The feud between the federal government and online gambling sites heated up on Friday as Full Tilt Poker, Poker Stars and Absolute Poker were shut down by the Justice Dept. with their domain names seized by the FBI. The sites’ creators are being accused of illegal gambling, money laundering and bank fraud, per the FT. The sites allegedly disguising billions of dollars in gambling payments as online merchandise purchases of items such as golf balls, jewelry and flowers, reports the WSJ, describing the sting as the largest crackdown on Internet poker in the U.S. to date. Federal authorities also have leveled a $3 billion civil suit and filed restraining orders against 76 bank accounts in 14 countries allegedly associated with the poker companies and others as a part of a separate civil action.

Discovery Communications has struck two-year deals with production groups All3 Media, WTFN and Shine Group as part of a new global initiative to develop major content franchises for its global channels business.

Facebook received some $190 million in investment capital from mutual fund group T.Rowe Price, indicated how interest in technology firms is expanding among traditional investment vehicles, reports the WSJ. T. Rowe also disclosed a $71.8 million investment in social gaming giant Zynga and a $35.4 million investment in subscription-based handyman classified service Angie’s List.

Americans viewed 4.3 billion video ads in March, according to ComScore, with Hulu generating the highest number of video ad impressions at more than 1.2 billion, as well as the highest frequency with an average of 47 ads viewed/user over the month. Tremor Media Video Network ranked second overall (and highest among video ad networks) with 804.3 million ad views, followed by Adap.tv (553 million) and BrightRoll Video Network (398 million).

Google reported a Q1 revenue increase of 27% to $8.58 billion on Thur., but saw its share prices drop as the company missed analysts’ forecasts. Newly returned CEO Larry Page appeared briefly on a conference call with analysts, claiming that his push to resume a start-up culture has led so far to a revamped employee bonus program that rewards workers for Google’s success with social networking products.
 
Advocacy group Consumer Watchdog chastised the search giant for hiding billions of dollars in revenue in “dodgy” overseas tax havens to cut its tax by $3.1 billion in the last three years.

Video and computer game sales fell sharply last month by 16% y/y, according to NPD Group, dropping to $735.4 million compared to March 2010 sales of $875 million. While increases in some digital forms of content distribution offset the declines in new physical retail sales of software, overall sales were still down, according to NPD. The company estimates that spending on apps and downloadable online games accounted for some 23% of all game sales in the U.S. last year. The best selling platform for the month was the new Nintendo 3DS, despite only registering 7 days of retail sales during the March results.

David J. Ford has joined RTLV‘s advertising sales team as Regional VP in the Chicago office. David will be responsible for national sales, content creation and sponsorship opportunities for network, reporting to Gig Barton, who oversees all ad sales activities for the multiplatform network.
 
Social marketing company BzzAgent named Joseph Ayotte to the newly-created position of Creative Director. He will be responsible for driving the Boston-based company’s creative strategy and overseeing the user experience across all digital channels.
 
Trailer Park Interactive tapped Amy Gunzenhauser as Director of Social Media. Amy joins Trailer Park from FEARnet. She will report directly to Michael Faulkner, the division’s VP, Interactive Accounts.

Content curation services continue to be an important special sauce that helps differentiate digital services, especially in the crowded music space. Syntonetic has introduced an interesting upgrade to its $4.99 mood-based Moodagent iPhone app to make recommendations based on both emotional profiling and geographic targeting. (An American, after all, may not want to hear the same tune as a Korean native when he or she is in the mood to celebrate.) The Moodagent interface creates personalized playlists, powered by an indexing agent that categorizes some 1 billion songs to fit users’ tastes when they select:  “sensual,” “tender,” “happy,” “angry” or “tempo.” If a happy New Yorker pulls up a Lady Gaga track to sample, a Korean native would get a similar-sounding K-pop hit, according to Syntonetic. Moodagent has reached over 5 million downloads to date via apps for iPhone, Android and Nokia. The company receives a share of the revenue from purchased tracks and is also working on a “mood based” ad model for the free version of its app.
