Good morning. It’s Monday, August 12, 2013, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

NEW PROGRAMMING + DEALS

Weather.com debuts a new web series today, Destination Uncharted, which takes viewers to some of the most remote spots on the planet, such as the volcanoes of Iceland and a mysterious island off the coast of Yemen. This series is the second HD video series weather.com is launching as part of The Weather Channel’s largest investment into digital video to date: Weather Films. The six two-to 3.5-minute episodes will all debut today. “Our hope is they catch fire with our audience and inspire people to realize that even with pollution and climate change and a thousand other problems,just how beautiful the Earth still is,” Neil Katz, the editor-in-chief of the site told Cynopsis Digital exclusively. “We’ve seen stunning results, (such as) 100% year over year UV growth on content, 800% PV growth, 900% social shares growth on content pages.” October will mark the start of a Weather Film series on the television channel as well.

Red Bull isn’t just keeping busy sponsoring guys who jump from space and one of Major League Soccer’s top teams. Nope. Red Bull is also putting some of its bucks into a three-part documentary web series, Perspectives, that focuses on action-sports photography. Each episode features an individual involved in Red Bull’s Ilume photography contest: photographer Swkit, BMX rider Sam Lee, and magazine founder and Red Bull Illume judge TK Mak.

Dish and Raycom Media reached agreement to have Raycom content continue to be retransmitted to 36 markets. This ends an eight-day blackout of 53 Raycom stations that lasted eight days. Dish is looking to avoid another blackout at the end of September when its eight-year contract with the Walt Disney Co. and the slew of TV properties it owns comes to an end.
In Other words: There may literally be some dark days ahead. Dish Network chief Charlie Ergen said in an earnings call that the satellite service provider is prepared to drop Disney/ABC and ESPN if they can’t find a deal “that makes sense for our customers… If we don’t get that deal, we’ll part ways  simple as that.” He added, “Disney’s not going to go out of business without the Dish Network and vice versa.”

As of today, GetGlue, the social network for TV, movie, and sports fans, is the newest content source on social curator Mass Relevance‘s platform. This will allow media companies to find, highlight and display GetGlue content from their most passionate fans as real-time, interactive visualizations on web, mobile, and social properties.

MEASUREMENT + METRICS

Research consultancy Latitude has released a new study, The Future of Storytelling, that shows that digital TV will be an integral part of how stories are told in the years to come. According to the study, “audiences are more ready than ever to embrace new tech-driven possibilities for stories to (affect) us more deeply.” The report identifies four different audience archetypes: Seekers, Relaters, Realists, and Players. Some of the stats Latitude dug up are below:

  • 78% want to “friend” a character digitally on Facebook or via text messages and have the ability to help sway the character’s decisions.
  • 87% want to see events through the eyes of a particular character or to switch between different characters’ points-of-view.
  • 41% use a second screen at least daily while watching TV, which includes 50% of 18-34 year-olds and 35% of 34-59 year-olds.
  • 67% say that using a second screen to interact with TV content would increase their overall TV viewing; this includes 63% of 34-59 year-olds.
  • The most popular second screen interactions for TV shows tend to be goal-oriented, such as earning rewards (80% interested), voting to decide a show’s outcome (79%), or making a purchase (76%).
  • 92% agree there’s a real opportunity for brands to make ads feel more like a story or a game that they’d naturally choose to engage with.

In Other Words: The more interactive you can make your series, the more fans will be into it.

Generator Research has released its latest annual report on OTT Internet TV. It notes that by the end of 2013, a total of 158.2 million households around the globe will have viewed some form of OTT internet TV programming on a connected TV set. Of those, 76.6 million households (234 million individuals) will be viewing OTT Internet TV programming on a regular, sustained basis in 2013. By 2017, the ‘sustained usage’ viewership will have increased to 373.1 million households or 1,189 million individuals. The major cable TV networks globally reach about 550 million households.

The ratings for TNT’s exclusive live coverage of the 2013 PGA Championship were up 56% from last year through the second round, but event more impressively, Turner’s PGA.com’s live streaming viewership across platforms is up 93%. Live streaming hours are up 90% compared to the first two days of last year’s event.
In Other Words: Live streaming, especially in the sports world, will become more prevalent, leading to greater revenue.

CONTENT EVERYWHERE

Roku has updated its iOS app and it now allows users to stream videos stored on their devices directly to their TVs. Previously, the device could only stream music and photos stored on the device.
In Other Words: Roku is doing everything it can to make its app a must-have for as many people as possible.

An app from Vevo, the music-video service, is coming for Apple TV this month. So far, Apple hasn’t approved many outside vendors for Apple TV so Vevo will join a select group, which includes HBO Go and ESPN.
In Other Words: Apple knows that it has to include some kind of music for its audience – and in fact its own iTunes radio will debut on Apple devices this fall. But unlike Vevo, it plays only songs, and not video.

MOBILE GAMING + APPS

Whistleblower Edward Snowden has inspired plenty of discussion with his release of documents showcasing some of the ways the American and British government were spying. What Snowden didn’t know is that his exploits also inspired a mobile game: Snowden Saga Escape from Den of Iniquity. On iPhone, iPad, and Android by India-based developer Moong Labs, the game doesn’t exactly stick to Snowden’s actual tale, and has Snowden escaping a jail and needing a gamer’s help to avoid being snagged again by the authorities.

WillCall, a smartphone app that recommends concerts, has received a $1.2 million investment from some music industry bigwigs: Spotify board member and former Facebook president Sean Parker and Dave Matthews band manager Coran Capshaw. WillCall currently only offers up events at smaller clubs in New York and San Francisco.

ADVERTISING

Broadcast Interactive Media (BIM), which creates publishing tools to help attract more traffic and improve ad delivery on Web, video, and mobile platforms, is spinning off a new company, MdotLabs, which is aimed at helping advertisers, demand-side platforms, and publisher networks ID and avoid invalid traffic that is now, according to the company’s first study, costing the online ad ecosystem more than $10 billion every year in wasted ad spending.

EXEC MOVES

Media-buying software company Centro has named Michael Radovancevich to be its new CTO. He was previously a VP at Oracle. He was CTO of Taleo before it was purchased by Oracle for $1.9 billion last year… Greg Goldman has been appointed to be the president of All3Media’s Studio Lambert USA. Goldman most recently worked with Renegade 83 and created and produced NBC’s Ready for Love and CW’s Capture.

Series star Calum Worthy is known for playing the best buddy of Austin in Disney Channel’s Austin & Ally. Now he’s got his own spinoff show that’ll have new episodes coming out every Friday morning. It’ll also be shown on the Disney Channel itself, but not till the following Friday evening.
