Dish Network is set to unveil a new broadband internet service and a multi-room DVR during its press conference later today at the 2012 CES, reports Multichannel News, which itself cites an original report from Dealerscope (it has since been taken down). The broadband internet service will be offered to 8 million customers in the U.S. who don’t have great (or any) access to cable or fiber-based broadband services. The new DVR, titled “The Hopper,” will be able to deliver video to multiple devices via a built-in Slingbox capability. Alongside “The Hopper” will be smaller set-top boxes that connect to the main device over the Multimedia over Coax Alliance (MoCA) specification. The DVR will also include a PrimeTime Anytime feature, which automatically records the primetime lineups of the four major broadcast networks for later viewing.

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

Coinciding with the House of Lies series premiere, Showtime has launched a new second-screen experience for the show via an interactive website and a multiplatform tablet app. The site will serve as the main hub for all digital content revolving around the show. Fans can connect to the website via Facebook or LinkedIn, and receive a personalized “consultation” with a character from the show in regards to their personal or professional lives. The tablet app is stylized to look like a sleek magazine and offers a “guide” on style, travel and business through the voice of Don Cheadle’s character in the show. The app will be available for the iPad, Android tablets, the Nook and the Kindle Fire, as well as via the website.

ActiveVideo Networks has announced the launch of the latest version of its CloudTV platform. The CloudTV H5, powered by HTML5, “enables service providers to create navigation interfaces, or any apps, and deploy them through any network or device” at a much faster rate, according to Jeff Miller, president and CEO of ActiveVideo Networks. The CloudTV platform is currently delivered to almost 10 million screens in the U.S. and abroad with Cablevision, Oceanic Time Warner and other cable operators. As an example of the platform’s operability and capabilities, ActiveVideo will demo voice-controlled navigation, which will be conducted via CloudTV H5 and Siri-supporting Apple devices, at the 2012 CES.

Akamai Technologies is set to preview a prototype for UltraViolet deployment according to Digital Entertainment Content Ecosystem’s (DECE) industry-standard specifications. If you recall, UltraViolet is Hollywood’s attempt to drive DVD and Blu-ray purchases by also offering digital downloads that come with the disc. The company’s 2012 CES presentation will demonstrate how Akamai’s video delivery platform will allow consumers to watch UltraViolet movies and TV shows that they have purchased. The solution is also designed to help expand the reach of UltraViolet services to retailers’ websites and streaming services such as Amazon Prime, Walmart’s Vudu or Best Buy’s CinemaNow.

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

Millennial Media, the second largest mobile ad company in the U.S., has filed papers for a $75 million initial public offering, which could value the company between $700 million and $1 billion. Millennial generated $69.1 million in revenue in the first nine months of 2011, which was more than double its revenue over the same time period in 2010 ($29.1 million). The company isn’t profitable as it lost $400,000 over the same nine month period in 2011. However, the net loss is smaller when compared to 2010 (loss of $5.4 million). To-date, the start-up has raised more than $65 million in funding.

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

The final piece of Facebook’s new Open Graph platform is close to being released, reports VentureBeat. After having already released the Ticker and Timeline, all that remains for Facebook is the full Actions experience. To that end, the company has been working to approve partners in order to launch the service. Users have received a small taste of what Actions will do via Facebook’s integration with apps and services such as Spotify and the Washington Post Social Reader. Essentially, it is real-time documentation of any activity performed by a user away from the social network (“Read,” “Watch” or “Listen,” rather than just “Like”). When Actions is fully launched, third-party developers will be able to create other definitions to accompany the ones already established (for example, a cooking site can develop “Cook”).

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

Alloy Digital, a creator and distributor of online video content for the 12-34 year-old demographic, has acquired Generate, a full-service studio and talent management company, and as a result will form a multiplatform media company. Possessing a management team consisting of executives from television, film, digital, advertising, production and talent management companies, Generate provides customized branded content developed entirely in-house from concept through production. Alloy Digital’s media and advertising network targeted towards young adults reaches more than 70 million consumers each month, good enough to be a top 10 video network, according to comScore. The company also owns the third-most subscribed to channel on YouTube, Smosh, which it also recently acquired.

As part of a potential exchange of assets Yahoo! is considering with Alibaba Holding Group and Softbank, the media company might be eyeing The Weather Channel and WebMD, reports Bloomberg. The Weather Channel is owned by Comcast, so for such a deal to take place, Alibaba would purchase the channel and then exchange it for the stake in itself that Yahoo! currently owns, according to the sources cited in the report. However, this list of desired assets was created before the hiring of new CEO Scott Thompson; it is unclear how the appointment will affect the prospects of this rumored exchange.

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC. ~

According to a new study from technology firm Arieso, iPhone 4S owners on average consume twice as much data as owners of the iPhone 4 or the iPad. When compared to those still using the iPhone 3G, the disparity is even wider as 4S owners use up three times as much data. The study also reveals that “extreme” users are not slowing down as 1% of all smartphone users now consume half of all downloaded data. The analysis from Arieso views this as a serious cause for concern. “The introduction of increasingly sophisticated devices, coupled with growing consumer demand, is creating unrelenting pressure on mobile networks,” says Dr. Michael Flanagan, CTO at Arieso. “The capacity crunch is a very real threat… and it looks set to only get harder in 2012.”

2011 U.S. mobile commerce sales increased 91.4% over 2010 to reach $6.7 billion, finds eMarketer. This strong growth will extend all the way to 2015, in which the report forecasts m-commerce sales to hit the $31 billion mark at a compound annual growth rate of 55% from 2010 to 2015. The reason for this surge, according to eMarketer, is the growth in smartphone users (in 2011, the percentage of mobile shoppers who were also smartphone owners was 93%, up from 75% in 2010), as well as consumers getting more accustomed to mobile shopping and an ever-increasing number of retailers launching mobile sites and applications.

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

Google has announced a list of Google TV partners for the coming year. At the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this week, LG, Samsung, Sony, Vizio, Marvell and MediaTek each will unveil new versions of the connected TVs. Of note, LG’s Google TVs will run on its own L9 chipset, while Sony will introduce the devices for the US at the CES, with plans to unveil offerings for a global market later on in the year. In October of last year, Google launched the Google TV 2.0 update, which featured a simpler interface, a new way to browse for content, revamped YouTube offering and the Android Market. The connected device currently offers over 150 apps specifically designed for the TV, with thousands more available via the Android Market.

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

Voxer is a walkie-talkie app for smartphones and, due to personal experience with the application over this past weekend, a very clutch thing to have by your side if you happen to be driving. The free app is designed very similar to the regular SMS interface; it uses a bubble-based conversational approach, however instead of texts, they are audio clips. And you don’t need to be in a Wi-Fi network as the app is compatible over 3G as well. Other features include an all-in-one messaging system, easy access to friends who have the app on your contact list, group chatting and Facebook integration. It is available for both iOS and Android devices.
