Good Morning, it’s Friday, September 14, 2007 and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
After being taken to task by bloggers such as Jeff Jarvis for backing off, Yahoo is going ahead with an interesting Mashup feature of its Democratic Candidate Mashup, allowing citizen editors to combine candidate comments with other images and sounds the way they see fit. Yahoo’s web based video editing service Jumpcut will let the footage all hang out, so to speak, enabling mashers to create a new medium for the YouTube generation of satirists. The virtual “debate”, produced in partnership with The Huffington Post and Slate, presents an innovative user interface, allowing visitors to choose which candidates they want to hear from on the issues Yahoo members determined were most relevant. Candidate clips, taken from interviews with Charlie Rose, will be also available on Yahoo’s Election page for embedding on blogs and other sites.
Disney’s runaway success High School Musical 2 is also making its presence felt online, helping Disney.com shatter its own unique user records. The site recorded over 23 million visitors in August, a vast majority of them broadband users, making it the top kids and family site according to comScore Media Metrix.
Comcast/Sony Pictures TV/Lionsgate joint venture will premiere the horror flick Catacombs on VOD on Oct. 1 and on the fearnet.com website on Halloween Night. It is the venture’s first original feature film, co-produced by Lions Gate and Twisted Pictures.
E! Online will simulcast its Red Carpet coverage of the Primetime Emmy Awards on its broadband channel, The Vine @ E! Online, as well as on its Sprint TV mobile channel. The festivities begin this Sunday, Sept. 16 at 4 p.m. ET with pre-show interviews.
ABC will launch a video podcast called “Cavetalk” on Tuesday, September 18, to promote the Cavemen sitcom premiering Oct. 2 at 8 pm ET. Spokescavemen Joel, Nick and Andy have agreed to help clear up some widely held misconceptions about their race. Sign up for it on iTunes or ABC.com.
ESPN360.com kicks off its 61 game season coverage (September – May) of the international UEFA Champions League on September 18, including the quarterfinals, semifinals and the final from Moscow. Each Tuesday and Wednesday match day ESPN360.com will deliver soccer fans three UEFA Champions League matches, one of which will be a simulcast of ESPN2’s coverage. Two each week will be offered in both English and Spanish-language feeds.
Tribune Media Service’s Zap2it.com launched a new “On Broadband” feature powered by Truveo that aggregates all the free full episodes streamed each week by the five major broadcast networks, as well as offerings from TNT and TBS.
Amazon is close to launching its DRM-free downloadable music store, awaiting only approval from the big boss CEO Jeff Bezos, according to Billboard.biz. Amazon has signed supply deals with major labels EMI and Universal Music so far.
Video-sharing site Revver.com, one of the first entertainment sites to offer a revenue-sharing model with creators, announced it has paid out one million dollars since launching a year ago. Let’s hope Revver, like McDonalds, will one day be able to claim “billions and billions” in royalties shared.
Joost signed a partnership agreement with Paramount Pictures to distribute movies such as Patriot Games, Star Trek: Insurrection and Breakfast at Tiffany’s on the P2P video service. The deal includes rights to the UK, France, Germany and Spain with more territories to follow.
Eons, the social network targeting Baby Boomers started by Monster.com founder Jeff Taylor, has fallen on hard times. The company has laid off 24 employees, amounting to about a third of its full-time staff, according to reports, despite attracting nearly 6 million unique visitors since January.
Winamp launched the beta version of a new and improved online multimedia player to celebrate its 10th year in marketplace. Enhancements include album art displays, support of the iPod and other MP3 players and a song recommendation engine that generates custom playlists of songs users may like. Online video search engine blinkx is partnering with UK video advertising network Utarget to try and monetize its video inventory. Utarget TV delivers 15-60 second video ads from major sponsors across more than 125 sites. It delivered more than 9 million video ads last month.
Facebook continued its meteoric rise among social networks according to Nielsen/NetRatings, registering over 19 million unique users in August, an increase of 117% over last year. Top social networking site MySpace also continues to grow at a healthy pace, registering over 60 million users for an annual growth rate of 23%. Meanwhile YouTube nearly doubled its user base from last year, registering nearly four times more traffic than its nearest competitor.

Social networking for Boomers is proving to be a tough sell, so how about the kids demo? Porchlight Entertainment launched KidVideos.com, a safe, secure family friendly video-sharing portal for kids and by kids. Staff editors screen all videos to ensure age appropriateness. The content is organized by genre including action, animation, music video, mystery and “wacky,” (predictably the category with the most views.)
