Good morning. It’s Monday, April 2, 2012, and this your first early morning briefing.
Nickelodeon’s 25th Annual Kids’ Choice Awards (KCA), hosted this year by Will Smith, aired Saturday, March 31, 2012 live from the Galen Center at USC in LA. The annual scream-fest featured lots of celebrities, musical performances and as always tons of slime. Celebrities getting the green slime treatment included Halle Berry, Justin Bieber, Taylor Lautner and Chris Colfer. Throughout the month of March 2012 kids cast 220+ million votes to select their favorites in 20 categories on the Kids’ Choice Awards website, Nick.com, the Nick mobile website and a KCA app for the iPad, iPhone, and iPod, as well as via an application on the Nickelodeon Facebook page, and on Twitter. For the first time ever, E! broadcast live from the Galen Center during an hour-long Live From the Red Carpet pre-show featuring celebrity arrivals and interviews, some of which also aired on Nickelodeon. The pre-show coverage also included a musical performance by Keke Palmer and Max Schneider (How to Rock) of an original song from Nick’s upcoming original TV movie Rags. The network also featured a range of cross-platform interactive experiences for fans, before, during (including backstage) and after the show on its websites, Twitter, Facebook, and mobile and iOS devices. This year kids also got to help make this the messiest/slimiest show ever, by collecting goo for the Global Slime Collection through a gamefied digital experience in the weeks leading up to the big show. In addition to a number of KCA re-plays on Nickelodeon, Nick at Nite, TeenNick and Nicktoons, this week Nickelodeon will also premiere the half-hour special, KCA: One More Slime!, featuring highlights and exclusive footage from awards show, on Tuesday, April 3, at 6p. Nickelodeon’s 25th Annual Kids’ Choice Awards will be available on Nickelodeon On Demand today, and KCA: One More Slime! will be available from Monday, April 9. Presenting sponsors of Nickelodeon’s 2012 Kids’ Choice Awards are General Mills, Hasbro, Honda and Target. Associate sponsors are Bounty, Nintendo and Skechers. Some of the KCA 2012 winners include:
- TV Show: Victorious

Shaftesbury‘s LA office inks a deal with writer/producer Bruce Kalish (Aaron Stone, The Famous Jett Jackson, Strange Days at Blake Holsey High, Power Rangers) to develop the new tween series Fade In. The half-hour series focuses on 15-year-old aspiring filmmaker Ryan Spencer as he deals with his eccentric family and friends by documenting his life on camera. Through his observational footage of his unconventional family, including a know-it-all younger sister, uptight older brother, eccentric grandmother and parents with unusual professions, and friends, as well as interviews with other teens for an outside perspective, Ryan is on his way to becoming a filmmaker – assuming he can survive adolescence and make sense of his tumultuous life. The series will include interactive elements for fans, such as the opportunity to submit user-generated content. Most recently, Kalish executive produced Mudpit for Cookie Jar Entertainment, which aired on Teletoon Canada.

The agreement sees Nickelodeon acquire Grounded (26×30) for its worldwide channels. Produced by Breakthrough Entertainment, Grounded centers on two teen Greek Goddesses, who after destroying part of the mortal world are kicked out of Mount Olympus and grounded to earth to work in their mortal Uncle Gus’ Pita Palace in a suburban mall. Slated to begin production this summer 2012 in Toronto, the new comedy is executive produced by Paula Hart of Hartbreak Films, with Breakthrough Entertainment’s Ira Levy, Peter Williamson and Joan Lambur. Grounded will roll out on Nickelodeon channels from spring 2013.
Australian-based production company Sticky Pictures and Scotland-based content producer Red Kite Animations, a subsidiary of Singapore’s August Media Holdings, have begun production on the new season of Dennis and Gnasher. Scheduled for delivery in mid 2013, the new season (52×12/26×24), which sees a renewal of the partnership with rights owner DC Thomson, is based on the characters from popular comic The Beano, which celebrates its 75th anniversary in July 2013. Studio 100 Media, a unit of Belgium’s Studio 100, signs a TV license deal with kid-targeted channel KI.KA (Germany) for the preschool animated series Florrie’s Dragons (52×10). The agreement gives KI.KA all exclusive German TV rights for the animated series for five and half years. Aimed specifically at K3-6, Florrie’s Dragons is produced by Wish Films UK, Clockwork Zoo and Studio 100 Animation. Florrie’s Dragons is written by kid’s author An Vrombaut (64 Zoo Lane), and based on the book Dear Dragon published by Hodder Children’s Books. The series revolves around a little princess named Florrie and her best friend, a dragon who can blow bubbles. The series also features their other dragon friends including Toot Toot the Musical Dragon, Splish Splash the Magical Water Dragon, the Dancing Dragonettes and Zoom Zoom the Flying Dragon. Together they explore the world in various adventures during which they discover the meaning of friendship, community, compassion and individuality.

Each adventure features Alice and her friends Brian and Cherry Berry searching for one of the missing monsters, using letter related clues given to them by various characters that they meet along the way.
Vodka Capital inks a strategic European free-to-air broadcast acquisition deal in France with the kid-targeted Gulli network for its preschool series Jelly Jamm. The new deal furthers free-to-air sales for Jelly Jamm, which has already been acquired in Europe by RTVE’s Clan (Spain), Channel 5’s Milkshake (UK), Cartoonito (Italy), RTP 2 (Portugal), as well as in other territories such as Cartoon Network (Turkey), Cartoon Network Arabic (Middle East), Tele-Quebec and TVOKids (both in Canada), and Televisa’s kid-aimed Canal 5 (Mexico).
