SUPER BOWL XLVII CBS, FEB. 3

Cynopsis: Sports
01.28.13

Good morning. It’s Monday, January 28, 2012, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

Super Bowl week is officially underway and for this year’s broadcaster, CBS, the game has unlocked opportunities for the network in multiple day parts and across a variety of platforms. CBS Corp. is set to deliver coverage and flavor from the New Orleans via series that range from CBS This Morning and The Talk to Face the Nation and The Late Late Show. With ads reportedly reaching as high as $4 million a spot, the game will kick off on Sunday at 6:30p with Jim Nantz and Phil Simms calling the action. Pre-game coverage begins at 11a.

Sister channel CBS Sports Network seems to be the biggest beneficiary of the programming moves, with over 50 hours of original programming on deck from New Orleans, including The Toyota Super Bowl Today Post Game Show, after the contest is over. The network just announced that Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald, Washington Redskins linebacker London Fletcher and Pro Football Hall of Famer Rod Woodson were now added to the mix where they will serve as contributing analysts during CBS Sports Network’s extensive Super Bowl week programming. Programming is set to include daily episodes of Super Bowl Live Presented by Mercedes-Benz, as well as the likes of NFL Monday QB, Rome and Tim Brando Show.

Cynopsis Sports spoke with Sean McManus, Chairman, CBS Sports and Executive Producer for the network’s coverage of The NFL on CBS and Super Bowl XLVII, about the programming boost, his favorite Super Bowl memory as well as plans for CBS Sports Network.

McManus on the Super Bowl programming strategy: Just three years ago at our last Super Bowl, our coverage basically started at 11a on Sunday morning of game day. This year it starts at 9a New Orleans time on Monday. CBS Sports Network is doing 50 hours of live programming so essentially we’ve gone from 0 to 50 in one Super Bowl. CBS Sports Network did no programming at all from Miami the last time we did the Super Bowl, so that’s obviously a dramatic change for us. Tim Brando and Jim Rome’s shows will be live, Monday QB will be live, so there’s a lot of live programming coming out of there.

What we really tried to do was not make just a CBS Sports Network production, but fully integrate CBS Sports production into the channel so people like Gumbel and James Brown, Jim Nantz, Phil Simms, and all of our big name talent will be involved in the programming on the CBS Sports Network. Plus we are lining up a lot of high profile NFL players, so programming will be relevant and exciting. Its something I am excited about and it can’t help but increase the awareness and the profile of CBS Sports Network.

On the plan for CBS Sports Network: We have a very intelligent and strategic plan to create as much relevant and compelling programming around our live events as we can. We have been looking to upgrade the quality of our live events and to increase distribution, both of which we have successfully done. We are not far off of 50 million homes right now, which is a bit of a threshold for us. We are not spending hundreds of millions of dollars on rights to live events at this time. I think anytime you add someone like Jim Rome or Doug Gottlieb or launch a high-profile show like Monday QB, eventually the viewership will come. The profile will be greater and the distribution will continue to grow and I’m happy with the progress so far.

On teaming Nantz and Simms: Jim was our studio host for NFL Today, and when we decided to pair him with Phil Simms in the booth, the argument I made with Jim was that if you are going to be an absolute top-tier, upper echelon play-by-play man, you’ve got to do the Super Bowl in your career. Phil continues to grow and get better and better each year, and the thought was that the two of them together could really mesh well into a team. Obviously, they not only meshed well, they meshed quickly and have gotten better each and every year.

On his favorite Super Bowl memory: The moment that stands out more than any other is the kickoff of the Super Bowl in 2000, when the Ravens were playing the Giants. It had been an enormous goal for us to bring the NFL back to CBS after it had been lost to FOX four years earlier. It was a very ambitious goal and we worked incredibly hard to bring it back to CBS so there was a huge feeling of satisfaction and accomplishment when we brought the AFC package back. But I think it really came to fruition when the Super Bowl began and it finally dawned on me that we were back in the NFL business, televising the highest-profile and most important event in all of television. That was the culmination of the dream and I remember enjoying the moment for about five seconds and then went back to concentrating on the production and the quality of our coverage.

On the Air

FOX’s sixth installment of UFC bouts on Saturday delivered 3.77 million viewers for the 8-10p broadcast, according to preliminary numbers from Nielsen, with a 1.8 rating in the 18-49 demographic. Although numbers likely to move up as more data becomes available and overrun audiences are factored in, the early score marks a 13% jump over December’s numbers and ranks as the third best in the franchise so far.

Showtime is set to bring back new episodes Jim Rome on Showtime starting Wednesday, March 13 at 9p. The series will tape in front of a live studio audience and air once a month on Wednesday nights throughout the year. The channel will pair episodes of 60 Minutes Sports and Jim Rome in the 9p slot on the first and second Wednesday evening each month.

MLB Network will reveal MLB.com’s annual ranking of the best young talent in baseball via Top 50 Prospects that will air tomorrow at 9p. The list includes the top 100 prospects and is hosted by MLB Network’s Greg Amsinger, with analysis from John Hart and Jonathan Mayo.

MLB Network also brings back Costas at the Movies tonight, with a look at A League of Their Own. Costas will interview director Penny Marshall and actress Geena Davis about the film.

Cartoon Network locked in more athletes and celebrity presenters for its upcoming Hall of Game Awards, including Jessica Alba, Ryan Lochte, Mario Lopez, McKayla Maroney, Victor Cruz and JJ Watt for the third annual installment of the show. The event will premier Monday, Feb. 11 at 7p with hosts Shaquille O’Neal and Nick Cannon. The network also revealed some additional categories, including Amped Up Anthem, Most Viral and Dance Machine.

ESPN’s College GameDay Covered by State Farm will stop in South Bend on Saturday, Feb. 9, where Louisville and Notre Dame will square off at 9p. The series’ first hour begins at 10a on ESPNU before jumping to ESPN at 11a.

SPEED named its Performer of the Year when Mario Andretti presented his namesake trophy to 2012 Formula One champion Sebastian Vettel as this year’s winner the Sunday night edition of SPEED Center.

The LA Galaxy formalized their complete local television broadcast schedule for the 2013 MLS regular season on new home Time Warner Cable SportsNet and Time Warner Cable Deportes with 21 and 17 games on the schedule respectively. Time Warner Cable SportsNet’s debut broadcast will come in the SuperClasico against Chivas USA on Sunday, March 17 while Time Warner Cable Deportes will broadcast its first regular season game six days later on Saturday, March 23 against Colorado.
