Comcast has announced several new commercial agreements it has signed with Verizon Wireless, which will see, among other things, Verizon purchase additional spectrum that is owned by SpectrumCo (a joint venture between Comcast, Time Warner Cable and Bright House Networks). Four years after signing, Comcast will re-sell Verizon Wireless’ service through a Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) agreement, which will enable the cable operator to purchase Verizon service at wholesale rates and then market its own, branded wireless offering bundled together with its existing telecommunications packages. As part of the agreement, Comcast will be able to sell Verizon products across its multiple packages and Verizon will offer Comcast products and services inside their stores. Time Warner Cable and Bright House Networks have also entered into similar MVNO and co-marketing agreements with Verizon. In the announcement, Comcast also noted that both companies will work together on an innovation technology joint venture to develop new offerings that integrate wired and wireless services.


All current and past season episodes of NBC’s Community are now available on Hulu Plus. As part of the new deal, Hulu Plus becomes the exclusive digital syndication partner for Sony and Community. Hulu Plus subscribers will have next-day access to new episodes of the critically-acclaimed comedy series available on multiple platforms including connected TVs, gaming consoles, mobile devices, Blu-ray players and set-top boxes. Users of Hulu’s ad-supported model will continue to have next-day access to the five most recent episodes of the show.

Shaw Media and Rogers Communications have signed a long-term deal that will see distribution of Shaw Media content delivered across all of Rogers’ media platforms. Subscribers will have access to Shaw Media services on TV, Rogers Digital VIP cable package and, as well as on web and mobile devices. Shaw Media’s lineup of TV channels includes HGTV Canada, History Television, Showcase and the second largest conventional TV network in Canada, Global Television.

Users who “like” the Portlandia Facebook page can unlock an exclusive sketch from the upcoming season of Fred Armisen’s comedy series on IFC. For viewers who have not gotten the chance to give the show a look, the first three episodes of the first season are available for free on Hulu. The second season premieres on January 6, 2012 on IFC.


Social TV start-up Miso has raised a $4 million round of funding led by Khosla Ventures, with existing investors Google Ventures and Hearst Interactive Media chipping in as well. You might recall Miso has a company that has launched apps to help users pinpoint what TV show they are watching without needing to perform a social action such as a “check-in.” The company hopes to use the combination of its platform and existing partnerships with operators such as DirecTV and AT&T U-verse to enable content creators to develop social app experiences, reports GigaOm. Since it was founded in 2010, the company has raised a total of $6 million.

Google’s $400 million acquisition of Admeld, a NY-based online display ad start-up, has received approval from the Department of Justice without any conditions. Admeld helps publishers sell ads by negotiating bids from multiple buyers. For now, Google says that Admeld’s products will operate separate from Google’s offerings, but that does not rule out the possibility of both companies working together in the future to optimize a particular service or develop new ones entirely.

Facebook has acquired location-based startup Gowalla for an unspecified sum, according to a report from CNN Money. The report says that most of the Gowalla team will move to Facebook headquarters in Palo Alto in order to work on the upcoming Facebook Timeline feature. Some Gowalla employees will remain in Austin, TX and will work out of Facebook’s local offices in the city. The start-up launched in 2009 as a direct competitor to Foursquare, but was unable to carve out a slice in the location-based app market. The report does not know if Gowalla’s current app, which now focuses more on creating stories via photos based on places users have visited, is on the chopping block or will survive the acquisition.


Canoe Ventures‘ CEO Kathy Timko announced in an interview with Multichannel News and Broadcasting & Cable at their OnScreen Media Summit event that the cable industry’s national advertising platform has been testing VOD ad insertion with one operator in 2011 and will seek to commercialize the service in 2012. Canoe will also further test the service with other MSOs throughout 2012. Timko said that the platform matches up the campaign management elements from networks with the ad insertion capabilities of operators. It will seek to build relationships between content providers and MSOs and will map ads from the networks to the operators. Canoe was formed in 2008 by Comcast, Time Warner Cable, Cox Communications, Charter Communications, Cablevision Systems and Bright House Networks and currently counts AMC, Style and E! Entertainment among its eight network partners.

Vitrue has unveiled a new mobile Facebook application for marketers that allows for the creation of an app on a Tab. Then, when the app is shared through the newsfeed, if a user clicks on that link, he or she will be taken to a new mobile app viewing experience that is optimized to mirror how Tabs and apps on Tabs appear on a browser. Prior to this, Tabs and applications on Tabs were not formatted for mobile viewing. A short video demo on the new mobile technology can be found here . The technology is currently in beta form and will be available for customers on the Vitrue SRM platform by the end of 2012.


Zayo Group is a national fiber-based bandwidth infrastructure and interconnection services provider for wireless carriers, data centers, web content and services companies and many other sectors. Zayo has announced the purchase of 360networks, a smaller bandwidth infrastructure company. It is a deal that will add 18,500 route miles of metro and intercity fiber, which links up 73 markets across the central and western U.S., giving the newly merged company possession of over 44,000 route miles. The acquisition will also give Zayo access to several new markets, including San Diego and San Francisco.


In Trendrr‘s November 2011 Social TV Network Rankings of the Top Five Broadcast Networks, FOX had the highest broadcast social share at 29%, up 5% over October 2011, which also represented the highest increase from October to November among the networks. ABC (25% broadcast social share), CBS (23%), NBC (11%) and CW (7%) posted up behind FOX in that order. Other relevant data from Trendrr’s social charts for November include:

  • MTV was the top social cable network with a share of 12%, followed by BET (11%), USA (9), Nickelodeon and AMC (7% each).
  • FOX’s The X Factor was tops in social broadcast shows as it captured an 11% social share.
  • USA’s WWE Raw was the top social cable show, holding a 7% social share.

According to the latest comScore MobiLens service data, which measures trends in the U.S. mobile phone industry, Google’s Android was the top overall smartphone operating system with a 46.3% market share in the three-month period ending in October 2011; it’s a 4.4% jump from the previous three-month period. Apple’s iOS remained at number two increasing 1% to 28.1%. RIM (17.2%), Microsoft (5.4%) and Symbian (1.6%) rounded out the top five. The report laid out other interesting findings, including data on mobile content usage:

  • Browsers were used by 44.0% of mobile subscribers, a 2.9% increase.
  • Downloaded apps were used by 43.8%, up 3.2%.
  • Visiting social networks or blogs went up 2.2% to 32.3% of mobile users.

Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment is offering a triple-threat of interactive online features for one of this year’s best movies, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, which is slated for release on Blu-ray and DVD on December 13. Apes on Your Street is a new interactive site that plays a quick news clip breaking the news that the “apes are running rampant.” It then prompts you to enter any address to see if the ultra-intelligent apes have taken over that particular area, and then personalizes a video clip of the apes running rampant on that street. Two other features coinciding the release of the film include the ability for fans to create customizable posters on the film’s Facebook fan page that, when shared on Facebook, Twitter or via e-mail, unlocks an exclusive clip from the film; and an interactive trailer that offers viewers exclusive, behind-the-scenes footage and trivia about the scene that they are watching.
