Google has long been accused of purposely allowing content farms such as eHow and other spammy third-rate content sites to game its algorithm to appear high up in its search rankings. (Google benefits when such sites are visited via its AdWords program.) The company announced it has modified its system to pull up more “high quality” sites, a change that “noticeably impacts” 11.8% of its queries, according to a blog post.
After Amazon’s purchase of LoveFilm, Google seems eager to step up its movie streaming plans across the pond. Its YouTube subsidiary may actually launch a streaming movie service in Europe, specifically in the UK, before trying one stateside, according to a NYPost report. Google has already put aside $100 million for content deals with major and indie studios to help supply a subscription video on demand product. Yet, some studios would still like the company to do more to strengthen DRM protections to prevent unauthorized content usage.
People magazine became the first celebrity publication to attract 1 million Facebook fans, thanks to a concerted push including contests such as the “Sexiest Man Alive” campaign in Nov. Other recent People digital milestones include 1 billion monthly pageviews on People.com and nearly 4 million Twitter followers across multiple accounts.
Facebook is testing out a new thematically-organized privacy policy, designed to be visual, interactive and easier to understand. The “re-imagined prototype,” developed with advice from regulators, users and privacy experts, according to a blog post on the Facebook Site Governance page, also includes a useful selection of Google Labs-style videos explaining such mysteries as why you see the ads you see. The release comes a day after Facebook responded (agreeably) to an FTC report in Dec. that called for a framework to balance privacy interests with the drive to innovate.
Another day, another privacy snafu for Google. House Energy and Commerce Committee members Joe Barton, (R-Texas), and Edward Markey, (D-Mass) have called for further investigation into information collection practices around Google’s annual Doodle 4 Google kids’ drawing contest after a Huffington Post editorial by documentarian Bob Bowdon ranted that the purpose of the contest was to build a nationwide database of names and addresses of American Children. The contest’s parental consent form (since updated) originally called for each child’s name, address, city of birth as well as the last 4 digits of their social security number.
News Corp. is wading further into the social gaming space with the purchase of San Francisco-based Making Fun, a deal actually engineered last Nov. but not announced until last Friday. Making Fun GM John Welch and CTO Lee Crawford will continue to run the company, which is seeking to recruit developers to create games for social networking platforms and digital devices.
Motorola Mobility filed suit against Tivo in a Texas court on Friday questioning its “time warp” patents and claiming the company’s infringed on several of its patents related to DVRs, per Bloomberg. The complaint contends that Motorola customer Verizon’s set-top boxes do not in fact utilize Tivo patents, which Tivo claimed in a lawsuit leveled at Verizon in 2009.
Europe saw an uptick of 10.9% in social networking penetration last year, according to a ComScore whitepaper – the highest jump seen in any global region in 2010. Facebook was the leading social networking sites in 15 out of 18 markets, (local social networks in the Netherlands, Poland, and Russia continued to retain their majority share in their perspective markets.) Other findings included:
- The Netherlands and the UK led in engagement, with users in both markets spending approximately 25% more time online than the European average of 24.3 hours
- there was significant growth in video viewership to TV sites in Europe, with 16.3 million viewers watching videos on TV sites in Germany in Dec., for instance, up 14% y/y
- Display ads reached 97% of users in the UK, France, and Germany in December 2010, with Social Networking the leading publisher category serving display ads
- Hot selling Android and Apple smartphones helped Smartphone penetration jump to 31% in the UK, France, Germany, Spain, and Italy in 2010
Apple‘s iPhone 4 seems to be experience the same “death grip” problems on the Verizon network as has on AT&T, according to Consumer Reports. Holding the phone in the palm of your hand and covering up the internal antennae with your fingers can cause dropped calls or weak signals.
Following similar apps from Comcast, Verizon, Tivo and Dish, DirecTV is getting ready to launch an iPad app that will act as a programming guide, DVR proxy and advanced remote control. The app will also allow users to customize the home screen to focus on the schedules of their favorite channels and sports teams.
iN DEMAND has promoted Emilio Nunez to SVP/Movies & Original Programming, charged with overseeing programming strategies and deals for the company’s Movies on Demand service. Emilio reports to Michael Berman, EVP/ Programming and General Counsel and is based in the firm’s New York headquarters.
The lead up to the Oscars this year was fueled by a number of social media analytics firms that tried to predict the results by measuring sharing and sentiment on services such as Facebook and Twitter. (For instance, Marketwire’s social media analytics firm Sysomos utilized its platform to analyze the popularity peaks and valleys of the best picture nominees and found that “Inception” dominated conversations but that “The Social Network” edged it out in terms of positive sentiment.) NYMag.com’s Vulture cultural blog is now enlisting Trendrr‘s weird science to rank the most highly anticipated cultural events on the horizon, tracking Twitter and blog activity and re-ordering the list every 24 hours based on the latest activity. Matt Damon/Emily Blunt Hitchcockian yarn “The Adjustment Bureau,” due out March 4, currently tops the movie list.
