Good Morning, it’s Monday, August 13, 2007 and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
Universal Music Group signed a deal to allow digital tracks of its artists to be sold DRM-free on artists’ sites and online retailers’ sites including Amazon.com, Google, Wal-Mart, Best Buy and Real Network’s Rhapsody. The Vivendi-owned company becomes the second major music label to remove digital rights management restrictions, following EMI’s deal with Apple. Songs will be available without copying protections on a trial basis from August 21 to January 31, as Universal wants time to study the impact of DRM-free sales. Conspicuously missing from the partner list Apple’s iTunes store, as the music industry continues to push to level the playing field among online music retailers.
~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~
Google is shuttering its online video rental and retail shop after several user interface experiments and 19 months of operation. Google Video will discontinue rentals and download-to-own sales from August 15 but continue to offer free video content, allowing users to upload clips a la YouTube. To compensate users who will no longer be able to view videos they have already purchased, Google is offering credits for Google Checkout.
Gannett Co. will launch WAP-based local mobile sites in more than 100 markets, delivering freshly updated news, sports and weather information to phones and other mobile devices. Mobile versions of Gannett’s 84 community daily newspapers, 19 local broadcast stations and the USA Today can be accessed:
- directly by entering “m” before a Gannett site’s URL (example: http://m.tennessean.com)
- by using a unique market SMS short code keyword which will be used in print, online and broadcast promotion (example: text NASH to 59523)

History.com launched a new online game as a companion to The History Channel original martial arts series Human Weapon, which debuted July 20 and airs on Fridays at 10:00 pm ET. The game allows users to pick from five forms of martial arts featured in the series – Savate, Muay Thai, US Military Martial Arts, Kung Fu and Karate – and go through six levels of play.
MySpace is inviting users to listen to a live webcast of Yellowcard‘s first “Hey-Play This” concert produced by CenterStaging, beginning tonight at 5 pm PT/8 pm ET. The band will perform tracks from their new album Paper Wall. Users can request songs via email or IM.
~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~
Gloob.TV launched a new video aggregation service, selecting the day’s best videos in multiple categories including sports, movies, music, news games and TV. An editorial staff of 25 sifts through multiple sites to handpick the clips, adding between 20 and 30 new clips each day. Community features include the ability to add comments, pictures and video responses.
Canada-based video aggregator JumpTV acquired London-based Cycling TV for about $4.95 million in cash and stock. Cycling TV owns live broadband rights to most major international cycle races other than the Tour de France, but the site featured 3-minute highlights of Tour de France this year on a video-on-demand basis.
~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~
Hasbro and Electronic Arts formed an alliance to bring classic board games like Monopoly, Scrabble and Yahtzee to digital platforms. With the casual games genre booming, EA is looking to attract players such as women and older demos who have been neglected by game console publishers. EA also operates the casual game website Pogo.com, which charges an annual subscription fee of $39.95 for unlimited play.
Shareholders approved Microsoft‘s $6 billion acquisition of online advertising firm aQuantive.
~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~
The eBay Media Marketplace completed its second scatter advertising deal last week, signing emerging cable network TV One, which joins Oxygen as the first two cable networks to sign up to utilize the online ad exchange. eBay provides a software platform to allow advertisers to negotiate for available TV spots.
Local online advertising company Marchex acquired call-based ad services firm VoiceStar for an estimated $28 million in cash and stock, planning to add VoiceStar’s portfolio of pay-per call services to its local ad services platform. Marchex operates thousands of local generic sites such as newyorkdoctors.com and delivers local ad listings to visitors.
~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC. ~
Nielsen completed the acquisition of San Francisco-based Telephia, Inc., provider of syndicated consumer telecom and mobile market research specializing in tracking ads across multiple devices. Telephia tracks calling, mobile web surfing, video viewing and data usage, basing its research on surveys of individual users.
The new Global Digital Living II survey from Parks Associates gave video downloading services less than flattering marks. Only 16% of those surveyed were pleased with the selection of download-to-own videos while only 21% said they were generally satisfied with videos they have downloaded. Just 13% of video downloaders found the price to be “reasonable.”
High speed internet subscription growth slowed in the second quarter according to quarterly reports with the four largest providers – AT&T, Verizon, Comcast and Time Warner Cable – adding only 1.2 million new subs, a drop of 21% compared to the same period a year ago. The U.S. ranks 25th in the world in broadband adoption with just over 50% connected, according to Point Topic. South Korea leads with a penetration rate of 89%, according to 4th quarter 2006 figures.
~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~
Seattle-based local online ad company Marchex named About.com co-founder and former CEO Bill Day to the post of Chief Media Officer, a newly created position. He will oversee media strategy, online content creation and consumer-related initiatives related to advertising.
~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~
Comcast launched its beta version of the Fancast site, a broadband video portal built around the Fandango.com acquisition showcasing what’s on TV and in the movies. You can check local listings, buy tickets online, view trailers and search for stars or personalities you’re interested in and see their upcoming cable movies, photos and videos clips. The video section is a work in progress, and social networking aspects are very basic. One interesting feature is a preferences screen that asks which genres and types of movies (indie/art house vs. mainstream/Hollywood) you are interested in so as to better target users’ interest. Comcast plans to add full-length TV episodes and movies to the site following the launch of the NBCU/News Corp. joint venture.
