Cynopsis: Kids!
06/04/12

Good morning. It’s Monday, June 4, 2012, and this your first early morning briefing.

Answering a few of our questions this week is outdoorsman, explorer and field scientist, Richard Wiese. Richard is host of Born to Explore with Richard Wiese, which airs as part of Litton’s Weekend Adventure (http://www.litton.tv/shows/wa.html), a new 3-hour syndicated Saturday morning programming block that airs on 95% of ABC affiliates, and we are very excited that Richard will be our keynote presenter at the Cynopsis Kids !magination Awards breakfast this Thursday, June 7, in NYC (http://www.cynopsis.com/events/kids-awards). Richard has traveled to all seven continents. When he was just 11-years-old he climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro with his father, also a noted outdoorsmen and explorer. Since then Richard has led more than a dozen expeditions up and down that mountain and he discovered 29 new life forms there. In 2002, Richard became the youngest President of The Explorers Club in its one hundred-year history. He has tagged jaguars in the Yucatan jungles, led expeditions to the Northern Territory of Australia, was a member of the largest medical expedition ever conducted on Mt. Everest, and he made the first ascent of an unclimbed mountain in Alaska. Richard is also the registered Climbing Guide for teens at The Museum of Natural History.

You climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro with your father when you were 11 years old. As a child were you aware that you were having different experiences than those of the average kid?

I think that I, like most kids, viewed the way I grew up as normal. It was not unusual for me to travel internationally as a child because my father was a captain for Pan American Airways. I remember in college, since I could travel for free, taking Pan Am flight 1 around the world over a three-day weekend. I was always up for an adventure. When I look back now, what I realize is how lucky I was to have two really great loving and supportive parents. I still talk with them almost every day.

Did you ever tell your dad  “Nah, I don’t feel like hiking today” or whatever the activity was? How did he react?

Quite the contrary – my father would occasionally dock me from outdoor or sports time for not completing my chores. A typical summer day would be my mother shouting out the door what time to be home for dinner and I would be off out into the woods or heading down to the local shore.

You are very involved in getting kids excited about science, animals and the environment. What have you found to be the best way to do that?

I think the secret to getting kids excited about the outdoors is to be excited yourself. There are so many interesting things literally outside your front door that people never notice. For example, when I look at the rings around a tree stump, that’s a history book to me. When I see clouds in the sky, I see a story unfolding about what’s going to happen tomorrow. Or when I see a big limestone building I look for fossils. I also think letting kids take ownership of quirky projects is another way to get them excited. It’s all a function of how imaginative you want to be.

How did you get involved in with your new show, Born to Explore, and what are your goals for the show? How did you decide what the show was going to be about when you sat down the development team?

I have always wanted my own adventure TV show (like everyone else in TV). Originally, Born to Explore was going to be a bit more rugged. But after sitting with Dave Morgan, the creator of Litton’s Weekend Adventure, and realizing his overall vision for the block of programming, we decided that the show should be more holistic in terms of showing animals, adventure and culture in relation to each other. I think the biggest revelation we have had is how interesting the stories of individuals around the world are. Our show is still evolving.

What is the single most important thing you hope kids take away from watching even a single episode?

Our goal is to get kids to realize that there is a big and exciting world out there, that we should embrace other cultures around the world and not be afraid. Our small team at Born to Explore is very proud that we’re showing the world in a very positive and authentic way. I think that we’re proving that the best reality show is happening in villages and wildlife sanctuaries all around the world. We are honored to end our first season with the recognition of our peers with a Daytime Emmy nomination.

Are there plans for Born to Explore apps or other digital educational extensions of your series?

I have spoken to Dave Morgan and the Litton team about this and we are very excited about extending the brand of Born to Explore. We would love to partner with some like-minded individuals and really make a difference.

You have discovered and co-discovered hundreds of previously unknown life forms (202 of which were in Central Park in NYC, which I have to say scares me somehow). Does that mean plants or animals that scientists truly didn’t know about?

I grew up with the notion that we had nine planets and that life existed in a narrow range of somewhere above freezing and below boiling. We now realize that there are infinite planets out there (with the exception of Pluto) and that life is more robust. It’s estimated that there are at least 100 million forms of life on earth and that we have only catalogued a little over one million of them.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the iconic Berenstain Bears. Nelvana Enterprises is currently in discussions with potential licensing and retail partners on opportunities to celebrate this milestone. Nelvana produced 40 episodes of an animated TV series based on the Berenstain Bears. The Bears have been featured in a musical, amusement park rides, toys, e-books, apps and even a video game, and there is also a feature film in development. The initial title The Big Honey Hunt was published in 1962 by creators Jan and Stan Berenstain, under the editorship of the legendary Dr. Seuss. To date, 300+ Berenstain Bears books have been written and 250+ million copies sold. Random House Children’s Books and HarperCollins Children’s Books continue to publish new books in the series, and are working together to mark the 50th anniversary. In July, Random House Children’s Books will re-issue a special anniversary edition of The Big Honey Hunt as well as The Berenstain Bears: All in the Family, a grouping of six titles. HarperCollins will publish 19 new titles this year, including Nothing Ever Happens at the South Pole, which will release in August 2012, and The Berenstain Bears’ Old-Fashioned Christmas, releasing in September.
