Greetings! It’s Monday, June 11, 2007 and this is your second Cynopsis Special Edition, taking a look back at the Year 1999.
1999 was a confrontational year … morning news programs do battle, Dave Smith wants syndicators to bid for Sinclair time periods, Jamie Kellner tells the Family Forum to put up or shut up and they did, TNT bought Law & Order out from under A&E, and Gary Coleman slugged a fan.
Repurposing was truly discovered with shows running first on broadcast and within days airing on cable. Another definition of repurposing was introduced – taking a 60m show and cutting it down to air as a 30m show later on in the week. The latter … didn’t work nearly as well.
It was a year of milestones – Nickelodeon and ESPN both turned 20; HBO adds The Sopranos; ABC debuts Millionaire; 7th Heaven is the first WB program to show up in the Top; Another World ends as does Susan Lucci’s Emmy draught, and that giant sucking sound you heard was Viacom.
So here’s the quick recap … a look back to 1999:
THE NETWORKS:
Charlie Gibson and Diane Sawyer sign back on for Good Morning America
Debbie Matenopoulos loses her View, Lisa Ling gets it
HBO introduces New Jersey’s favorite family … The Sopranos
Richard Guillaume suffers a stroke on the set of Sports Night and manages to return in time for the season finale
All in the Family is inducted into the NAB’s Hall of Fame
NOGGIN is born
With the birth of the twins, 7th Heaven becomes the first WB series to break into the Top 50 Primetime shows of the week
Barbara Walters wins the first interview Monica Lewinsky and earns a 33.4/48 HH rating
Columbia Tristar asks UPN for a guarantee it won’t go out of business before they’ve had the chance to recoup expenses
NBC’s Another World ends its long daytime run and Passion begins
Melrose Place, Home Improvement and Mad about You all come to an end
David E. Kelley re-purposes Ally McBeal into a 30m series … interesting idea, but not a great response
Susan Lucci wins the Emmy … finally!
Nickelodeon turns 20
Regis Philbin hosts new primetime game show – Who Wants to be a Millionaire? – and Is that Your Final Answer? enters the popular vernacular
TV Land buys the original set of The Honeymooners at auction
