Cynopsis: DIGITAL

Good morning. It’s Friday, September 13, 2013, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
Twitter says it has filed for an IPO, though it’s keeping the details to themselves, for now. The timing seems to be spot on, as Facebook and LinkedIn stocks hit all-time highs on Wednesday. The social site boasts about 200 million monthly users as of March.
Dell is going private again: A board vote on Thursday approved a $24.9 billion buy-out by co-founder Michael Dell and Silver Lake Partners. When Dell proposed taking the company private in February, he met with opposition from billionaire shareholder Carl Icahn, who argued the company was worth more than $13.65 a share. But profits slid, and Icahn eventually dropped his appeal. Now, as Dell transforms itself into a software and services company, it will have more freedom to make bold moves without having to answer to shareholders.
Verizon may be close to locking down a deal to be the first online pay-TV service, TheConvergence.tv reported on Thursday. The streaming service would push the content Verizon already provides through its cable boxes through the internet, transforming the company into a major virtual operator. There are no dates or confirmation of the deal yet, but the site points out that Verizon has been talking about its existing rights agreements with content owners for a while now. In other words: Verizon is looking to get a leg up on competitors like Comcast and AT&T, and rival companies like Google and Intel that already have this type of service in the works.
The International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences is now accepting entries for the 18th Annual Webby Awards Year’s Best Digital Experiences honors. The awards ceremony celebrates the year’s best digital experiences by highlighting websites, interactive advertising, online film and video, mobile apps and social media from around the world. The Webbys also announced a partnership with New York City Chief Digital Officer Rachel Haot to create new categories featuring social media campaign and applications that improve urban living. Early deadline for nominee entries is Nov. 1; the nominee list will be announced in April 2014, with the ceremony taking place later this spring. Enter at www.entries.webbyawards.com.
Victoria’s Secret released three games within its Pink Nation iphone app, with the goal of engaging the college football fan demographic over the 14-week football season. The ad campaign is similar to past efforts from the retailer. Two games have already been released in the app; the third, which includes a Twitter component, will be available on Sept. 23.
Don’t have time to get outside? There’s an app for that. NatureWindow.TV has launched a free app that airs hour-long HD nature and landscape videos for Google TV. The app features 16 full-length videos of destinations like Patagonia and Hawaii, and can be downloaded in the Google Play store for Google TV.

Quality TV programming could be the key to consumer’s memory of an advertisement and its product, Nielson announced in a new report. The study found that for every two-percentage-point improvement in how well people remembered content from a TV show they watched the day before, advertisers could expect a one-percentage-point improvement in memory of an ad that aired during the program. The study was conducted from 2009 to 2012 with more than 70,000 ads on more than 60,000 episodes. In other words: Advertising on a show viewers love pays off. (The study did acknowledge that ad creativity and quality still trump anything, so bad ads will flop either way.)
Cross-platform media and entertainment analytics firm Mediamorph announced Thursday the additions of new International Sales Director Richard Cooper and Vice President of Marketing Tim Rottach. Cooper previously worked at Red Bee with companies like Discovery Networks, Viacom and Virgin Media. Rottach was Mediamorph’s International Managing Director.
Digital media content platform Martini Media hired Sarah Kate Ellis as its Senior Vice President of Global Marketing. She came from Real Simple, Vogue and InStyle. The company also hired Jason Shugars as Vice President of products; he had been with PubMatic, Google and MP3.com.
Media measurement company Trueffect hired Darryl LaRue as its new Senior Vice President of Operations, Ashley Grace as Senior Vice president of Sales, and Kevin Barhydt as Vice President of Business Development.
Nokia’s new Lumia 1020 Windows smartphone camera was used to shoot the covers for the Men’s Fitness and Shape October issues. Seriously. The project is an advertising stunt for the phone, brought on by Starcom MediaVestGroup‘s deal with the magazines to create a multiplatform campaign allowing readers to compare photos on the cover taken with the phone, versus pics from professional cameras that will be displayed in the mags. Men’s Fitness features Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson; The X Factor judge, musician Kelly Rowland, graces Shape.
Digital Marketing Agency PPC Associates has rebranded itself as 3Q Digital. The change is the result of the company’s shift from its original focus on paid search marketing and pay-per-click management to an agency primarily working on display, Facebook, LinkedIn and Video advertising. The agency works with GoPro, Eventbrite, SurveyMonkey and RentTheRunway.

Google’s Motorola recently opened its first Assembled in the USA smartphone production hub in Fort Worth, Texas. This is a big step for tech manufacturers, because as Forbes reports, the new Moto X factory will add $60 million to the U.S. economy; other big smartphone producers like Apple take their assembly overseas. The new manufacturing plant will add an extra $4 to Motorola’s cost per phone – Motorola will spend $12 to assemble a single phone in the U.S. compared to the $8 it costs Apple to assemble a phone in China’s Foxconn factory. But the boost to the American economy could mean priceless PR. Engadget recently went into the new Moto X factory, and came out with a video that shows how the phones are made. Check out the video at www.Cynopsis.com.
