MobiTV, a provider of mobile video services that deliver live and on-demand television and other video content to smartphones and other connected mobile devices, has withdrawn its plans for an initial public offering. The company cites “unfavorable market conditions” in its letter to the Securities and Exchange Commission as the reason for pulling the IPO, which it originally filed last year looking to raise up to $75 million. Founded in 2000, MobiTV is the “exclusive national provider of mobile television services” for the likes of AT&T U-verse TV, NFL Mobile on Verizon, Sprint TV, and T-Mobile TV, according to its CrunchBase profile. The company licenses content from an array of networks and television companies. It says MobiTV-powered products are available on over 375 different types of mobile devices, across all wireless carriers and different operating systems in the US. In 2011, the company streamed 1.6 billion minutes of video to mobile devices and aired over 3,200 live events.

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

Late last week Barry Diller told Bloomberg Television that Aereo plans to expand from New York to several other major US cities. “We’re going to really start marketing,” Diller said in the interview. “Within a year and a half, certainly by [2013], we’ll be in most major markets.” This decision comes after the online television streaming service’s recent (and temporary) victory in court, which allowed it to continue to operate as it faces off against lawsuits from multiple television networks.

Univision is implementing a multiplatform audience engagement campaign for the upcoming “Premios Juventud” youth awards show, which will air live on the network on July 19 from 7pm to 11pm ET. Twitter is going to be a big aspect of the campaign: Starting today, fans can tweet in questions (accompanied by #PJPregunta) they want to see celebrities answer on the red carpet. On the night of the show, beginning at 7pm ET, fans can tap Twitter again to select who they think is best dressed (using #MejorVestido); results will be tallied on screen. Staying on the fashion front, Univision’s Rodner Figueroa will select his own six candidates for best dressed, whom fans will be able to vote on (via Twitter and #MejorVestido again) during the main broadcast. Univision will also encourage fans to take pictures of their own viewing parties and share them using the #PJFoto hashtag; the network will select some of the pictures and show them during the broadcast. The network is also planning to show celebrity tweets during the broadcast as well as host live Twitter chats (via @premiosjuventud) with performing artists during rehearsals this week. Moving away from Twitter, other components of the campaign include:

  • Univision is also planning to run a live stream of the backstage area during the broadcast on PremiosJuvetud.com.
  • Users can vote online on the show’s website and via the Univision app for their favorite nominees.
  • PremiosJuventud.com and the Univision app are populated with videos and photos from previous years’ awards shows.
  • “Estado de celebracion” is a new feature that allows users to mix their own Facebook videos and photos with footage from last year’s show in order to create custom video reels.

Steven Faktor, an author based out of NY, is suing Yahoo and the non-profit organization Score, reports MediaPost. He is claiming that Yahoo and Score stole his idea for Remake America, a reality series on the web that follows six American families during this election season. Faktor says that in late 2011 he pitched an idea to Score for a social-driven web series to help small businesses in the US. He does not make any mention of having met or discussed the idea with Yahoo; but since the media company partnered with Score to develop and produce Remake America, Yahoo could still be liable for misappropriation, according to the report.

The Cynopsis Sports Media Awards Breakfast takes place on August 9 in New York City. If you haven’t seen the finalists and registered to attend yet, you can do so here.

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

Microsoft Advertising’s recent round of layoffs indicate that the company may be moving away from its mobile advertising and branded web video advertising businesses, according to Adweek. The company laid off all but one employee within its mobile advertising team and significantly slashed positions within its Global Creative Solutions team; those who survived the cuts in this unit will be redirected to promoting Windows 8 to mobile app developers, several sources tell Adweek. Overall, this could mean that Microsoft Advertising has its sights set on automated ad selling, rather than “selling advertising to brands using human beings,” says the report.

Facebook is allowing SocialCode to offer premium ad placements on the social network to its clients. This makes the social media advertising firm, which is owned by The Washington Post Company, one of Facebook’s first official API partners to get such a clearance. SocialCode says it will now be able to apply its targeting tools to premium placements (the ads on the right side of the homepage); something which should improve brands’ Facebook ad buys. To illustrate how this new capability will be a benefit to its clients, SocialCode says that a recent marketplace placement for a campaign promoting a client’s Facebook app resulted in a conversion rate of 1.2%. When the client bought premium ads a month into the campaign, the conversion rates for those marketplace ads jumped to an average of 3.0%.

