Cynopsis: DIGITAL
09.27.13

Good morning. It’s Friday, September 27, 2013, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

NEW PROGRAMMING + DEALS

Streaming service Hopster hits the UK market in November. Aimed at kids between the ages of 2 and 6, the service will be offered on Apple tablets and smartphones and carry only children’s shows and games. Ad-free like Netflix, Hopster will charge between $8 and $10 a month.

Toyota and Discovery have teamed up for another season of web series Fw: Thinking. New episodes of the time travel show will air weekly on the Discovery’s TestTube net well into 2014.

Ford acquired mobile car app developer Livio yesterday. The auto company said it made the deal to promote a single technical standard for in-car apps, and extend its leadership in providing easy access to the electronic content drivers crave. In other words: In-car connectivity is critical to winning over the younger demo – and Ford is willing to pony up for it.

BlackBerry cancelled its investor call originally scheduled for today. In other words: What’s the point? The beleaguered Canadian company is in the midst of a $4.7 billion acquisition by Fairfax Financial Holdings.

CONTENT MEDIA

No touchdown for the NFL Network and the latest deal with Twitter’s Amplify program – the network’s contracts with Fox, NBC, ESPN and CBS prohibit it from publishing highlights from games on any social media until after the game has aired. In other words: The net can tweet analysis about any game after it’s over, but real-time coverage can only run during NFL Network’s own Thursday Night Football match-ups.

A Mercedes spot that features a chicken dancing to Diana Ross’s “Upside Down” has racked up 1.5 million YouTube since it launched three days ago. The commercial is for the car’s Magic Body Control, a suspension system offsetting body movement for a smoother drive.

Networks (both Cable & Broadcast) are faced with eroding ratings and ad dollars shifting from TV to Digital. That’s why Cynopsis is presenting a conference on what networks are doing  and what they need to do more of  to aggressively evolve to compete, and profit in this shifting landscape. Join us as our experts share the latest business and advertising models for success at the Cynopsis Future TV Summit!

APPS + MOBILE GAMING

Video app JumpCam allows users to create videos that other people can contribute to. Lots of people! The Apple app lets up to 29 ten-second clips from friends be added to a single video; users can specify settings to keep videos private or be shared on social media. The app will be available for android devices next month.

ADVERTISING

Fox is testing technology for its Video On Demand service that would keep commercials from outlasting their shelf life. The dynamic ad insertion technology would switch out ads that are no longer relevant (like movie openings), replacing them with spots that are current. In other words: Nets could get ad revenue whenever content is watched, making the current 3-day limit obsolete.

Say cheese! Oregon’s dairy brand Tillamook created an interactive media campaign, A Naturally-Aged Story, that charts the local farmer roots of the brand. The site includes video interviews from farmers and cheese factory workers, and asks consumers to share their Tillamook story via Facebook and Twitter.

TECHNOLOGY

Apple is reimagining the artist-signed copy for a digital age. A patent application describes an app that would help artists make digital signatures on individual copies of work; consumers who purchase a product with a unique digital signature would be given a certificate of authenticity to be stored in a cloud that can be carried from device to device.

Call for Submissions: Cynopsis is producing a Halloween Programming Guide which comes out on October 17 and will be sent to all Cynopsis and Cynopsis Kids subscribers. If your network has a Halloween-themed programming, please send your listings to Cathy Applefeld Olson at [email protected] no later than Friday Oct 4. Please include the following information: type of program (i.e. series, special, documentary, movie or holiday-themed episode), title, dates and times of all airings (please indicate when the show first premieres and when subsequent encores will air). Cathy will send you a confirmation email following each submission (if you don’t receive a confirmation email, please resubmit).

EXEC MOVES

Kevin Murphy has joined Digital Media Training as the new Senior Vice President of Business Development. Most recently, Murphy worked in sales management for Turner Broadcasting and WGN America.

Media company Demand Media has hired Claire Carroll as Head of Marketing for affiliate company United TLD. Caroll was previously Head Social Media and Digital Director for Neo@Ogilvy.

DIGITAL SPOTLIGHT OF THE DAY

The Curve Report is NBCUniversal Integrated Media‘s biannual survey of modern consumer culture, social trends and industry shifts. Executive Vice President and Senior Marketing Officer of NBCU’s Integrated Media John Shea explains the background of The Curve’s research to Cynopsis.

How did the theme of “reconstruction” manifest?
It evolved from a stop-you-in-your-tracks finding: two thirds of the Gen X’s and Y’s we polled said 2000-2010 was the most disruptive decade of the last 100 years. People are drawing new borders around the way they work, play, learn, shop and are entertained. The implication for marketers  and, frankly, all businesses – is that we need new ways to amplify the connection points between brands and consumers.

What is an example of disruption?
Take the advent of apps, for example  87 percent of the respondents say they rely on apps more today than just one year ago; 72 percent have downloaded an app in the past week, and 32 percent in the past day. At this rate, someone who has 25 apps today will have 75-400 in a year – there are a variety of ways brands can connect to consumers through a vehicle that didn’t exist in a widespread way just several years ago.

Read the rest of the Q&A with Shea at www.cynopsis.com and watch a clip from the previous Curve Report on generation Y. The accompanying documentary for this report is expected early next year.
