Cynopsis: DIGITAL
04/11/11
Good morning, it’s Monday, April 11 2011, and this is your first early morning digital briefing. If you would like to read this or any other Cynopsis edition online, click here.
The U.S. Justice Dept. has approved Google‘s $700 million acquisition of flight data company ITA Software with several conditions attached. (Critics have complained that the purchase will enable Google to dominate the travel search business, leading to less choice and ultimately higher ticket prices for consumers.) The company has agreed to continue to “reasonably” license ITA services to other travel search sites for at least 5 years and also agreed to let the Justice Dept. look into its practices to ensure that they remain fair and competitive. The settlement marks the first time Google has agreed to such terms in an acquisition, and indicates a more stringent view toward the search giant going forward.
Sunday night’s inaugural Comedy Awards show on Comedy Central utilized digital platforms to full effect. The event, taped The Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City on March 26, was simulcast via iPhone, iPad and Android as well as the ComedyAwards.com website, sponsored by Pizza Hut. The webcast featured pre-show red carpet interviews, parody videos from sketch group BriTANick and tweets and Facebook posts, including plenty of live tweets from on air talent.
NYTimes Co.’s About.com has launched a new Spanish-language channel, About en Espanol, currently featuring nine topics including movies, music, kids, dogs, internet for beginners, personal computers, literature, makeup and spreadsheets with nearly 100 additional topics planned for later this year. About also announced plans to expand its Guide sites by 25% and more than double the number of how-to videos throughout the site’s 24 channels.
CNN Radio has launched a series of original podcasts covering Politics, Entertainment, Technology, and Food available on iTunes and for the Zune.
Video search engine Blinkx has acquired Burlington, MA-based online ad network Burst Media for $30 million in stock. Blinkx intends to drive expansion of its audience by embedding relevant videos and video channels into Burst’s network of publisher sites. Blinkx also plans to create contextually relevant video channels for Burst’s publisher sites to aggregate an online video audience for advertisers.
Solve Media is unveiling a new solution this morning designed to help large media publishers increase revenue across their portfolios by monetizing CAPTCHA advertising inventory deployed through Solve Media’s TYPE-IN platform. Solve Media will also offer in-house creative and design services to ensure ads are optimized for specific campaign objectives.
The Republican-controlled House of Representatives passed a measure on Friday to limit the FCC’s power to regulate how ISPs manage their broadband networks. The House voted 240-179 with only 6 Democrats voting in favor of the resolution. The measure would prevent the Julius Genachowski-led commission from enacting Net Neutrality rules established to prevent ISPs from blocking or slowing internet connections to promote content or services they hold an interest in. (The FCC passed the rules in Dec. 3-2 along party lines.) The measure is expected to have a much harder time passing the Senate and even if did, faces a likely Presidential veto.
Time Warner Cable and Viacom each filed opposing lawsuits last week to seek a ruling on the contentious issue of content and licensing rights pertaining to streaming live TV channels to the TWCableTV iPad app. Viacom appears to be seeking additional payment for use of its channels within the application. Time Warner Cable’s app has achieved some 360k downloads since its launch on March 15.
Comcast’s white label video service thePlatform struck a deal with Microsoft to add the software giant’s PlayReady and its Internet Information Services Smooth Streaming products into thePlatform’s video management system. The first joint deployment of the PlayReady DRM service is for Comcast‘s Xfinity TV Online TV Everywhere service, integrated as part of the On Demand video streaming feature on the MSO’s iPad app.
Content delivery network Contendo is launching a new cloud-based web platform this morning enabling content providers to push business logic for web content applications into the cloud. “Cloudlet” modules can be deployed by publishers to deliver and accelerate personalized applications seamlessly with no overhead of integration to acceleration services, according to Contendo VP/Research & Development Udi Trugman.
Rupert Murdoch’s News International issued a public apology on behalf of News of the World, admitting for the first time that the tabloid was guilty of hacking into the mobile voicemail accounts of an alleged two dozen public figures in the UK. Eight victims have been offered compensation for the invasion of privacy, reports The Guardian, but News International will be forced to hand over internal emails that may uncover a broader trail of misdeeds.
Heading into NAB, the Open Mobile Video Coalition (OMVC) is estimating that mobile DTV signals will be available in about 71 million U.S. American homes within the next 12 months – that’s two-thirds of the viewing public. The Mobile DTV Pavillion, co-hosted by the Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC), the OMVC and the NAB, will showcase the latest devices designed to transmit live mobile broadcasts including the Valups Tivizen receiver that plugs into an iPad and iPhone and a variety of USB receivers for laptops from manufacturers such as DTVinteractive, Hauppauge and Pixtree.
LG is demonstrating a 7-inch 3D mobile digital TV this year, which transmits 3D images broadcast via the ATSC Mobile DTV standard without the need for those pesky glasses.
Women-targeted blog network BlogHer has hired former VP/Sales Development for Glam Media and former VP, Group Publisher for Conde Nast Digital Christine DeMaio to become the company’s new SVP/Sales Marketing. She reports in Belmont, CA to co-founder and CEO Lisa Stone.

YouTube is pushing hard to spread its wings into new areas including concert promotion – the DigiTour is taking YouTube to live venues across 27 North American cities – and premium content production. (The site is hosting a gathering in Hollywood next week to promote the use of its platform to help distribute major releases.) YouTube Live is the video portal’s newest effort to promote live streaming of popular events including sports, concerts, interviews and public appearances of prominent folks. Many of the live events will be one-offs but you’re encouraged to browse the site and subscribe to specific producers, which will notify you of upcoming events on your YouTube start-up page. The site is sparsely populated now, but the company is rolling out a beta platform that will extend live broadcasting capabilities to thousands of producers in the coming months. Services such as Stickam and Ustream have helped producers develop loyal niche followings, but YouTube’s massive reach could bring a much broader audience to live streaming events. (You need only look at Charlie Sheen’s rantings on Ustream, if you must, to see the medium’s potential – over 3 million viewers have to date.)
