EXECUTIVE MOVES:
“Preston Padden resigns from Fox! Padden was head of affiliate relations and with his delighted demeanor and unchecked abounding charm, he successfully alienated most of the affiliate body. … he was heading up the Fox effort to acquire Echostar” and to do that he needed to get the support of the broadcast affiliate body, which he couldn’t get. With him now gone, the negotiations can continue between Echostar and Fox. No worries tho, Padden later named President of ABC Television Network where he will again oversee affiliate relations as well as several other departments.
“Lucy Salhaney quits UPN!”
Jerry Springer gets bounced off WMAQ Chicago news where he was supplying the nightly commentary at the end of the local news. He started on a Monday, when the news had a 14 share; by Wednesday it had dipped to a 9.
Keith Olbermann is jumping from ESPN as a sportscaster to news anchor for MSNBC
Nancy Glass leaves American Journal and will be replaced by the brother/sister Perez act; Maureen O’Boyle returns to co-anchor Extra
Joan Lunden leaves Good Morning America after 20 years … conversations begin with Willow Bay, Elizabeth Vargas, Cynthia McFadden and Connie Chung after learning DreamWorks would not be bringing out the Connie Chung & Maury Povich show. As to Charles Gibson, rumors suggest he may be leaving as well – later Jim Nantz reportedly turned down joining GMA and prefers to re-sign with CBS sports and head to Japan for the Olympics
Charlie Gibson being courted by CNN and a decision is expected before year’s end .. at the same time speculation is he’ll stay (of course this sort of speculation 10 years later is pretty easy to come up with!)
With that said, news came the next day that Jeff Greenfield will make a move from ABC News to CNN
Peter Lund quits CBS … Mel Karmazin who oversees the radio division, will now also oversee the television group
Tony Vinciquerra leaves CBS TV Station Group where he was EVP; Leslie Moonves upped to President of CBS Television; Margaret Loesch named Vice Chairman of Fox Kids Worldwide as of September and resigns in November; Dean Valentine named new head of UPN Network; David Hill named Chairman and CEO of Fox Broadcasting; Scott Sassa will replace John Rohrbeck as Prez of NBC Station Group; Tom Nunan named EVP/Entertainment at UPN; Paxson Comm names Dean Goodman to President of the station Group; Rich Cronin named Pres/CEO of Fox Kids Network and Family Channel; Bud Carey resigns from WCBS, Jonathon Klein to become new GM; Rick Kaplan named President of CNN
