Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Monday, April 25, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing. 

ABC Family will host the US premier of the new trailer for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows  Part 2, the final movie based on the Harry Potter books, this Wednesday, April 27 during a showing of the movie Happy Gilmore, 7-9p.  The new trailer features glimpses of the scenes from the movie including Harry, Ron and Hermione escaping from Gringotts bank, the Room of Requirements fire storm, Mrs. Weasley taking on Bellatrix Lestrange, and Harry and Voldemort’s final stand.  Additionally, ABCFamily.com ( www.abcfamily.com ) will feature an exclusive photo from the movie.

Rio tops domestic and worldwide box office.  In its second week out Rio, Fox‘s newest 3D animated feature film which opened April 15, 2011, stays at the top of the charts and the now stands as the biggest grossing release of 2011 after the Easter holiday weekend with a worldwide box office total of $286 million and a domestic take of $81.3 million ($26.8 million this weekend), per THR.  Rio takes over the worldwide top spot for the year from Paramount’s movie Rango, which stands at about $240 million in worldwide receipts.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

More casting news for The Hunger Games movie.  Paula Malcomson (Caprica, Deadwood, Sons of Anarchy) has been tapped to play the widow mother of sisters Katniss and Prim Everdeen, who will be played by Jennifer Lawrence and Willow Shields respectively, in the Lionsgate movie, per Heat Vision.  Directed by Gary Ross from a script by Billy Ray, and produced by Color Force’s Nina Jacobson, The Hunger Games is set for release n March 23, 2012.

MORE KIDS STUFF

CBeebies, the BBC’s preschool channel, joins US Hispanic families in celebrating Children’s Day this week with special programming that promotes learning through play and focusing on health, education, and physical and intellectual development among Hispanic kids in the US.  Children’s Day, April 30, is a Mexican holiday that is also celebrated by Hispanics in the US.  CBeebies will feature special 2-hour episodes of Boogie Beebies, Yo Puedo Cocinar, Roly MO, Dibujemos con Squiglet and ZingZillas, which underline the importance of exercise healthy eating habits, reading, drawing and music, airing one each Monday-Friday April 25-29, 10a-12p, and be repeated from 4p-6p and all day on Children’s Day, April 30.  CBeebies broadcasts in Spanish and is available in the US on Channel 848 as part of Dish Networks’ DishLatino package.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Halfbrick ( www.halfbrick.com ), an Australian-based mobile and console game developer, enters into a new licensing representation partnership and subsequently a new group of deals for its popular Fruit Ninja game, which is available for iPhone, iPad, Android, Windows Phones among others.  Halfbrick has partnered with NYC-based HAP Consulting for licensing representation, which has resulted in a number of Fruit Ninja consumer products licensing partnerships including:

  • Hybrid, a creator and distributor of licensed apparel, Hybrid will release a range of Fruit Ninja products starting with Hot Topic this month, and JC Penney mid May, 2011.
  • Loungefly will expand Fruit Ninja across various personal accessories with the creation of a range of buttons, stickers, key chains, and other products for release in Hot Topic from May 2011.
  • Basic Fun will launch accessories including handheld electronic devices, 3D figural and functional key chains, which will be available at retail for holiday 2011.
  • BioWorld Merchandising is designing headwear, cold weather accessories and bags, as well as small accessory items (e.g. wallets, lanyards, wristbands), set for release for holiday 2011.
  • MJC, a men/women/family sleepwear company, will create Fruit Ninja lounge wear that will be available at a range of retailers this year.

The NPD Group‘s newest KIDS tracker (Kids Industry Data Service) went into the field the week of April 11, 2011, to ask “Besides Easter eggs and chocolate, what’s in your child’s Easter basket this year?”  The results features a compilation of 442 mentions of items for kids 0-14 and here’s how it looks:

  • 48% Toys and Games
  • 24% Books
  • 12% Candy
  • 10% Arts and Crafts
  • 6%   Clothes
  • 5%   Movies

Toys and games were broken down into three categories that featured a large share of its responses: plush (22%); games and puzzles (17%), and dolls (6%).  But, even excluding Easter eggs and chocolate, candy was still nearly an eighth of total mentions, as non-chocolate Easter candies such as Peeps and Jelly Beans were mentioned heavily.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Cartoon Network Studios appoints Sharon Lieblein, CSA, to the newly created position of VP/Casting and Talent Development.  Based at the studio in Burbank, CA, Lieblein will oversee live-action casting for the studio and serve as the conduit between talent and the various divisions within the studio and network.  She will report to Rob Sorcher, Chief Content Officer for Cartoon Network.  Prior to this Lieblein toiled for 12 years with Nickelodeon where she ultimately served as VP/Talent and Casting for live action shows and also oversaw animation casting for two years.  She was previously a freelance and in-house casting director on a range of movie and TV projects, including with Witt Thomas Productions.

The Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association ( www.jpma.org ) elects a new Board of Directors for 2011-12.  Newly elected Chairman, Jason Macari of Summer Infant Products, succeeds now Immediate Past Chair, Brenda Berg of Scandinavian Child.  Kelly Mariotti of Green Frog Art has been elected Vice Chair, with Dave Taylor of Dorel Juvenile Group elected as Treasurer.
