Google stock is flying high, approaching $620/share on Friday and closing in on a market capitalization of $200 billion. The company reported a record $9.03 billion in Q2 earnings last week as its freshly launched Google+ social networking site surpassed 20 million users just three weeks after launching, according to ComScore estimates. While it still has a long way to go catch Facebook’s 750 million user audience, Google+ is pretty much the fastest growing site of its kind to date, even before adding social games and other apps that helped Facebook grow its footprint immensely. Users are responding in particular to its Circles feature, which allows you to group contacts and easily limit your posts to a select few. Google internal data shows that users are two to three times more likely to share content within one of their Circles than to make a general post, according to a San Jose Mercury News profile.
 

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

 
A new bidder has emerged for online content portal Hulu, while another has dropped out of the running. Cash-rich Apple, which just paid $2.6 billion for a slew of Nortel Networks patents, is reportedly interested in acquiring the joint venture, according to a Bloomberg report. So far, Apple’s iTunes store has focused on a la carte sales rather that subscription schemes and its Apple TV “hobby” has not crossed over into the mainstream. But adding Hulu’s licenses could position it to directly compete with Netflix. Meanwhile, Microsoft is said to be rethinking its interest in the online video service after reports circulated that Yahoo is willing to pay as much as $2 billion for the site.
 
CNN launched a new live video streaming service available online and via iPhone and iPad to some 50 million customers of some of the nation’s largest ISPs including AT&T, Comcast, Cox, Dish Network, Suddenlink and Verizon. CNN.com, which has also introduced an upgraded video player sponsored by Dell, will include multiple live streams of breaking news and events in addition to simulcast streams of CNN and HLN.
 
A new video streaming deal has been struck between Amazon and CBS Corp. that will add some 2,000 older TV show episodes to the Amazon Prime streaming service later this summer (available to those who pay for the $79 free shipping upgrade.) CBS is the one major network that doesn’t provide content to Hulu Plus. The Tudors, Numb3rs, Medium and the original Star Trek are among the available shows.
 
Charter has flipped the switch on the HBO Go and Max Go premium TV Everywhere services available to HBO or Cinemax subscribers online or via iPhone, iPad or Android devices, making Time Warner Cable and Cablevision the last major MSO holdouts.
 
The New York Times counted 224k digital subscribers who are paying to get past its easy-to-breach paywall at the end of June. (This is in addition to the 765,000 subscribers who have taken advantage of the digital access that comes with their home-delivery subscriptions.) Multiplatform subscriptions are priced at between $15-$35/month for unlimited access.
 

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

 
Acorn Media Group has launched Acorn TV, a new paid streaming service featuring a handful of popular British TV shows such as Upstairs Downstairs, Brideshead Revisited and Agatha Christie’s Poirot. A free trial of the service is being offered through Aug. 31.
 
Social marketing platform Vitrue has acquired GamesThatGive for an undisclosed amount, a San Francisco-based gaming platform that allows sponsors to co-brand games whose revenues are given to popular charities including UNICEF, Ronald McDonald House Charities, and Habitat for Humanity.
 

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

 
The IAB introduced the results of a new survey of 300 marketing execs that illustrates a rapid rise in mobile budgets across the advertising landscape, with 63% of top-level brand marketing executives polled saying their mobile advertising spend has increased over the past two years and 29% reporting an increase of over 50%. Marketers ranked Smartphones as their highest priority in mobile ad campaigns (60%), followed by Tablets (31%), Feature phones (22%), Ebooks (10%) and Connected games consoles (3%). Device fragmentation, privacy issues and a lack of standardized metrics were cited by a majority of respondents as the key challenges to the space.
 

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

 
Following the launch of an antitrust investigation into its business practices, Google had decided to drop excerpts of customer reviews from consumer rating sites such as Yelp, UrbanSpoon and TripAdvisor from its Google Places service, according to the company’s official blog. Instead, Google has added a feature to allow users write their own reviews on the local ratings and review service.
 
Verizon has signed up its share of iPhone customers since signing a distribution deal with Apple, adding 2.3 million iPhone subscribers during Q2. But AT&T is still attracting more iPhone customers – activating 3.6 million new customers (24% new to AT&T) on its network during the same period. Smartphones lifted the fortunes of both companies during the quarter. AT&T reported its best-ever second-quarter smartphone sales of 5.6 million; nearly 70% of total postpaid sales were smartphones. Verizon said 36% of its postpaid subscriber base is now uses smartphones, up from 32% a year ago. The company sold 1.2 million 4G LTE smartphones and data devices during the quarter.
 
Dish Network revealed it would keep more than 1,500 Blockbuster stores open out of the approximately 1,700 it took over in its acquisition of the ailing video rental chain.
 

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

 
Total viewing sessions surpassed the 6 billion mark for the first time in ComScore‘s monthly video rankings, with YouTube generating the highest number of viewing sessions (2.3 billion) and highest time spent per viewer (324 minutes, or 5.4 hours). Amazon moved up in the rankings while Facebook continued to fall.

Apple
reported selling over one million downloads of its new OS X Lion release the day after it went on sale. The transitional upgrade, available for $30 to users who are running the Snow Leopard OS, includes features such as “Lanchpad” and “Mission Control,” inspired by the touchpad interface of iOS.
 
CNN
announced that more than 10 million consumers have downloaded CNN Apps globally on iPhone and iPad; Android tablets and phones; and Nokia devices.
 
E! Entertainment Television extended its Red Carpet App to Windows Phone and Slate devices just in time for the Emmys. The app features exclusive live video streams of the “Who’s Next” camera from the red carpet.

Verizon Wireless has elevated Lowell McAdam to the position of CEO, replacing Ivan Seidenberg, who will remain as Chairman.
 
Redbox
President Mitch Lowe resigned unexpectedly from the company’s parent company Coinstar last week after the company reported disappointing Q2 earnings.
 
BBC Worldwide Americas tapped Claudia Milne as Editor of BBC.com/newsNorth America edition. She reports to James Montgomery, Controller of Digital and Technology for BBC Global News.
 
FishBowl Worldwide Media has hired former Disney/ABC Television Group Digital Studio VP David Beebe as VP and GM, Digital Studio, a new position. David reports to FishBowl President and CEO Bruce Gersh.
 
Dailymotion has named Joe Tartaglia as SVP/Sales to lead all ad sales and agency relations, reporting directly to Dailymotion’s head of US operations, Managing Director Roland Hamilton.
 
Vitrue has added Chris Hackney as VP/Strategic Alliances, a newly created position. He will report in Atlanta directly to Vitrue CEO & Founder Reggie Bradford.

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

 
I decided to power through all the Harry Potter movies during my week off, which led me to take Blockbuster up on its free 30-day trial of its Total Access plan (available to current Netflix customers), renting 1 DVD at a time for $10/mo. or 2 DVDs at a time for $15/mo. Netflix didn’t have them and Comcast wanted $4 piece on demand and $6 for the newest release. The lure of the plan was the ability to rent a Blu-ray (at no extra charge,) then go into a local chain store to swap it out for the next movie in your queue, without having to wait for the mailer. What they don’t tell you is that you can only do this when you receive the disc from the postman; in store swapping is not allowed. Also, the website’s interface pales in comparison to Netflix – no recommendation engine, far too few categories and clunky navigation. What’s worse is that the website doesn’t interface well with the stores’ computer database. Despite promises from the clerk, movies I had already rented at the local store showed up in my mailbox. What a lost opportunity here – time for Blockbuster’s new owner, Dish Network, to go back to the drawing board.
