‘s Kinect controller, reports engadget. The system, strapped to a helmet worn by a blind person, powers NAVI – navigational aids for the visually impaired – providing 3D imagery to a software system that interprets oncoming obstacles and gives voice commands such as “turn left” to the user.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Former Editorial Director and GM of Movieline.com Charles Runnette begins his newly created job today at MTV Networks’ Logo as Editorial Director of all 7 of the division’s websites, including Logotv.com, 365gay.com, nextnownext.com, tripoutgaytravel.com and afterelton.com.

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

Online peer-to-peer video streaming service BitTorrent is partnering with Paramount Pictures to release fake documentary horror movie The Tunnel  for free online on May 19 – the day it goes on sale as a straight-to-DVD release, reports Torrent Freak. The Australian project is being financed by selling merchandise and getting individual users/investors to pay $1 via PayPal for an individual “digital frame” of the movie. (The investment ostensibly buys you a 1% share of any profits generated by the movie, but good luck collecting – the producers are selling 135k shares, promising that each share is worth 1%.) The deal sounds fishy but the movie sounds like it might be fun – it takes place in the hidden tunnels that run underneath Sydney, claiming to be comprised of documentary footage exploring a government cover-up involving the tunnels. BitTorrent, which has been working hard to clean up its image and build legit partnerships with mainstream media companies, is a perfect partners for such a venture; the site boasts over 100 million active monthly users and over 400k average daily client downloads.
