Good morning. It’s Monday, June 24, 2013, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

Back during Nickelodeon‘s upfront, the network announced that it was planning to partner with YouTube channel AwesomenessTV to launch a new sketch comedy TV show. That TV show, which will be called AwesomenessTV, now has a start date (July 1). Hosted by Daniella Monet (Victorious), the sketch comedy series will air for 13 weeks every Monday night. AwesomenessTV recently launched a multichannel network on YouTube, allowing indie content creators to join the network and have access to its audience development, distribution, and monetization resources. Now, AwesomenessTV has launched a contest that will give one of its network stars the chance to appear on the TV show via a video they produced and submitted.

NEW PROGRAMMING + DEALS

Revision3 plans to launch a new show based on viral cat sensation Lil BUB later this summer (August, to be exact). “Anyone who uses the internet knows that cats are kind of a big deal online,” said Ryan Vance, SVP/Programming and Development at Revision3, in a blog post. “It’s my pleasure to welcome Lil BUB to the Revision3 family and to announce a new show we’re working on with her and her owner Mike Bridavsky.” Vance is not kidding: the cat is actually kind of a big deal online. Vice has already produced a documentary about her and she (and Bridavsky) have a book coming out this fall. Speaking about this planned show, Vance said it will be unlike anything “the internet has ever seen. It will be unique as BUB herself, and allow her to showcase her many skills, mostly her people skills.”

CONTENT EVERYWHERE

I’m told by an HBO spokesperson that DirecTV is now authenticating HBO GO on Apple TV. HBO Go arrived on Apple TV just last week, alongside other TV Everywhere/video apps like WatchESPN, Sky News, Crunchyroll, and Qello.

ADVERTISING

YouTube has launched a partner program for advertisers. The video company will offer top advertisers the resources and tools necessary to create shareable video content. Essentially, it’s a way for YouTube to encourage advertisers to create custom video ads and not run re-purposed TV spots on the video site. Announced late last week at Cannes Lions, the pilot program will begin this September with the participation of American Express, General Electric, PepsiCo, and Johnson & Johnson. Each advertiser (and their agencies) will have access to their own content partner manager to help them develop content and audience development strategies. YouTube plans to expand the program to 100 advertisers by the end of next year.

Centro’s Brand Exchange product has been certified by Trust Metrics, a provider of third-party digital measurement standards for publishers, with one of its highest ratings. Per Trust Metrics, 95% of publisher sites on the Centro Brand Exchange are “ideal,” meaning that they offer high-quality, brand-safe content with low ad clutter. Beyond just the Trust Metrics certification, Centro also announced that its Brand Exchange now offers mobile and tablet web inventory, and that it has also opened up access to the top agency trading desks and DSPs. The Centro Brand Exchange was created to give advertisers access to secondary impressions from national and regional news sites including those from publishers like Tribune, Scripps, Hearst, ABC, CBS, and McClatchy, among 1,500 others.

RESEARCH NEWS

Ooyala, an online video start-up that offers video publishing, analytics, and monetization solutions, released its Q1 2013 Global Video Indexreport, which continues the theory (I guess it’s actually more of a fact) that more people are watching content across more screens. The findings are based on the anonymized viewing habits of nearly 200 million unique viewers in 130 countries every month. Here’s what the Index uncovered:

  • Share of tablet and mobile viewing grew 19%
  • Mobile and tablet video now account for more than 10% of all online video plays; this is the highest percentage since Ooyala began tracking this data and is more than double the 4% share that mobile and tablet accounted for in Q1 2012.
  • Mobile and tablet video viewers spent more than half of their total online viewing time watching long-form videos (10+ minutes) in Q1.
  • In fact, Q1 was the first quarter in which mobile (53%) and tablets (52%) beat desktop PCs (38%) in percentage of time spent viewing watching long-form video content.
  • 25% of total tablet-viewing time during Q1 2013 was spent on content that was longer than 60 minutes.
  • Viewers watched live video 13 times longer than on-demand content on desktops in Q1; four times longer on tablets; and three times longer on mobile devices (on this last point, this probably has to do with the fact that most live videos are longer than most on-demand clips).

Online ads are still behind more traditional forms of advertising (television, magazines, and in-store displays) when it comes to influencing consumers to buy beauty products, according to a new infographic from Videology. Per Videology, which asked consumers which forms of advertising most influence their decision to buy a new beauty/grooming product, 25% of respondents picked TV, 22% picked magazines, 17% picked in-store displays, and 9% picked online.

MOBILE GAMING + APPS

Zeebox now has the ability to automatically identify what users are watching on TV via its new audio-fingerprinting capabilities. According to Engadget, this functionality comes by way of a deal with Gracenote that Zeebox announced in January.

For the DVD and Blu-ray release of Relativity Media’s 21 & Over, Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment teamed up with LA-based digital agency AvatarLabs to launch PartyLikeIts21.com. The website hosts fan-created Vine videos (tagged with #partylikeits21 and #21andover), which are visualized via an ever-changing mosaic of rotating user-generated content set to the soundtrack of the film. The mosaic also supports an endless scroll as well as a “Featured Vines” section. For the site, AvatarLabs created a custom CMS that discovers tagged with the aforementioned two hashtags and allows a content manager to quickly approve which ones appear on the mosaic.

A new app comes from developer/tycoon George Maharis: Fakeblock, which allows iOS and Android users to impress friends and family with life-like wood percussion sounds. Also, if you tap the instrument a certain amount of times, you will be able to unlock content from “Arrested Development,” which recently premiered its fourth season on Netflix.

EXEC MOVES

Serge Matta has been appointed by comScore as its new President. He will report to the digital measurement company’s Co-Founder and CEO Magid Abraham. Most recently, Matta was President/Commercial Solutions for comScore, where he was responsible for the company’s global sales organization.
