Netflix warned investors that it expects to lose subscribers in the third quarter, likely due to its new pricing plan. The company projects to finish the third quarter with 24 million U.S. subscribers, one million less than its forecast from mid-quarter, and the first time the company has lost subscribers since 2007. However, the company’s financial guidance remains the same, suggesting the pricing plan is working for Netflix’s bottom line. The projections call for Netflix to finish the quarter with 21.8 million streaming customers, down from a projected 22 million in late July; 14.2 million DVD customers, down from 15 million projected in July. About 12 million customers have both streaming and DVD.

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

Digital viewing for sports can increase overall watching and loyalty, said a new eMarketer study. “Content owners that take a proactive approach in reaching audiences on as many devices and platforms as possible are often rewarded with long-term gains in viewership and loyalty,” eMarketer said, adding that the NFL, MLB, NBA and NHL are generating hundreds of millions in digital revenue. The NFL tops the list at about $500 million in digital revenue from paid content, ads and other revenue streams, with MLB at $450 million, the NBA at $225 million and the NHL at $120 million. Events like the Olympics, World Cup Soccer and college basketball have helped grow audiences and demand for streaming sports.

Scripps Networks Digital launched a new site HGTVRemodels.com that’s designed to guide users through a remodel plan from start to finish. The site is curated includes insight on room layout, best practices, energy efficiency and home technology, Scripps said. The site also features video programming on remodels.

FX introduced a so-called “experiential” Web site for its new series American Horror Story that premieres Oct. 5. The new site, www.youregoingtodieinthere.com, digs into the legend of the house at the heart of the scary series and has been built in partnership with  horror and fan communities on- DreadCentral, FearNet, Fangoria, Geeks of Doom, Camp Blood, Ology and Bloody Disgusting. FX hopes to build buzz for the show launch with the Web site.

~ INNOVATORS & START UPS ~

Social activity company appssavvy shuttered its traditional banner advertising business to focus solely on its new platform called adtivity that delivers display ads based on a user’s social activities. Marketers can buy audiences via adtivity as users share content, check-in, set statuses and perform other social activities. At launch the platform reaches 127 million people performing 1.4 billion social activities each month, appssavvy said.
 
Video advertising technology provider Mixpo rolled out a new platform that lets publishers, agencies and brands create tailored and interactive video ads for any format. The new tools also help target viewers with customized messages, and viewers can also pick the ad they want to watch with the technology.

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

Retail giants Macy’s and Bloomingdale’s are testing a new mobile strategy in 350 stores this fall to use tablets to help customers determine which Clinique makeup product is right for them while in store, according to a report in Mobile Marketer Daily. Macy’s will also use the tablets for jewelry and other beauty products.

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

New corporate owner Comcast said it’s happy with NBC. Speaking at the Bank of America Merrill Lynch media conference investor conference this week, NBCUniversal CEO Steve Burke said the network is “reviving faster than Comcast expected,” according to various reports. He noted that the national ad business is strong, Superbowl ads are nearly sold out, and that NBC expects to snag “hundreds of millions of dollars” in retransmission content fees with cable and satellite providers, an ironic twist given that the network is owned by a cable operators.

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

Online ticketing service EventBrite is offering a handful of free live-music events in Chicago, New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Dallas on Sept. 17 with bands like The Hold Steady and Green River Ordinance as part of a partnership with local charities. Interested music goers can make charitable donations using Eventbrite at the Door app.
 
Adult Swim Digital launched a new slate of five mobile games on the Apple platform, starting with Monsters Ate My Condo. The games are part of a new partnership between the programming and games developer PikPok.
