CONTENT EVERYWHERE

DirecTV for iPhone has been updated. Its 3.0 edition has a completely new look and user interface, as well as more customization options available, such as directing the device to send content to a user’s mobile or actual television set.

YouTubers now have an easy way of captioning their videos, called YouTubeCaptions.com. The captions – typed in for a fee – not only help those who can’t hear, but they also boost videos within Google’s search-engine rankings. The cost is a flat $2.50 per minute, though they’re offering a “first 15 minutes free” deal for members of onlinevideo.net.

The founders of the Smosh channel on YouTube, Ian Hecox and Anthony Padilla, now have $259,247 extra to play with, thanks to the contributions of 3,941 funders on Indiegogo. The pair won’t be putting the money toward new online video. Instead, it will go to making Food Battle, the video game, for a variety of platforms. Ten percent of the money will also be split between three different charities.

NEW PROGRAMMING + DEALS

There have been rumors lately about Google exploring a deal with the NFL to stream some of the league’s games. Now word comes from Reuters that DirecTV is asking its subscribers in a survey whether they would support different pricing plans for the NFL Sunday Ticket, and a less expensive Internet-only option. DirecTV – which has had the exclusive rights to the pay package of Sunday NFL games since its debut in 1994 – has said that it might be up for sharing the games with other providers once the current contract ends after the 2014 season.
In Other Words: The NFL is a major piece of guaranteed ratings that will now have more players battling for it as more companies get into streaming content. Adding the NFL legitimizes any company that manages to get a piece of it.

Elise Andrew f****** loves science and she’s been telling the whole world about it for just under two years on her I F****** Love Science Facebook page. Now she has more than 6.5 million followers there and she’ll surely gain more soon because Discovery Digital Networks (via TestTube) and Science Channel have launched a new online video channel based around her and her ILFS page. Andrew will debut a new episode each Friday.

A new web series, Lez Build a Family, aims to demystify parenting for lesbians. Each episode focuses on a different issue, such as insemination, adoption, surrogacy, or legal rights of lesbian couples. Parents from across the globe as well as specialists share information in the series, which has about 10 episodes in production.

MOBILE GAMING + APPS

Motorola’s Moto X phone will be out on all major carriers in the coming weeks. Preceding it is the company’s free Touchless Control and Skip apps for the Moto. The Skip app allows users to skip over having to type in a PIN number to unlock the phone every time it’s used. Instead, Moto X’ers will simply drag the phone across the dongle to unlock the device. Touchless Control works on both Moto X as well as new Droids and allows users to go right to the phone’s voice search interface after saying, “OK, Google Now.” The voice search can now handle questions about the weather and restaurants, among other things.
In Other Words: Siri’s won’t be the only voice out there answering the random questions of the world.

French mobile developer AMA Studios has ported its puzzle game Escape! onto Google Glass, making it one of the first mobile games to be supported by the wearable technology. Now Google Glass wears can help Norm get unstuck.

In-game advertising across platforms will reach $2.8 billion this year estimates PricewaterhouseCoopers, and carmakers are one of the industry’s big spenders, according to Reuters. Volkswagen’s Audi sponsors the upcoming Microsoft Xbox One game Forza Motorsport 5 and Nissan is a partner in Sony’s Playstation game Gran Turismo in the hopes that letting people drive their cars in video games might translate to some sales of actual cars. Games industry analyst Brian Blau of Gartner told the wire service that “auto companies are willing to pay as much as a million dollars if one of their cars is deeply integrated into the storyline of a video game.”
In Other Words: The profile of mobile games is rising so rapidly – that smart advertisers and marketers will more aggressively seek out seek out ways in mobile games to find new customers.

Google sent an email to third-party Android developers Saturday about changes it has made to its Google Play Developer Program Policies that will affect apps and their advertising practices, according to TheNextWeb.com. After 30 days, developers must comply with the new policies or have their apps removed from Google Play. Some of the rules include not allowing advertising to be built into system notifications or home-screen icons, as well as a more comprehensive hate-speech policy and a clarification of its gambling guidelines. It also prohibits incentives from being used to get users to rate an app as well as the artificial inflation of an app’s install count.

Former ABC News Social Media Editor Dan Milano has joined video-sharing site Dailymotion as its Partnership Manager… Brooklyn-based digital creative agency Big Spaceshiphas added Rob Thorsen as its new executive vice president of client services. Thorsen was previously working with Publicis Network’s newly formed MRY.