Digital distribution company Syndicado has expanded its existing distribution partnership with NJ-based Lifesize Entertainment. Syndicado says the deal brings a number of new titles into its catalog, consisting of award-winning narrative films and international documentaries. “With this exclusive partnership, Syndicado now includes major film festival award winners and Oscar’s Best Foreign Film category entries,” said Greg Rubidge, President of the company. Syndicado manages multiple aspects of the digital distribution process, including strategy and marketing, as it delivers its clients’ content to web video, VOD, and mobile video outlets in North America.

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC. ~

Dyle Mobile TV, a live mobile broadcast service from the Mobile Content Venture (MCV), commissioned a survey of US consumers on the topic of live television on mobile devices. The results show that 68% of respondents indicated they would watch more television if they were able to watch it live on mobile devices while on the go. The allure of television on mobile devices is also capable of affecting the wireless market, as the study indicates that 61% of US consumers would be somewhat or very likely to switch cellphone providers in order to get mobile TV. MCV is a joint venture consisting of 12 major broadcast groups. Here is some other relevant data from the study:

  • The types of programming respondents said they would most anticipate if accessing it via a live mobile TV service are: Local news and weather (81%), movies (79%), national news (75%), sitcoms (69%), sports (66%), children’s cartoons (65%), drama (64%), and reality shows (53%).
  • The top mobile television use cases among respondents include: For killing time while waiting (85%), for entertainment while traveling (76%), entertaining the kids in the car (74%), as an additional TV inside the home (63%), staying connected at sporting events (53%), at the gym (52%), and apparently “sneaking some TV time at work” (44%).

86% of US smartphone users would prefer fast video starts and seamless streaming in standard definition at the expense of HD-quality video resolution when dealing with a poor connection, according to new poll data commissioned by Skyfire and conducted by Harris Interactive. Based on a May/June survey of over 900 American and over 1,000 British smartphone owners, the study also reports that 57% of US smartphone owners have watched a video on their mobile device last month. Other findings include:

  • 18-34 year-old US smartphone owners are most likely to indicate that they have watched mobile video in the last month (76%). This demographic is followed by those aged 35-44 (58%), 45-54 (52%), and 55+ (24%). This means the youngest generation surveyed is as likely to watch a mobile video as the oldest generation is not.
  • Men in the US are significantly more likely than women to have watched a video on their smartphone in the past month (62% vs. 52%).
  • Combining the two, the report finds that 84% of young males between the ages of 18 and 34 watched a video on their smartphone in the past month.
  • Perhaps the most eyebrow-raising finding: 66% of respondents from US households with an income under $35,000 watched a video on their smartphone in the past month; that number is lower (54%) among those from households with an income above $75,000.

Adam Ostrow has been promoted to Chief Strategy Officer at Mashable. In the new role, Ostrow says he will continue to drive Mashable’s content strategy, including video, but now will also be responsible for defining and executing strategy across the organization, including editorial, sales, business development, and community.

Chris Fetner has been named Director/Content Partner Operations at Netflix, and will work out of the company’s Beverly Hills office. A newly created position, Fenter will manage all aspects of the digital supply chain with Netflix’s content partner at the position. Prior to this, Fetner oversaw BBC’s post-production operations in the US.

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

The Wirecutter is not another tech or gadget blog. It wants you to know that as more than anything else, the website is simply a list of great technology compiled by Editor Brian Lam. And it’s also not a rundown of the sleekest, niftiest, and flashiest gadgets around. “Most of the ones we’ve picked are of the ‘good enough’ or ‘great enough’ variety, because this is generally where our needs and the right prices smash into each other,” explains Lam in a post describing the site. Check it out; it’s truly one of the best places on the web to find almost any type of gadget you might need — from regular stuff like TVs, smartphones, tablets, and other handheld devices and accessories, to gadgets and tools that you might not think about on a daily basis, like grills and binoculars. The Wirecutter is part of The Awl network of web publications.
