Good morning, it’s Monday, April 25, 2011, and this is your first early morning digital briefing. If you would like to read this or any other Cynopsis edition online, click here.
Privacy concerns kicked off by data collection practices of the iPhone have spread to additional smartphone models. After Apple admitted to “intermittently” collecting and reporting back location data every 12 hours of many iPhone users and nearby Wi-Fi networks, phones running on Google‘s Android platform were found to report back even more often, according to a WSJ report. (A test of one Android phone showed that it recorded location data every few seconds and transmitted it back to Google several times an hour.) Federal prosecutors in New Jersey are investigating disclosure policies while House Energy and Commerce committee member Rep. Ed Markey (D-Mass.) and Sen. Al Franken (D-Minn.) have both queried Apple on the issue, showing particular concern of data collection practices for younger users.
Apple is building a cloud-based music service similar to the one Amazon launched last month. Only unlike Amazon, it is seeking the permission of the major labels to offer the digital locker services, according to a Reuters report. The company has already reached agreements with two of the major 4 labels, Universal Music Group, Warner Music Group, Sony and EMI, per All Things D.
That didn’t take long. Hulu has blocked access to its video streaming services on RIM‘s new PlayBook tablet as the two parties negotiate a distribution deal to bring the $8/mo. Hulu Plus subscription service to the device, reports Business Insider. (Hulu videos embedded on third party sites can still be viewed on the tablet, however.)
Splash News has teamed with streaming technology leader Sasashani to deliver web broadcasters a ‘paparazzi’ style live feed at the Royal Wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton. Ustream, Justin.tv and Livestream are among the first global broadcasters to license the Splash News live feed of the much-ballyhooed event. The Splash feed is being licensed with ad breakaways broadcasters can sell to monetize the proceedings.
Paul Goldman, founder of Ear Goo, Inc. and the design studio Element, LLC, has partnered with former MTV Networks’ Matt Giulvezan to launch The Goo, a new studio out to create content for television, film, web, mobile and emerging media. Action Goo will handle live productions, Eye Goo will oversee editorial and design and Ear Goo will handle music, sound design and mixing. The company has also acquired Brooklyn-based Spek Studios to fold into the start-up for its design expertise.

Independent ad network ValueClick has signed a deal to acquire mobile advertising network Greystripe for $75 million in cash, per TechCrunch. Greystripe, which has raised $18 million across four funding rounds, staffs direct sales people who sell rich mobile ads directly to brand advertisers.
Cross MediaWorks unveiled a new initiative with Broadcast Interactive Media to provide BIM local media clients with a toolbox of native smart phone apps for multiple platforms. Local stations can build apps to feature content channels such as breaking local news, community updates and weather forecasts, monetized through local and national ads delivered via the BIMLocal ad network in combination with Cross MediaWorks’s clients.
The AP announced it has reached a tentative agreement with the News Media Guild over a new contract in a deal that would affect some 1,200 news staffers and technology professionals. The agreement would freeze the group’s current pension plan and place future contributions in a 401k-like employee-controlled account, while establishing job security measures and a trio of 1.5% raises for current employees. The AP says loss of traditional ad revenues among papers and local TV station clients has led the AP to lower its fees for U.S. newspapers and broadcasters by $80 million during the past two years.
Samsung has struck back against Apple with its own multi-patent lawsuit, according to Reuters. The Korean CE giant is alleging that the company has unlawfully copied its designs related to power reduction during data transmission, 3G technology for reducing errors during data transmission and wireless data communication technology. The back-and-forth battle comes as Samsung plans to launch a new version of its Galaxy S smartphone this week in Korea.
Yahoo remained the top web destination in March, according to ComScore‘s Media Metrix survey with nearly 180 million unique visitors. Google, Microsoft and Facebook followed with 176.8 million, 176.4 million and 153 million monthly uniques, respectively. Social gaming giant Zynga was the fastest growing online property during the month, attracting 7.3 million uniques, an increase of an astounding 164% over Feb. 2011 (no explanation given.) USTREAM.TV, which benefited from the projectile vomiting of Charlie Sheen, increased its traffic by 67% for the month. Environmental, Home improvement and Travel sites also sprung into heady gains.

Social developer Social Animal was tapped by 80’s new wave band Devo to create an interactive web video featured on Mashable.com for the song “What We Do,” off the band’s 9th studio album, “ Something for Everybody.” – (it’s first new release in 20 years.) The video, complete with e-commerce apps, reveals the band performing in a circular room divided into eleven worlds, offering users the ability to control where the camera lands.
Media Stream Direct hired Doug Crouther as Director of New Business Development, one of raft of new hires for the direct response media buying agency including Dale Lepkofker, who was recently hired as Controller to oversee the day-to-day financials of the Sherman Oaks, CA-based company.
Celebrating what may be the last big pro football event of the 2011 season, NFL.com is returning with live video coverage of the draft and its Fan Draft Room feature – allowing fans to gather and hash over who their teams select on draft day, beginning Thur., April 28. The interface includes a Twitter integration, Facebook polling and enhanced Fan War Rooms that allow users to monitor activity and share their mood (ranging from “bummed” to “excited”) toward current developments. Additional features include a webseries following the first 24 hours in the pro football lives of two highly-touted draftees and a mock draft conducted by NFL Media staffers. Live mobile streaming of the NFL Draft is also available as an exclusive with Verizon Wireless.
